View Full Version : New Hampshire vs. Northeastern

Okay, 'Cats coming off a toughh loss to William & Mary, while Northeastern comes off of a tough loss as well, losing to UMASS. This will likely be a high scoring affair, expect a lot of points scored on both sides, and may be considered a must-win for the Wildcats.

I'd be pretty surprised if Northeastern didn't put up at least 35 points on UNH, so UNH's offense is going to have to score virtually every possession to get the win. Every defensive stop buys them time, but you can't count on many. It should be close, but I don't trust UNH's defense to come up with any kind of game defining play. The offense will have to carry the effort.

UNH will handle the Huskies running game in the first half, but it is the second half that I am worried about. The defense seems to wear down in half #2. They need to be in better shape knowing that the offense is a quick strike offense. It will be a close game. I think that UNH will pull out the win

Handle the Huskies running game? UMass got ripped by the Huskies run game in the first half.

Northeastern, homecoming, good line, nasty little back....i am thinking they are going to ram it down UNH's throats for a bit...until UNH settles in.

Up here in the North Country we will have our collective fingers crossed hoping UNH can win this time at Northeastern. To say we have not played well there is an understatement, my wife and I ate a very downcast meal in a Boston restaurant 2 years ago after the OT loss, it was UNH's first game without Chicago Bears' Corey Graham who was injured a week earlier. Two years before we won because UNH40 knocked a last second pass down to perserve the win. If we get out of there with a W, no matter the score, this fan will be happy!!

The SE Online speculates that all of Maroney, O'Brien, Wright and Kackert are out Saturday, while the Concord Monitor gives Wright an opportunity to play, which would be a big boost.

If both are out, I'd hope to see a lot more of Kevon Mason and Mike Greene.

Theoretically and statistically, UNH should be able to control NU's running game. They are allowing 2.9 YPC in their first five games of the season, and those numbers are aided by a couple of enormous runs in a few games (Grimes run last week, for example, though I realize those things happen to everyone).

Northeastern has a nice little offense they run. They keep you off balance, then they run it down your throat, then a trick play, run some more, then a big pass. They have some tall receivers, and Orio can throw a nice ball. Sometimes they will line up their running back in the shot gun, he even completed a pass against us. He is a short, stocky kid, about 5'9" 210.

Their defense is ok-good, they made a few big stops against us including a goal line 4 and 1 stop, but we ran at will off tackle on them and 15 yard curls and posts down the middle were open all day for Coen. Northeastern's defense will need to clean that up, or UNH will pass on them all day.

All in all, Northeastern is a solid football team and I would not want to play them again this year. They are deserving of their 25th ranking in the GPI despite their record.
I havn't seen UNH play all year, but this sounds like it should be a close game. On paper, I would have Northeastern at home favored by 3, but I think UNH will be fired up for some pay back for the last couple of years. If UNH can pound out some good yards on the ground and control the clock, they win in a close one.

Good luck to both teams.

I will definately be watching this game on Comcast Sports Net.

Those curls and posts have been open against NU since about 2004 - for some reason our defensive coaching staff must not realize it - despite the fact that everyone in the world knows we practically concede the 7-15 yard curl.

I think you're overestimating our defense, I don't think it's all that good.

Our offense is good enough to trick you to sleep. I think if we stuck with more of the misdirections in the second half, we'd have won the game.

I see a high scoring, high alcohol content game.

That was my conclusion from just one game, you know your defense better than I. I agree if you guys ran the misdirection in the second half more, you probably would have won. Then again, we blew it with the recovered kickoff (not scoring)and our fumble on the one yard line.

UNH is a very explosive team offensively, but I think overall they're finesse team. From the games I've seen they're not very physical and they don't wear you down with size.

That's why I think they've had problem with NU the last few years. NU's defense has been suspect which is why the games have been close.

Despite NU's medicority, the strength of our team had been on the O-Line and they can wear team's down. Ask UMass about our line and I think they'll agree. UMass had no sacks and allowed 233 rush yrds.

In the end I see a close win by NU at home. Obviously, I wouldn't be surprised if UNH won. They're a good team that plays to an excellent offensive system.

I think our D will be fine once we (cough-coaching staff) realize what is we are consistently doing wrong on 3rd and long (tip-it aint rocket science). Once we figure that out, I think we have an above average, young D-that is only getting better. Combine that with our O and special teams (last week aside), we will be a strong team for the forseable future. Question is do we have the nuts to be one of the best in the country?

No. Can't really see any redshirts being burned (def not Howard-not sure who Sweeney is) when we haven't even touched Jellison's potential. And as far as Simpson goes, he always gets you positive yards. Combo of Simpson and Jellison will definitely not prevent you from winning any game. As much as we miss Kackerts speed and explosiveness, I am still very comfortable with these two. Mix in a talented and experienced line and I think our running game will be fine.

I'm done making excuses for this team.....pathetic. The coaching staff needs to pick it up. They lose big games because of coaching. UMASS 2 years ago, UNI last year, W&M last week. Their play calling is terrible. With all the talent they have, there is no excuse to waste as many plays as they do. I challenge someone to tell what kind of offense they run? Do they even come with gameplans? you wouldn't know. Its all over the place. They don't have any rythym, they don't work plays off each other, they don't utlilize their talents. Dumb penalties. no 3rd down defense. Someone said last week on AGS that they have the worst offensive set in history inside the 10. I couldn't agree more. I mean the play call last week on 4th & 1 was gross. Just now, when the Defense hasn't stopped anyone on 3rd down in weeks ....McDonnel on his own 41 with less than a ball length for a first down, losing 14-3, he punts. Just like last year, it took 4 plays for Nu to get back to the 41. They are not close to a playoff team right now. They have shown they can't pick up a yard when they need it.....& they've NOW shown they don't THINK they can pick up a yard when they need it either. I really thought that's what separated this team from others. They make no adjustments either? I was just watching ESPN this morning & they were talking about how Missouri went from a zone D to man a couple weeks ago & turnded things around. Offense the same way. UNH always lets their opponent dictate the strategy instead of themselves. Why did they abandon the rtunning game when Kackert got banged up? I'm sure they'll come back in this game & make it exciting but they need a wake up call...NU one of the worst Ds in CAA.....the whole freakin program needs to raise their standards if were ever going to win anythig - everyone from the fans to the administration to the coaches to the players

Now I don't know much about defensive schemes and packages.. but what was done differently in the second half compared to the last few games? If anything at all? Did they just execute better?

What a turnaround. You can't say enough about a comeback like that on the road.I think they went into the locker room at the half and finally said "enough is enough," came out for the second half and just refused to lose.Terrance Fox had a breakout performance today as well.Last week-great 1st half, this week-great second half;if this team can play up to their capabilities for an entire game, they can play with anyone. The defense played very well when they had to after halftime and hopefully that will serve as a confidence booster.

The frustration level was high at Parsons as well

Great second half.......you shoulda' been there
