SoCon Announces Week Eight Football Players of the Week
Edwards, Middleton, Shuman and Andrews Receive Weekly Honors
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for the games played on Saturday, Oct. 18. Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards was named Offensive Player of the Week, Furman defensive back William Middleton was selected Defensive Player of the Week, Elon running back Jamal Shuman was tabbed Freshman of the Week and Georgia Southern punt returner Raja Andrews was voted as the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week were selected by the league’s sports information directors.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Armanti Edwards, Appalachian State, Jr., QB
Edwards earned his third consecutive Offensive Player of the Week award by accounting for 333 total yards and five touchdowns in ASU’s 37-36 win at Georgia Southern. The junior signal caller rushed for 157 yards and three scores while also passing for 176 yards and two touchdowns. The SoCon leader in passing efficiency, Edwards has not thrown an interception in his last 97 pass attempts.
Other Nominees: Jordan Sorrells (Furman), Antonio Henton (Georgia Southern), Andy Strickland (Wofford) and Marquel Pittman (Western Carolina).
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: William Middleton, Furman, Sr., DB
Middleton recorded a program cornerback-record 16 tackles (7 solo, 9 assists), a tackle-for-loss, one sack and a pass deflection in the Paladins’ 34-20 win over 24th-ranked The Citadel. The senior keyed a Furman defense that held the Bulldogs 11 points under their season scoring average.
Other Nominees: Chris Covington (Georgia Southern), Eric Eberhardt (Wofford), Travis Dowda (Appalachian State), Mel Capers (The Citadel), Brandon Wiggins (Elon), Chris Collins (Western Carolina) and Doug Faatiliga (Chattanooga).
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Jamal Shuman, Elon, Fr., RB
Shuman tallied his first career 100-yard game Saturday as Elon topped Chattanooga, 42-7, to extend its longest winning streak in 27 seasons to seven consecutive victories. Shuman rushed 18 times for 166 yards and a touchdown to lead the Phoenix ground attack.
