View Full Version : Just a couple of thoughts on Wofford

A couple of thoughts occured to me, kind of a good news-bad news type of deal.
1. First, the positive. IF, and believe me, this is a big IF, #4 Wofford can manage to win these next two road games at #3 Elon and #2 Appalachian State, we would have a shot at being ranked #1 in FCS for the first time in school history! I'm not sure if Wofford was ever even ranked #1 as an NAIA school before. But of course it would help if someone would knock off James Madison in the next couple of weeks as well, or the T-Dogs might can only advance as far as #2. I have no idea as to the chances of that happening, as I do not know who JMU will be playing, but hey, anything is possible!
2. On the other side of the coin, in addition to the relentless passing attack and improved running game Elon will challenge my Terriers with, the kicking game is also a huge concern! Althogh it has gotten a little better recently, Wofford is still last (or close to it) in the SoCon in covering kickoffs (yards given up on kickoff returns) which often allows opponents good field position to start drives. We can't afford to give Elon short fields. Also, the placekicking at Wofford is average at best. I'm not sure how Elon's is, but it's probably better than ours. If it is a close game, which is exteremly likely, and it comes down to field goals, which is also very possible, that will not bode well for Wofford. You can't always go for it on every 4th down. Sometimes you've got to be able to make a FG, and the Terriers just can't seem to shore up this very important part of the game and get a reliable PK.

IF Wofford can win their next two games I think they will still be a very close second to JMU. They could jump them if they have impressive point differentials, especially at The Rock.

JMU beat UR and ASU by a hair. Depending on what happens with the Dukes @ Nova and if WC wins this week it'll be interesting.

You cannot tag on a modal verb to another modal verb. This is because modal verb constructions always take an infinitive. Modal verbs have no infinitive form ie, there's no such thing as "to can," "to might," "to would," etc.
Some people in the Southern United States tag modal verbs onto other modal verbs, so "might can" would be acceptable to them. Such usage, of course, is generally frowned upon and marks one as a "hick", "country bumpkin", "redneck", etc.

A word of caution Tom- a newbie coming on the board correcting grammar can find himself labled a prick. I doubt you would want that to happen, but then again, I don't know you.xwhistlex

Very nervous about this Saturday. The weather is likely going to play a huge factor in the game. I'm glad the field drains well!

I totally weep for my part of the country when supposedly educated people don't know proper use of modal verbs. What's next, are we going to be churning out college graduates who don't know how to use a computer to compute partial derivatives over an oblate ellipsoidal manifold?

Well, I'm nervous, too, Tom. I hope we don't fumble the ball a zillion times like we did against you guys last year, and a wet football certainly wouldn't help! The forecast is not the best.

And, exactly who are you newbie? You're right, the intellectual superiority busting out of Burlington these days is amazing. xlolx Don't like the South? I know a large area called the North where you can go and be amongst the intellectual elite like the Bushes from Maine, the Kerrys from Mass and even the supremely intelligent Michael Moore from Michigan. xlolx
Anyways, hopefully you'll start posting about football. It should be one heck of a game at Elon this weekend. I see a tight one and I think it will be won in the trenches (imagine that). I think Wofford has to get pressure on Riddle and disrupt his timing. Elon has a great passing attack. Then Wofford's O-line needs to win the battle to get the running game going to eat up some clock and keep Riddle off the field. That's CD's Key's to the Game. Hopefully ASU will take care of Vermin and we can have a good battle for #1 in the SoCon either for Halloween or in a few weeks. Go APPS!

I disagree. Your ignorance is frightfully disturbing.

It might make you Italian, but it certainly doesn't make you a hick. xwhistlex
