i think the question is, how many first place votes will we lose because of this WIN? the correct answer: several.
what it should be: none.

Congrats JMU but I don't like the college rule. There should be a runoff when you get a penalty in the last few seconds when the clock is running down.
From what the announcers said, they called an illegal formation. Even in the pros, that doesn't get a runoff. Only a false start does.

Villanova did everything right in the second half to win the game. The Wildcats are one team I DO NOT want to play again. Their 3-3 D was stifling at times, but it also gave up a few plays. Ironic that all three TDs for JMU were passes when Landers ran for 133 yards.
The dude scyzsyi (i dunno his name, but its bizarre like that) is one hell of a player and Whitney has a great run downhill mentality, I can see why they benched a really good QB for him.
JMU did a lot offensively when they were rolling, but the three and outs almost reminded me of the Duke game, especially when we couldn't stop Villanova on 3rd & short all day.
Truly an amazing game. Teh freshman linebackers for JMU got schooled big time all day long and need to grow up real fast. DJ Brandon missing will be the Achilles Heel for the rest of the year unless they mature in a hurry. Veney had looked good more or less until this game. It seems DJ Brandon was probably doing some good on the field coaching for the kid.
Anyway, I'll take the win. A true heartbreaker for Villanova. I don't know how many more of these I can take. Wow.

Szczur is really good and apparently a hell of a shortstop too.
The first touchdown was a result of our DB not knowing the situation and biting on Landers running, leaving the WR open in the endzone on 4th and goal from the 24 or something. Just plain stupid. And from what I heard on the radio, the second touchdown was similar.

Ashamed we lost this game. We had 3 guys in the endzone ready to make the INT and instead they tip it to JMU for the win. JMU is a scary team, they are playing like they are invincible right now and that is something you cannot coach. They are a very good team and are one of the best. Only positive is that Nova hung with them today and now knows they can play with the best. After such a tough loss, I hope Nova can string together 4 wins and make the playoffs.

I would not be ashamed. You played good enough to win, but didn't. Frankly, 'Nova outplayed and outcoached JMU today. The beauty of our system is that regardless of how the bounce goes on the hail mary, both teams are probably headed for the playoffs.

Well, armchair coaching is always right. ;)
To get back to your first post about this play...and a reality check...the "WR" wasn't "open in the endzone" when the pass was thrown, nor was the receiver a "WR"...Griff Yancey is a RB who came off the edge on a designed play-action pass. The DBs bit on the play-action, overplaying the threat posed by Landers, and Yancey (a 4.5 guy) ran a straight go-route. The pass was caught in stride and inside the 10 and run in. The one misstep/hesitation by the DBs towards the line of scrimmage on the play-action fake was all that was needed to spring Yancey. It may have seemed like Yancey was in the endzone when he caught the ball because it was a "bang-bang" kind of TD....but that's what happens when a well-designed play is executed by players with outstanding speed.
Bottom line, Nova didn't respect Landers' ability to pass, nor did they respect the speed and receiving threat posed by Yancey. It wasn't a "brain lock" by the DB, rather it was a well executed play. Give credit where credit is due. xthumbsupx

Huh? It was 4th and goal from the 20. What's the DB doing biting on anything in that situation? There's no excuse for the DB to get all worried about jumping a play action with that much cushion. Play design is great and all, but the defense was way, way overreactive in that situation. Same with the second TD - 3 nova guys jump the run and leave a WR wide open 15 yards downfield. At some point, you have to knock the defense for being way too reckless, and both those situations were examples of it.

'Nova is a great team with a great defense. I think they'll go far in the playoffs.
The major problem JMU had today was stopping the run. They didn't give up anything real big, nothing longer than 15 ards, but too many 5-10 yard runs. Nova rushed 54 times for 229, an avg of 4.2 a carry. As has been beat to death, JMU is now inexperienced and undersized at LB, and that was the biggest problem.
As far as being outplayed, don't know about that. I would call it more even. JMU did outgain Nova 353-277. Giving up the 229 to Nova on the ground was bad, but not horrendous. Nova did get 226 rushing as I recall against a darn good run defense in UR. JMU did hold Nova to 48 yards passing. Nova had some horrendous punts trying to punt it away from McGee- 2 that avg 15 yards.
http://www.jmusports.com/fls/14400/stats/football/2008/vu.htm
IMHO Nova should rise in the pollls. I know they won't though because of the BS in the polls. IASU is #2 with a loss to LSU and JMU, then Nova should be top 5 with a loss to WVU and JMU, along with beating then #1 and still top 10 UR. They'll be some idiot voters who drop Nova lower though.

Exactly. I can't believe I agree with a Delaware fan.
Knowing the situation, you can't bite on a play action. Ever. The play by play made it sound like he bit on Landers looking like he was going to take off. Not on the play action fake. I didn't see it, I can only go by the radio announcers.

Good teams find a way to win and that's what JMU did.. but I really don't think there is any significant difference in the comparative strengths of JMU.. Richmond and Villanova. All are very good teams and all are capable of beating anyone in the FCS. The playmaking ability of Rodney Landers does however give JMU an advantage over Richmond and Nova.. along with most everyone else.

Call the the NOVA defenders reckless if you want, but their gameplan was obviously predicated on jamming the line of scrimmage and selling out to stop Landers. After UD gets an overdue beatdown by Rodney this coming Saturday you'll have a better appreciation of his talents.

And I still contend that they didn't understand the situation or something. If you've got 4th and goal from about the 24, you have to know better than to jump on the run until after Landers crosses the line of scrimmage. The only play you have to stop is a long touchdown and because he bit on the run by Landers, he gave up the one thing he couldn't afford. This play is 90% on the defense for being dumb, the other 10% is on Landers for being such a run threat that he got the DB to brain lock.

Dude, 4th and goal, from the 20. Jamming the line of scrimmage in that scenario is just plain dumb. Let Landers get 19 yards and take over the ball. I saw the play, I don't care who the QB is, that's a terrible defensive play. I've seen Landers in more than 10 games over the past 2 years, I'm plenty aware of what he can and can't do. Doesn't change the fact that nova blew that play. 4th and goal from the 20.

One player, who I am not going to single out, blew both coverages on JMU's first two passing touchdowns. He bit on the run and it was over. It was a brain lock. You never know when a kid will blow a coverage. He will play it perfectly in practice all week and make one mistake in a game and it is very costly. These are young kids and they make mistakes, simple as that.

I agree. You've got to sit between the goalline and the 5 until Landers breaks the LOS...by the time he was at the 10, you'd have enough help to contain him.
As I mentioned, we ran this exact same play to hit a long TD on App State. I'm really surprised that 'Nova wasn't looking out for the play, especially there. I had thought about it before, but didn't think it would work.
