University of Richmond played a great game. You can't deny that. Definitely a top FCS team. They had the right gameplan against us. No turnovers. Ward was very hard to stop. I def underestimated his play. He's not flashy but he gets it done.
JMU D needs work, esp on the deep threat. If it weren't for those deep passes, it may have been a different game.

Wow.

Ward has really grown into a very fine football player. He just flat out beat JMU today on our all-out blitz packages. Every long pass they completed was against our blitzes. Vaughn and Grayson also had outstanding games today for the Spiders...if Vaughn had any speed or moves he'd be the second coming of Hightower. Kudos to UR for a tough, near perfect game. They just made one fatal mistake...they kicked to Scotty McGee. xsmiley_wix

Umm its both. JMU made the plays to pull it off, and Richmond blew their chances. Winning teams find ways to win, thats what App has been doing the past three years, and what JMU is doing this year. They are the clear #1 to this point and the team to beat in my mind.xthumbsupx

I was at the game - phenomenal win for the Dukes. It was looking bad but they got the TD with :59 left and then managed to get the 2-pt conversion to tie. I completely agree with sentiment about Eric Ward. He really has blossomed into a great player.

I was confident coming into this game, but that confidence was taken from me time and time again on 3rd down. Ward was cool, calm and collected and played a great game. He seemed to make all the plays he needed to.

Fortunate for JMU fans our individual talent had a chance to pull out a win in the end.

Fortunate ... but #1 for a reason. I don't see how anyone doesn't vote JMU as #1. UMass(#3), App State(#1) and now Richmond(#5).

Ward was calm cool collective all day because the O line. They where UR player of the game. The conrolled the line all day. Accept for the 1 huge sack at the end. Ward has blossomed into a good QB. Congrats to JMU on a great game. It went about as expected, but it's too bad our defense went into "prevent" mode at the end of the game. We contained Landers as I thought we would, but your other RBs did a nice job. Ward was his usual efficient, productive self for us, nothing new. He plays the same great game every week.

If we played this game 10 times, I could see it coming down to the last play 7 or 8 times. If we take care of business next week at UMass, there may be a rematch somewhere down the line in December.

I will probably get laughed off here for this...

But, at this point I think Scotty McGee should win the Payton. A lot can change... and I would really think coaches would stop kicking to him... but, the guy is unreal.

Am I crazy to think that incredible special team play should get consideration for the award?

2 punt returns for touchdowns, 1 kickoff return for touchdown (xbawlingx). 2 of those were incredibly key plays in huge games.

677 all purpose yards on the season. 96.7 average per game.

If he keeps this up (and teams keep kicking to him xconfusedx ) I think he should get consideration.

What a game. Well played by both teams, no turnovers and very little officiating controversy. Best football environment at UR probably ever.

Tim Silver getting back-to-back personal fouls? What is he thinking.....the guy ripped his helmet off three times during the game but retaliation is always what gets called. UR takes a 4-point lead and is forced to kick off from their 15-yd line. Those 3 gimme points to JMU were critical.

I think Mike London is going to be a great coach, but Mickey out-coached him down the stretch. Several questionable decisions, which I will question here xsmiley_wix ...

1) The gamble that wasn't. We were saying after Richmond scored with 3 minutes left that London should go for 2. I know it's risky, but your best case scenario is a 9-pt lead which is probably insurmountable. Your worst case is a 7-pt lead, and JMU comes back and ties it (yeah Mickey might go for the win). An 8-point lead isn't much better than a 7-pt lead. A 9-pt lead is MUCH better than a 7-pt lead. Plus UR is very good at 2-pters.

2) Prevent defense against JMU? You have to stick with your matchup D that has been effective all day.

3) You just can't punt it to that guy at the end of the game. No way.

There are some very unorthodox things he could have attempted too......I know I'll get laughed at for these, but when you are playing the #1 team you have to think outside the box.

4) When UR had to kick off from the 15, if you're just going to squib it and give JMU the ball at the 40, why not just onside kick? The onside kicks that work are the ones where the other team never expects it. An onside from your own 15?....crazy enough to work.

5) The TV play-by-play guy alluded to this. After Richmond completed the 4th and 5 down to JMU's 3 yard line, they should have run some clock. JMU kind of gave the "ole" defense and let Vaughan score easily. Take a knee at the one and make JMU burn timeouts. I guess if it's a disaster and JMU makes a goal-line stand, you have a one point lead and JMU has the ball on their own 1-yard line with ONE minute to go. It took them over 2 minutes to drive from their 40.

Yeah that one really surprised me. That was probably just a rookie mistake.

Look, there may have been some questionable on-field decisions and you learn from those mistakes. BUT, the Spiders did their homework off the field and came prepared with an outstanding plan and really kept Landers in check.

I know I'm eating some crow this morning. I had really underestimated UR. Even if they should lose again, it would be an absolute disaster to keep Richmond from the playoffs behind teams with better records.

MacThor
October 12th, 2008, 10:47 AM
Clock management is so critical in a game like this. Making Mickey burn just one more time out, or Richmond NOT calling (a needless) timeout on 3rd and 9 at the end, and the punt never happens.

My thoughts- near the end of the 1st qtr, I saw this game looking like the UR/UD one last year. I didn't know it would transform into the Towson one in the last couple of minutes.

I started thinking about clock mgmt when Jmu scored with 15:42 left 20-17. I projected 3 5 min drives which if everything went right would give us the 31-27 win. Then the dead ball foul on our TD at 10:49 left changed that. It took 2 mins off the next Jmu drive.

Had to reassess again when we got the ball up 1 with 6:41 left. I wondered how we could run out the clock and still be sure we scored. I think we combined panic (score at any opportunity) with confidence (in our defense).

Oh, I'm sure no part of the last play was intentional on our part. We seem to have had more ill placed punts this year than last but most have actually worked in our favor (not this time).

Last point, I want to congratulate the Jmu fans and commend them for not glossing over the rest of the game, which it would be easy to do.

JMU had 2 timeouts with 3 min left on the clock. They had plenty of time to do whatever they wanted. As far as containing Landers. I wouldnot call it that because they went away from him. I did like that Tim Tebo jump pass.

As far as trying to use clock up when we had first and goal from the 3...you just can't do that. What play do you call? A run that only gains two yards? You can't assume you will get in the endzone, so you have to score when you can and trust your defense. It would have been different, maybe, if we had the ball at the 20.

As for the punt, it has been well documented that London did not want it kicked to McGee. He was quoted afterward saying as much, and had intentionally avoided kicking to him all day. Why would he suddenly decide to kick right at him with the game on the line? Our punter no doubt tried to kick away from him, but it didn't work out. We'll move on.

Actually I think we're using some of the magic that we appeared to not have the last two playoff games (@ASU, @YSU). Then again, a lot of 2004 games had some magic in them as well.

yeh 14-13 against lehigh and furman

then that huge game against william and mary.

Then Montana

Yeh i would say those games left us a little empty on magic

Richmond has nothing to be ashamed about, that game was a slugfest.

Eric Ward is going to be scary next year, guy has it all - speed, accuracy, strong arm.

Ouch! That was the worst loss I've ever experienced as a fan. Great game by both teams and a great crowd at UR stadium yesterday. I'm still in shock by that ending.

We need to win next week to stay in the playoff hunt.

I agree that it's near impossible to "try not to score" but there were 15 seconds left on the play clock when we snapped for that last TD. I had turned to my friend and said "Mickey's going to let them score here" and he did. We could have at least tried not to score so quickly. And it's near unanimous among my friends that watched the game (including my brother, a rabid JMU fan) that if you're going to score that quickly, you might as well go for 2. The difference between a 9-point lead and a 7-point lead is just too great to pass up.

Yes, the punt was a lack of execution not a coaching miscue. Everyone was so concerned about the block (and JMU didn't come hard) that they didn't cover well.

The most frustrating thing on the re-watch was Landers fumbling on both fourth qtr scoring drives, and JMU recovered.

I agree, especially with a 12-game schedule this year. An 8-4 record looks better than 7-4, especially if your losses are 3 playoff teams and an FBS team. But how confident can you be heading to the playoffs if the only playoff-caliber team you beat is Elon?

alexale23
October 13th, 2008, 12:04 PM
it does not matter who you beat or lose too if you make it in. Its a whole new season. Maybe in the playoffs you get a bounce that goes your way that didnt in the JMU game or the nova game. Maybe u get one of those fumbles. See it doesnot matter what happened in the regular season as long as u make it to post season you got a shot.

It's hard work defeating each and every top 5 team you face.

That is exactly why it is so hard to play in the CAA.

We beat each other up weekly. Unlike other conferences.

I believe we can still have 4-5 teams if the selection committee does their job.

easily 4 we get four every year. Probably 5
all will be in

JMU
NOVA
UMASS
RICHMOND
UNH

even if richmond loses to UMASS. But they will have to win the rest after that

I don't believe a 4 loss team will get in before a 3 loss team from (CAA, SoCon, MVC, maybe BSC or SL). The 1st 3 4 loss teams (if they have 4 losses) would be ASU, UD & Montana. Then JMU (which won't have 4 losses) then maybe us. So to get in with 4 we would need other teams to have 4 instead of 3, might happen but I don't want to depend on it.

A win at UMass would give us in the next 3 weeks:
Georgetown
Bye
@ hofstra (who we can hope is still playing like they did in Harrisonburg)

and close out with UD (can hope no QB improvement)
and @W&M (if we both win this week, that could be for a playoff spot)

Wait. Hofstra played in Harrisonburg? I didn't notice.:D Sorry Hofstra fan.

It depends on whether the committee looks at the wins or the losses. If I were UR, I'd couch myself as an 8-win team rather than a 4-loss team.

If UR loses to UMass or W&M (but beats the other) they're in, IMO. If they win those two but lose to GU or Hofstra, they are probably on the outside looking in.

HIGHLY unlikely 5 in this year, esp if Liberty gets in. Only 3 for the CAA is more likely than 5. Good chance someone gets left out at 8-4.
Of 8 At large:
CAA: likely 3
So-Con: likely 2
MVC: likely 1
Big Sky: likely 1
Great West: likely 1 (Cal Poly)
Big South: maybe 1 (Liberty)
Southland: maybe 1
OVC: likely 0
Patriot: likely 0
MEAC: definitely 0

That right there is 8 likely, with 2 maybes. Since there can only be 8, I could easily see there only being 2 At Large from the CAA, for a total of 3 teams in.

Seriously?? Are these even worth mentioning as possibilities? If we lose to Georgetown, we should immediately disband the program and tear down the stadium.

JMU came in missing:
Bosco Williams (starting WR). Anyone know his ststus for Nova?
-Gerrin Griffin, starting safety, recovering from eye infection, will be back for Nova.
But this is the BAD News:
"Matthews also said Monday, that the Dukes probably won't have senior linebacker D.J. Brandon when they travel to Villanova in two Saturdays.

The coach revealed that Brandon is probably done for the year after a knee injury, suffered in the first quarter on Saturday. Matthews didn't know the extent of the injury on Monday, but said he suspected it was a torn ligament.

Redshirt freshman Colin Fitz-Maurice took over for Brandon, but he suffered a shoulder injury a few plays later. Matthews said Monday that the team would spend its off week trying to determine a replacement."
