Just needs to average three a game, which is do-able when you consider we don't have any good defensive teams left on the slate...of course, we could play like "crap" as Bomar said post NWST and not do much...

Bomar is fine...he's done great things for our program and will hold most of the major QB-related records. He will graduate with a SHSU degree and for the most part, has been a vocal team leader on the field and off...

The problem has been the results on the field, which many in the SHSU fan base attribute to the dismal job by the coaching staff

SFA Teleconference Highlights - J.C Harper

* Great atmosphere, great crowd against TXST. We had a hot team, but not hot on Saturday. TXST was and did a tremendous job offensively - praised George, Luke, Rivas and Bush, defensively - TXST was very physical and got after Moses, really shut'em down.

* SHSU - Battle of Piney Woods a great rivalry. Excited to be back on TV. Fun game that if you been involved in rivalries before, this one is right up there with all of them. Only problem is that since 2000, we only one once. SFA has won one time in seven years. I don't know how much of a rivalry it is when you don't win some of them.

* Rhett Bomar continues to be one of the best league, best in the nation in throwing football. We couldn't stop him last year, TW and his staff do a tremendous job getting ready for this ballgame. We have our work cut out for us.

* (on youth being stoked up for rivalry) SHSU is what is what it is, we talk about it as much as we can. I don't know how much of a rivalry it can be when you only win one time in seven years. For us to make it a rivalry, we got to do our job, make it competitive and win some games.

* (on SFA chance for auto and fit into league race) TXST is a superior football team and for conference games to play in fourth quarter, play everyone else but starters, they could've scored 80. I do not know how we can be considered involved in anything until we handle what we need to handle, which is getting our football team better than last week. Got to perform like a champion football team, TXST did. We'll keep working, keep progressing, try to win another ballgame.

SHSU Teleconference - Coach Whitten

(General Statement) I didn't think we excecuted well offensively last week. Too many dropped passes and didn't play well. Tip hat to NW. Definitely, improved a little bit. We gave up some long drives early, thought we settled in and played with consistently later. Same old thing. I probably sound like a broken record. If you are not playing well and doing things right, you'll get beaten, no matter how you play. Very even. A lot of parity. More so than ever. Got to have good preparation.

Big week against our rivalry, the oldest in the state, it makes a special day. It's always a big game, another conference game. I expect we'll have a nice crowd and a great atmopshere.

(Rivalry Approach) Just being an hour and a half, obviously for last 100 years, it's been a big game. All the conference games are big games, any time you have a chance to play in a rivalry game, it's all the more to it. It's just, I'm not sure, I heard P.R say it's the oldest rivalry, second oldest in the state. Lot of history. Always been a huge game and something you want to make sure your well prepared for. Get to the gameday with the right frame of mind and play well.

(Bomar well, other offensive guys inconsistent or what?) Young up front. Two freshman tackles. Some protection problems. We've lost a couple of close games. A year ago, it seemed like we wona ll the close games. We need to be more consistent in all phases. We're getting behind early here lately and not doing a good job of staying in the game. Need to stay more balanced. When we are balanced, we are better and more efficient. Rhett has played well, not been perfect, but he's done a nice job. Like I said, we've gotten out of rhythm a few times and particulary against McNeese we did and they had a good football team. We have to be more consistent. One thing that sticks out at me, is that we've gotten one turnover in last three games. None last week or against McNeese. One in conference play. When you get in a tight game, not getting breaks like that, hard to get over the hump.

I'd personally be fine if SHSU took care of SFA again this year. Regardless of who wins or loses, I'm a big fan of knocking off some Lumberjacks...

Saturday’s Battle of the Piney Woods between Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State will mark the 83rd edition of the state’s second-oldest rivalry between Football Championship Subdivision teams (topped only by the 87 games between Sam Houston State and Texas State). It has, however, been a rivalry in name only in recent years.

The Bearkats have won six of the last seven against the Lumberjacks, including last season’s 45-17 victory. Sam Houston State also has the advantage in experience, as coach Todd Whitten’s team has 14 seniors, compared to just two for SFA.

“I don’t know how much of a rivalry it can be when you win just once in seven tries,” said SFA coach J.C. Harper. “For us to make it a rivalry, we have to be competitive and win some games.”

(Yeah, it's selfish to want a 1 loss team to get another one just so your no loss team has a better chance to win the conference title...but I can't help it.....plus Sam is better than they have played...I would have never guessed they would be in the position they are in now...or that SFA would be where they are now...what a crazy conference! xeekx ) :p

SHSU 24-17 SFA

SFA's kicker missed his second FG of the day. Just not having that great a day when kicking those field goals today...41 yarder this time. Can't capitalize on Kats turnover...

Wilkins misses from about 32 yards out...three missed field goals in this game. Loads of kicking issues on both sides when it comes to putting up 3.

Kats will punt it away. Jacks have 2:51 left from the second the ball is punted to do something...time for the Kats defense to step up once more against the #10 scoring offense in the FCS land.

Remember when Hagler blocked the kick a few years back? I can see SHSU blocking a PAT to win this one...

Trying to run the clock down. I could understand a bit of running...of course, SFA just decided to run and they are making it hurt. They have what -- 70 pass plays? Geez!
