This season is half over.
Who do you guys think is leading?
I really dont know most of the guys on the watch list and dont really know much about most of the people.
I would say Landers is in the lead but I'm not really sure.

The homerism in me wants to say Landers but with the SoCon just about to hit the meat of its grind out I'm going to reserve judgment. Lots of opportunity for someone to really shine in the SoCon the next 3 weeks.

Rashad Jennings won't win it. He won't have the numbers.
For example, he had 101 on Saturday with two minutes left in the 3rd quarter. He could've easily put up another 50-75 yards, if not more, and a touchdown or two. We decided to sit him and put the reserves in.
With our schedule, it's likely we'll have more games where he doesn't play in the fourth quarter.

Well I'd really love for Weber to play someone from another big conference, because it seems like until that happens, nobody's gonna pay any attention to Cameron Higgins, the nation's leader in passing yardage and touchdowns.

Landers has been bottled up pretty well in a couple of games this year. Plus, Mickey will surely talk most people out of voting for Landers. (I know all you guys are chomping at the bit to hear THOSE quotes).
I think AE is in the lead.

I think he at least deserves to be nominated with his numbers. He has rushed for over 100 yards in every game he has played this year. Not many running backs can say that.

I know this is gonna sound like a low blow but if he would play against a bit more decent competition, maybe his number would a) not be so high either because he would actually be stopped or b) his number actually would be higher and he could win the darn thing.
I don't think Landers will win it, either. And I'm fine with that. He's the best QB for our team, and that's the best thing we can ask for. I think Landers himself would rather have it that way.

DARK HORSE: Ben Widmyer (no homer seriously!)-QB-Wofford
Best passer in Wofford's recent history (paradox?) 4 TDs 0 ints
4 TD runs, 7.6 yards per carry(more than AE and most in conference), 50 yard TD run against USC, 405 rush yards (more than AE and leads Wofford aka #2 rush offense in the FCS)
Just a thought......

If we had a tougher schedule his numbers would be higher because would have to learn on him more. He's a legit NFL prospect back. He was successful as an out of shape freshman in the Big East so it's safe to say he'd be successful in great shape at the FCS level.

Hey man, I know its your time in the spotlight but its not a team award. That said Landers is definetly in the top group but so is Armanti -
Landers
Pass Y:692
Pass TD:8
INTs: 3
Run Y:797
Run TD:8
Armanti
Pass Y:1094
Pass TD:11
INTs:2
Run Y:388
Run TD:4
All that said - that Weber St. guy is beating everyone right now. I wish they would wait till after the playoffs for this award, Armanti Would have had the last 2!

I didn't realize AE's rushing yards were that low. What's the deal? Are they passing more or spreading out the rushes? I knew he was hurt in the second half of the Presby game, but didn't realize he was under 400.
This is also pretty freaky:
Landers
Total Yards: 1489
Total TDs: 16

Edwards
Total Yards: 1482

But, and this is a big but...(get it, big but) AE has had one less game.

Okay, I'll go the homer route and put up Marc Mariani of Montana.
694 yds receiving, 9 TDs, and 21.67 yds/catch, all near the top of the receiving numbers.
Perhaps not in the front-running group, but still a contender, I'd think.
It's nice to have a home run receiver again, that's for sure.

everyone has been focusing more on stopping armanti's run this season and couple that with the welton/radford combo. kind of explains the running yds but our offense is just starting to pick up some momentum, as long as we can cut down on the penalties.

Ever heard of Jamaal Branch or Kenny Gamble? xeyebrowx Both backs went to Colgate and both won the Payton. Gamble won the first award given and Branch in 03 when Colgate made their run.
As far as the mid-season favorites, Higgins seems to be at or near the top. AE and Landers are doing well and should continue to put up big numbers. And how has nobody mentioned Nathan Brown or WIU's Donaldson yet?
EDIT: Saw that Donaldson was mentioned.

He missed the opener and the game vs Georgetown game was cancelled and he still is one of the leading rushers in FCS. He has shown a marked improvement in speed and strength this year and is very durable. He is a winner!

Ae also has thrown for 200+ in one half in each of his last three games. He was 18-20 for 258 and 3 TD's against Samford in one half, which makes it's obvious he wasn't running much.

I'm going with the beast from Cal Poly...Ramses Barden!
Seriously. This guy is a stud.
They've only played 4 games and he has 28 catches for 626 yards and 7 TD's. He's averaging 22 yards a catch. He's a monster. I think he would have a legit shot at getting 1800 receiving yards if Cal Poly wasn't playing a 10 game schedule this year.
I'd say Armanti Edwards and Rodney Landers are tied for second.
Quick Stat - through 6 games last year... J. Foster had over 950 rushing yards.

Where Ramses has improved the most over the last couple of years is when the ball isn't being thrown to him. It wont show up on any stat sheets, but Coach Ellerson has said that he is becoming a devastating blocker on the running play and is helping spring runners like James Noble on big runs. It might not help him with the Payton, but I think that will help him come the draft.

LOL, Nathan was not happy. His first INT of the season was to a D-Lineman on a middle screen in traffic. He should not have thrown it and he knows it.

Watching the replay it looked like the dlineman blew his assignment on the screen receiver (or had it figured out)(had the pass made it to the screen reveiver he would have gone for 40+ yards or more with decent blocking because all the defense was on the right side of the field and the screen was going left) and just happened to be in the right place at the right time..you know that spot between the screen receiver and the QB..it was a straight shot into the D-lineman's hands. It was gonna happen anyway..hard for any qb who throws 178 passes without an INT to not do one sometime. But if his ratio is 178:1...it'll be a great year for the passing game. I bet Nathan was mad about that one..but the final score must have eased the pain a little. xlolx xlolx

He doesn't have history on his side, Brian Finneran is the only receiver to win it, and his team had an undefeated regular season and was ranked #1 the final several weeks of the season.
Villanova doesn't really have anyone who's threatening for the Payton Award.. Aaron Ball could get some votes if he continues breaking off long runs and getting touchdowns, but i think the best chance for a Villanova Player winning a postseason award is Greg Miller with the Buchanan, he's having a monster year.

Although he got off to a relatively slow start, Dom Randolph should be thrown into the discussion. He was the offensive POW this past week, and deservedly so. He had roughly 430 yards passing and threw for 4 touchdowns. On the year he has 17 total touchdowns (14 passing), and is completing on average 32.4 passes a game (the next closest is completing 28.33). He also has the second most passing yards a game at 315 (Matt Nichols from EWU has 318).
The one thing that will kill him is how many interceptions he has thrown, which is 6. If he continues to play as well as he has been playing in the last 2 weeks (82 completions, 7 touchdowns) he will probably be a top 3 or 4 candidate.
