British Open to allow women in 2006
April 26, 2005
ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) -- The British Open will allow women to compete starting in 2006, and might even accept Michelle Wie this summer if she qualifies.
The Royal & Ancient Club said Tuesday it has agreed to alter the wording of entry regulations -- a change that could put a woman in one of golf's four majors for the first time.
R&A chief executive Peter Dawson said the men-only restriction will be removed in time for next year's Open at Royal Hoylake, although the qualifying procedure for women has not been determined.
The entry form for this year's championship states: ``An entry will be accepted from any male professional golfer or from a male amateur golfer whose playing handicap does not exceed scratch.''
The three majors in the United States -- the Masters, U.S. Open and PGA -- have no policy barring women.

There is definitely something sexy about a woman who knows how to play with a shaft and balls... :D

Looks like the death of the LPGA, but I'm all for letting anyone who can walk the 18 holes and hit from the same tee boxes into the same holes. Who cares if they're female. I can't hit for $*^*, but apparently, I'm currently just as qualified as they are, and they're pros.

I agree with the idea that if they can qualify just as the men do and make the cut, they should be allowed to play.
I also like a woman who knows how to make a good stroke.

How's that? You really think that women will compete? Annika is so far and above all the other women on the LPGA tour and she couldn't make a cut at a course that she hand picked where she thought she'd stand a chance. Her stats blow away Tigers. She won SEVEN of 17 events last year and was in the top 10 FIFTEEN of 17 with two tied for 13ths as her worst starts. People liked to point to the fact that she beat 11 men at the Colonial. How about the fact that there are about 500,000 golfers that could have shot 5 over for two rounds. The week after the Colonial, Annika shot an opening round 62 and blew away the field at her next LPGA event. The week after that she defender her LPGA Championship title. The week after that she finished tied for first and lost in a playoff. If she can't make it at a PGA Tour event, no woman today can. If Wie plays in the British look for her to miss the cut by at least 10 shots.

I agree with 89Hen. Annika is the best by far on the LPGA and she would be upper-middle of the road as far as the men go and that is not a slam at all. Forget Wie. I am sick of her and her dad's ego's. Let her dominate the LPGA like Annika first and then they can take a shot at the men but until then get to the LPGA first, that is why it was created. I think the only women that should be allowed on the mens tour should be the major champions who have earned a shot. The sponsors will rule and Wie will bring PR and people to their events so what they say goes.
P.S. --> CM's picture is getting me excited!!

I agree with the others, if they can qualify on Merit i am all for it- but I don't want to see her there as a publicity stunt when they know she won't be competitive

I'm just saying that as women become competitive in the PGA, the LPGA will become just another Nike Tour. Also note that Annika's event choice was pushed by Wie having already qualified for an event that came within weeks following her pathetic performance. It was simply a case of Annika wanting to steal the lime light from Wie and it worked.

You've already lost your arguement IMO. Women will NOT become competitive on the PGA Tour. If Annika couldn't do it, no woman will. Yes it was only one tournament, but it was a course geared to Annika and she was playing phenominally before and after it on the LPGA. Call me sexist, but it's the truth.

89Hen,
I agree. Body makeup will not allow most women to hit it long enough to be competitive with the men (not including the old East German womens swim and track teams) ;) . Look at the pin placements on the LPGA and the PGA. Sunday pins for the men are difficult to get at and they need to spin the ball to get it near the hole. LPGA pins are more centered so that you can hit at them with 5 and 6 irons where the men are using 8 irons and under for most holes.
