The maroon shade kept getting darker over the years. It started out as a crimson, similar to what Alabama or Harvard wear. By 1991, it was freaking burgandy. That and the stupid-ass softball stripes down the shoulders and sides made it a bad uniform.

I prefer their "Day Game Special" uniform. Frankly, if I owned the Phillies, I'd switch to that unifrorm at home, and tweek the roads slightly. I'd switch to the blue-crowned cap on the road as well and change the white outline on the lettering and numbers of the road grays to a blue outline.

What about the old maroon shirt on white pants day game special?

But how could you not love the old ugly unis? First page of pictures I find on Google... although this is not me, it sure as hell could have been... every single kid and coach looks like my little league team. Even scarier is I was a dead ringer for the doofus in the front row with the tinted glasses... right down to the wrist band. I loved the light blue away uniforms. Gray is stupid.

I remember a couple years ago the Phillies were in Baltimore and before the game, they had an old timers game honoring the 1983 WS. It may have been the 20th anniversay. The O's team wore the old three paneled "duck" hats and the Phils were in light blue. It was awesome. I think my wife was bored to tears though.

There are 4 things wrong with this uniform:
1) Draw-string sash waist instead of a seperate belt.

3) Powder-blue road uniform instead of grey.
4) "Negative" pin stripes on the powder-blue road unis!

In 2008 6 teams had the team name on home and away jerseys including the Rays, Cardinals and Phillies.

2 teams had the city on both home and away, Yankees and Tigers.

The other 22 had the home/team, road/city split.

Historically, no Philadelphia team has ever had the city name on a uniform. There are some photos of pre-1900 Phillies teams with "Phila" on the uniform, but not the full name.

The A's played 54 seasons in Philly, and never had a damn thing on the uniform to indicate what town the played in. But then again, when they adopted the name, "Athletics" was closely tied to Philadelphia anyway. Through the years, they had elephant logos on their uniform and hat and of course, the famous stylized "A." They even wrote out "Athletics" on both the home and road uniform.

The Braves never spelled out "Milwaukee" on their uniforms in their 13 years there.

While it's customary to wear the city name on road uniforms, it's not unusual to not do so either.

This also reminds me of the worst research done for a baseball movie. The next time you stumble across Field of Dreams on cable, take a look at the scenes with all the old-time ball players. Notice the guy in the A's uniform. The letter and piping are kelly green!!! The A's wore various shades of blue, but never green in Philadelphia. Kelly green was Charlie O's dumb idea.

There's a story that one year the Yankees toyed with doing that kind of thing for their road uniform. Navy blue with white pinstripes and white "NY"

:pumpuke:

Here's the excerpt from Wikipedia, quoted from Now Pitching for the Yankees by Marty Appel

In 1974 I walked into (then-General Manager) Gabe Paul's office to find samples of new Yankee road uniforms draped across his sofa. They were the opposite of the home pinstripes — they were navy blue with white pinstripes. The NY logo was in white. Gabe liked them. I nearly fainted. Although the drab gray road uniforms were not exciting, with the plain NEW YORK across the chest, they were just as much the Yankees' look as were the home uniforms. I think my dramatic disdain helped saved (sic) the day and saved the Yankees from wearing those awful pajamas on the field.

Washington got it primarily because there was no other place with a stadium to ready to host major league baseball. The only other metropolitan area with a sufficient stadium was Buffalo (it can be easily expanded), but there are reasons why Buffalo is no longer considered a viable MLB market.

That reminds me of my "alternate baseball history" on how teams should have relocated/expanded over the last 50+ years. I'll repeat it again just to piss off some of you in markets I neglect. :P

- 24 teams, 12 per league, 2 divisions per league. Original split schedule: 90 intradivisional games, 72 interdivisional games.
- No interleague play
- Only division winners make post-season
- No teams in Florida. Sorry, your piss-poor attendance validates that.
- Kansas City A's move to Denver instead of Oakland. Only 1 team in Bay Area: Giants
- No Washington. Expansion Senators go to Dallas/Ft. Worth to begin with instead of waiting 10 years.
- Montreal relocates to Phoenix some 15 years before they actually moved to Washington.
- White Sox move to Milwaukee in late 60's like they talked about at the time.
- Pilots remain in Seattle
- No Angels. Instead, the 1961 AL expansion team is the San Diego Padres. The Angels came about because the AL owners whined about Cali being all NL.
So, here it is:
AL:
New York Yankees; Boston Red Sox; Baltimore Orioles; Detroit Tigers; Cleveland Indians; Milwaukee White Sox; Kansas City Royals; Denver Athletics; Seattle Pilots; San Diego Padres; Texas Rangers; Minnesota Twins

NL:
New York Mets; Philadelphia Phillies; Cincinnati Reds; Chicago Cubs; St. Louis Cardinals; Atlanta Braves; LA Dodgers; SF Giants; Phoenix Firebirds (gotta give it a name); Houston Astros; Toronto Blue Jays; Pittsburgh Pirates

MG, would you enact a hard salary cap? Or would the Pirates and Royals still suck every year?

No, there wouldn't be a need for a hard salary cap. When free agency came about, everyone would have become a free agent. In the reserve-clause era, there were no mulit-year deals. The stars would get the money they deserve, and players would be paid based upon very recent production. Guys like Barry Zito and Adam Eaton wouldn't be sucking things dry. You wouldn't have A-Rod type salaries.

The money the players are paid is one of the major causes for MLB's declining popularity compared to other sports.

Good point. We can tweak it to put KC in the East and Milwaukee in the West. Yeah, not geographically consistent, but what the hell, Cincy and Atlanta were in the NL West for years while St. Louis and Chicago were in the NL East. In fact, looking at your list, I almost want to do that. Years and years of seeing the Phils play the Cubbies and Cards 18 times each got me used to them being in the East.

Also, to make things exciting, there should have been a rule that if you go more than 50 seasons without winning a WS, you are deemed to be a "futile" franchise and are disbanded. ;)
42 more seasons and we can label the Yankees as such xcoolx

I currently wear this one:

It was worn in 1994, and with the intention that it'd be worn for day games. The Phillies did horribly wearing them, and they were dropped during the season. I was given one that year as a 12 year old, and I've been wearing it on and off since. I'll be rocking it tomorrow night along with my Mike Lieberthal jersey!

I've got one of those from 1994. I wear it while mowing the grass. I think the Phils lost every Sunday afternoon game at home that they wore them up until July or or so and dropped them.

As for the unis. I have always liked the white with the red pinstripes. It is the uniform I remember as a kid in the 1950-60's. The current Sunday cream color uni with piping on the sleaves is a throw-back to their 1940's motif sans the 'Blue Jay' logo they had for a couple years. I never liked the maroon unis....probably inherent with my Brown & White mentality!:D
