:D No homer votes here. The person you would vote for should be the one you think deserves the award. xthumbsupx
If JMU runs the table and Landers has impressive numbers at the end of the year, he could win it unless Higgins keeps this up and leads Weber State to the playoffs.

I voted for WR Ramses Barden because I truely believe he is the most explosive offensive player in the FCS. I know that he will not get it because he is a WR and I think there has only been one WR to win the award. It is more of a battle between QBs and RBs most years. It did not help Ramses that the game with McNeese State was canceled due to Ike and he now will only play a 10 game season.

Wouldn't you have to put Scott on before Randolph. And considering he leads FCS in rushing per game and has 11 TDs, shouldn't he be in the top 8 anyway.

I have seen Bomar play once last year and once this year.
He was awsome vs. us (UCA) this year but did not do much last year.
I have seen Nathan Brown play every game but two since he was a freshman. Probably not the best athlete on this list but is an incredible college football player who does things the right way and helps his team compete and win.

Uh, he's number one in the country in receiving yards/game. By 33 yards. He's averaging 156.5 yards/game, having 626 in four games. As mentioned earlier, Cal Poly had a game canceled against McNeese State due to Hurricane Ike, preventing Barden from playing a highly ranked opponent and a chance to look good while doing it.

Why isn't DERRICK FOURROUX on the list?
He has better numbers than bomar in the following:
passing efficiency
completion %
Less Int's
More Rushing TD's
Bomar edges Fourroux in some catagories, like 1 more Td and more total yds, but if he and brown are there then so should he. Guess we'll see what happens this week.

I almost hate to say it but if I was just being objective and looked at the stats Bomar is the one I'd have to go with. Right now he leads FCS in total offense and is rated 7th in passing efficiency (8th if Nathan Brown is counted). If you compare him to Armanti Edwards, for example, he averages 342 yards total offense per game to Edwards' 247. And Edwards only had a relatively small 4.7 to 4.4 yards per rush edge over him.
I could go through some other stats comparing him to other players but I just think that when you start doing that, if you start off by saying you're just going to look at the stats to pick the top offensive player, he's the one that shakes out.

Guys, I really have to wonder about the objectivity of some of the voters here in noting that Landers from JMU is the leader. He is 52nd in FCS total offense. He's not even rated among the top 100 in passing efficiency. I guess rushing is is strong point but he's 13th there. He's not in the top 10 in anything, as far as I can tell. Having him even in the poll, much less leading in votes, looks a little absurd.
I realize James Madison is having a good year and I'm sure he's integral to that. But c'mon.

He is 52nd in FCS total offense.
A rushing QB is never going to be near the top in total offense. You can't rack up as big of #s rushing the ball as you can passing it 25-40x a game. You have 8 teams avergaing over 300 yards per game passing, and one over 400, but only 2 teams avg over 300 yards per game rushing. Foster last year, won the Payton, was the leading rushing QB in the nation, and he finished 12th in total offense per game.
http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/natlRank.jsp?year=2007&div=5&rpt=IAA_playertotoff&site=org
He's not even rated among the top 100 in passing efficiency.
Come on. Do you think Landers isn't in the Top 100 in passing efficiency because his efficiency #s aren't good enough? Are you that clueless? Landers isn't in the Top 50 passing Efficiency (TSN) or Top 115 (ESPN) because he doesn't have the minimum required 15 passes per game to be rated- he's averaging about 13 passes per game. Look at his completion 62.7% and his TD to INT ratio, 8 to 3. He has a passer efficiency of 157.3, which would put him 11th, which is where Edwards from ASU is, if he had the minimum 15 passes per game.
I guess rushing is is strong point but he's 13th there.
Yes Landers is 13th in rushing. But he's NUMBER ONE among QBs by FAR. Name a QB in the top 10. You can't. name another QB in the top 20. You can't. Name another QB in the top 30. You can't. The next closest QB is Sullivan at Colgate at 35th in rushing.
He's not in the top 10 in anything, as far as I can tell.
QB rushing: #1
Rushing TDs by a QB: #1
Having him even in the poll, much less leading in votes, looks a little absurd.
To say Rodney shouldn't be even mentioned among the finalists is just plain ignorance.

Bomar is only on the list because SHSU's kick game is so horrible that the opposing team usually has 30-35 less yards to work with in any game and Bomar gets to start from the 20! Against UCA Brown started at the 40 while Bomar started at the 20...7 scoring drives x 20 yards = 140 more yards! Plus Brown started on SHSU's 20 twice! xlolx xlolx Yeah, it's a stretch, but looking at it that way, it makes sense...xlolx xlolx xlolx xthumbsupx xlolx

I don't see how our kicking game has anything to do with Bomar's offensive output. You make a very weak case that the starting field position we give up can make the opposing QB's stats look a little light, but its only one game in a season.

I am not going to get into a pissing match on who is the better QB at this point. SHSU has only played 4 games thus far so I still think it is early to tell how the Kats and Bomar will end up.
I am not trying to be a homer here, but for those of you who havent seen Bomar play or Nathan Brown for that matter, you are missing out. I would put these two QB's up against anyone in the country. Forroux is a good QB, Moses appears to be a good QB (havent seen him in person yet), but Brown and Bomar are heads above. Bomar is 110% healthy now. Not many of you know that when Bomar had his knee surgery in the offseason, he actually had a partial tear of anther ligament that had been torn for a while. He made mention that he had been playing with knee pain for a few years, but shrugged it off as tendonitus. Then when he went to repair last years knee injury, they found the other one and fixed it as well. You cant really appreciate his talent unless you were to see him live. SHSU has had some good QB's in the past (McCown & Long), but Bomar is even better. He will be playing on Sunday's.

How Bomar does in the NFL or high he gets picked should have nothing to do with the payton award.. It's not about that and if anyone votes because of what a player MIGHT do in the NFL, he should be kicked off the voting panel!
Fourroux's numbers as i stated are better or just below Bomar in most all passing catagories, not to mention Fourroux being a better runner. I doubt a Mcneese player will ever win these awards because the people who vote really don't see enough of the SLC..
We'll see how they do as the season goes along, but Bomar is always going to get an edge because he came from Oklahoma.

NFL stock should not be the sole reason a player goes on the list, however, it did look good that TSN had DRC on the list last season despite the fact he had no chance at winning the Buchanan Award.
Not sure where people are getting that Fourroux leads Bomar in any passing stats because from the SLC website I found that Bomar leads him in passing average per game, total offense, passing touchdowns, and passing yards. Fourroux has a slight edge in completion percentage, just barely, and one less interception. I have seen both and even without the stats Bomar is the better player at this point. While Bomar is not blowing him away he is beating him out statistically. Bomar has also played in one less game and would probably have him beat by a larger margin if he had played as many games as Fourroux.

NFL stock should not be the sole reason a player goes on the list, however, it did look good that TSN had DRC on the list last season despite the fact he had no chance at winning the Buchanan Award.
Pro-stock means nothing, just look at past winners of the Payton or the Heisman.

Very true but when looking at this level if a player is good enough to go in the top 2 rounds of the draft and is not even considered one of the best at this level, then something is wrong. Bomar is not on the list because of his pro stock, however, when he is drafted high it will look good that he made the list. Bomar just happens to be a better player at this level and better pro prospect than Fourroux. Not saying Fourroux is bad because while I think Bomar is an outstanding FCS player I think Fourroux is solid but just not quite as good as Bomar.

I get my stats from the official NCAA.org stat page.... Fourroux leads in passing efficiency 164.3 to 159.7 if that is any consolation... In addition his comp % is higher, TD % is higher and yds per att is higher.. ALSO, Even though Derrick played in 1 more game he only through 9 passes in game, while Bomar has thrown at least 22 in every game..
