View Full Version : Hypothetical Phillies WS Roster Question

Let's, for arguments sake here, say the Phillies win the NLCS are are in the World Series.
There's no denying that Jamie Moyer stunk in his 2 starts thus far. His performance against Milwaukee was disappointing. His outing against LA was, to me at least, expected. The Dodgers are veteran type of team against whom Moyer matches up poorly. So, my question to you is, should Jamie Moyer be on the Phillies roster for the World Series, should they clinch the pennant?
Granted, he's got a 40.5 ERA so far this post-season. But keep in mind, he does better against younger, more impatient hitters, as his career record versus the Marlins demonstrates.

who is the alternative?

Ryan Madson I suppose. You only need 4 starters for post-season. Is Kendrick or Happ available? I haven't checked.

Moyer went 16-7? with a sub 4 ERA..... I think you gotta go with him, even if he has had two bad playoff starts.... the odds would favor a good start next time rather then another bad one.
BTW he diodnt do too bad against Boston this season, walks was his problem.

I say yes. IF the Phils face the BoSox, I may not start him. But I trust Moyer more than any of the alternatives who would take his roster spot.

Moyer has frequently had rough first innings and then settles down after he gets through it. In LA, he couldn't get the big out when the bags were juiced. I would still keep him on the roster for the WS. In reality, one could think of going on a three-man rotation with the way the bullpen has been. Moyer also brings the 'intangible' leadership and additional coach on the bench for Hamels and Myers.

I think they'll stick with Hamels, Myers, Moyer, and Blanton, with Happ has the potential long man out of the bullpen. Maybe they'd have Blanton pitch Game 3 instead, but Madson will stay in th bullpen. He's settled into the 7th/8th inning role well lately.

he hasnt started this season, you cant count on him to go out there and be effective for more then a couple innings, he would be a waste to have as a starter

You don't know that for certain. Besides, I'm merely tossing names out.

Count me in the "keep Moyer" category.

Keep Moyer - I don't like any of the Phillies starters on short rest and not using him would mean you'd put the rookie JA Happ into the rotation. Now I like Happ and think he'll be a good pitcher, but I don't think throwing him into a World Series like that is really the best thing to do. At least this time when Jamie Moyer pitches it will be in Game 3 at home this time rather than on the road. Might help.

The roster move they need to make is to leave stinkin' So Taguchi off and add Greg Golson for pinch-runner / def replacement in LF duties.

While I agree Taguchi has been anemic at the plate, Golson is even worse. He was horribly overmatched at bat when he was called up. Granted, he does have nice speed, but Taguchi also has more experience, which in World Series play can mean alot as opposed to a rookie getting tossed onto the 'big stage' if the move was needed. To me it's a toss-up on what additional edge you might think you need in series.

I heard that the Phils were considering dropping Taguchi and adding Marson. That way Coste could PH and DH and the Phils would still have a back up catcher.

I'd still like to have golson as only a Pinch-runner and defensive replacement in LF. You might need his speed on the basepaths and I hate seeing Bruntlett in LF. Golson probably wouldn't have to hit, and if he did he couldn't be any worse than Taguchi. Taguchi is a waste of space.
I'd would take Marson over Taguchi too. Then Coste could pinch-hit. That would be fine.
GO PHILS !!!!

Marson was impressive in his brief debut. I was at the CBP that night. Coste can also play 1B should there ever be an injury to Howard, and does give some better PH flexibility. Good thought.
