A couple of interesting matchups. I think going to W&M is going to be tough for 'Nova, and I think they'll be fired up with a chance to get to 3-1 and break into the polls.

UMass can't stop anyone right now, and I think UD can control that game. It'll be close in UMass, but I like UD to win it.

In all fairness, only the UD/UMass and possibly the JMU/Hofstra game should be in doubt. URI will need to play well to beat Brown, but you figure most of us CAA homers will pick them. xsmiley_wix

Northeastern at Towson - Northeastern got the Parson's advantage last week, but won't travel well.
Villanova at William & Mary - 'Nova is clearly better than their supposed 4th in the CAA South
Brown at Rhode Island - URI is a tough place to play, and it might as well be a home game for both teams. All 4,000 RI residents should come out for this one.
Richmond at VMI - Richmond gets redemption
Hofstra at JMU - Hofstra is a wild card in every game...Except a game in Harrisonburg
Delaware at UMass - Two teams who need to figure things out. Thankfully, UMass is at home and wins this one comfortably, but not easily.

Northeastern at Towson - pretty much a toss-up, so I'll take the home team.
Villanova at William & Mary - Bill & Mary are much better than people think, with a solid senior at QB - gotta like them at home.
Brown at Rhode Island - the Ivies look really weak this year.
Richmond at VMI - VMI tougher than usual, as they did play Ohio close for 3 quarters last week, but Richmond's out for blood.
Hofstra at JMU - Maybe close in Hempstead, but not in Harrisonburg.
Delaware at UMass - If UD can run the ball it'll be a long afternoon of catch-up for UMass.

Northeastern by a TD, long year for Towson.
W&M on the last possession of the game.
Brown pretty much because URI can't stop anyone.
Richmond big over a bad VMI team.
JMU comfortable over before they start the CAA South portion of the sked.
Delaware wins because they have maybe the best D in the league & UMass has struggled immensely on that side of the ball.

Delaware 10 @ UMass 17 - UMass had two weeks to prepare and get their defensive woes corrected. Loser on the outside looking in at the playoff picture.

Brown 21 @ Rhode Island 24

Nova 42 @ W&M 21 - Word out of W&M is that they have DB's stronger than every starting OL. Either those are some very strong DB's or.......Nonetheless, the Tribe will have their hands full, and should give a spirited effort in front of the soldout home crowd.

Northeastern 14 @ Towson 17 - Hard fought games that TU wins with a FG as time expires.

Hofstra 7 @ JMU 28 - Nuff said, as the new #1 holds onto their ranking for another week.

VMI 10 @ UR 31 - Bounce back win for the Spiders.

Hofstra at JMU - I've seen them...I believe...

Northeastern 38 at Towson 28 NU has been tested and is ready to go on a mini-run at the expense of the Tigers

Villanova 35 at William & Mary 21 'Cats are getting national attention now!

Brown 28 at Rhode Island 27 URI is on the way back, but suffers yet another tough loss. Tough to with too many youngsters playing key roles against a well-coached Phil Estes team.

Richmond 56 at VMI 7 Only Keydet cannon at the gates will stop the Spiders in this one.

Hofstra 7 at JMU 45 Woe is the Pride after JMU almost got embarrassed in the rain up north

Delaware 57 at UMass 56 Unbelievable. A Don Brown team without a national calibre defense. UNH is already getting excited! ;-)

Villanova 35 at William & Mary 31 VU continues its roll, but W&M gives them a scare in Williamsburg

Brown 24 at Rhode Island 21 Brown a little bit better right now, URI is a yer or two away..
Richmond 49 at VMI 21 Keydets are at home and better than most would ascknowledge

Hofstra 14 at JMU 31 JMU just too strong, and at home.

Texas Tech (4-0) dominated the Minutemen from the outset. The Red Raiders scored on six of seven possessions in the first half and led 42-7 at the intermission.

It was the most first-half points for the Red Raiders since late September 2006 when they scored 42 points against Southeast Louisiana in an eventually 62-0 win.

And it could have been worse. Tremain Swindall, Detron Lewis and All-American Michael Crabtree were each unable to hold onto passes in the end zone.

Massachusetts couldn't summon much resistance the rest of the game.

It’s autumn and the first week of October is upon us, and now the games start getting real serious, especially with conference play becoming more frequent. Here’s my take:

Northeastern 35 Towson 10 – Just a dreadful year for Towson, and they haven’t even played much of the CAA South yet. Northeastern’s been solid, if not always in the win column, and they should start fixing that with a win against the Tigers.

Hofstra 17 JMU 35 – JMU avoided the Maine trap last week after a tough first half and now returns home as the new #1 team in the land. Unlike the previous two weeks, JMU should retain the #1 ranking for another week. Hofstra isn’t a bad side, and they trashed Stony Brook last week, but it’s asking too much for them to go into Harrisonburg and put up too much of a fight. It helps that it’s an early afternoon game as that will lessen the homefield advantage, but Hofstra doesn’t have the horses to contain or keep up with JMU.

villanova 21 William and Mary 24 – nova shocked most observers last week, not winning, but in the ease of their win over Richmond. Now nova has to take the show on the road to a place where they historically have not fared well. W&M had last week off and is a team that is intriguing – they look better than last year, and Phillips is perhaps the best QB in the conference, but they haven’t really been tested to see how good they are. That changes this week. W&M got an extra week to prepare for nova and Laycock should be able to pass on a nova D that’s better against the run. It’ll be close, but I think the Tribe pull it out.

Brown 28 Rhode Island 35 – URI hasn’t always fared well in the annual battle for the state bragging rights, but there’s at least a new attitude in Kingston, if not a successful one yet. Brown’s 2-0 but hasn’t looked dominating, and URI has shown a penchant to be a tough opponent. I like the URI resurgence to continue and the Rams to win the state this year.

Richmond 45 VMI 3 – Richmond’s running game got stuffed last week and Ward wasn’t effective enough throwing the ball to escape the upset on the Main Line. Luckily for Richmond, it’s like a bye week this week with hapless VMI playing host. The talent gap is just too much for this to be anything but a blowout.

Delaware 35 UMass 24 – The most intriguing game of the day outside of Williamsburg happens in Amherst as UD and UMass matchup with the loser looking like a longshot at best to make the playoffs. UD comes in with renewed confidence after a thorough domination of an Albany team that had proved pesky against CAA competition this year. UD’s defense looks legit and they get healthier this week welcoming two starters back, including the beast Marcorelle. On offense, Schoenhoft for UD may have finally found his groove as he looked much more polished in the 2nd half against the Great Danes. UMass is a team coming off a bye week wondering about their identity. Their defense has been non-existent early on and that’s baffling considering all the returners they had. UD in 2004 came into Amherst much the same way they are this year – questionable QB but with a strong running game and tough defense. While Coen may present problems for the Hens, I see ’04 all over again and the Hens walking out of Amherst with the win.

For info on games I listen to, I go to UMass74's blog site...he attended the game and had some interesting comments that buoyed my confidence...

Again, we played really, really hard. UMass made some mistakes that hurt us, but it was an effort to be proud of. I liked the hitting the defense brought. If we build on this, we could have a good year.

Sean Smalls did an excellent job on Michael Crabtree. He had five receptions and one TD on a two yard slant. Whoopee.

Again, nobody quit and Texas Tech going it on fourth down while up big, seemed to keep everybody from UMass working hard.

So that, with two weeks to prepare, has me thinking the defense found it self and will stop the Hens...xpeacex

And seeing as how nova shredded the Richmond D, they should be able to do the same against a W&M D that you don't think as highly of.

Now, take off the last drive where the D went into a prevent defense instead of dominating like they did the rest of the game and we gave up about 200 yards in the air.

W&M looks to be averaging around 190yards passing per game. Granted, they blew out the two teams they played, but still. What makes you think they're going to be able to pass on us from what you've seen so far?

Phillips does, that's why I think they can pass. Richmond is a running team that passes second, W&M is a passing team that can't really run. W&M hasn't played anyone yet outside of NC St so stats and other things aren't very telling. Phillips can throw the rock around, though.

NU 35 Towson 28 - I think the NU running game will give TU fits and keep the ball away from Schaefer long enough to pull out a win

'Nova 34 W&M 28 - The Tribe jumps out to a big lead before the Wildcats storm back to win

URI 31 Brown 28 - Rhody kicks a game winning FG to win the Govs' cup

Richmond 42 VMI 14 - Spiders rebound from the 'Nova loss to record a easy win

JMU 35 Hofstra 14 - #1 Dukes roll all over the Pride. Too much talent on both sides of the ball for HU

You played them at home last year and the W&M people are much more excited about this year's team than last year's so "the word" may not be terribly reliable. Hard to know anything about W&M until this game so we'll have to see.

WMTribe90

The "word" on WM's OL is incorrect. The OL was a question coming into the season, but so far they are performing at least as good as last year's line. VU should be favored, but its obvious jstclmet and his "inside source" know very little about this WM squad. We're improved over last year, but still have plenty of room for improvement. We'll find out Saturday just how far we've come.

Friendly suggestion....:D have your O-Line study last year's Nova/W&M game film, then the Nova/HU game film, then Nova/TU, Nova/UD, and last week's Nova/UR.....The BLITZ COMETH!!!!! Try to stop it if you can.

Phillips is a good QB, and can run and throw with the best of them. But, he like so many QB's before him need blocking. I already feel bad for him, and it's just Tuesday. I wouldn't encourage Phillips to watch any of the aforementioned tapes. It may cause nausea xeekx

I would like to think with [what appear so far to be] quality RBs (3 or 4 of them) W&M will be able to beat the blitz with some quick passed to the RBs in the flat, or some solid runs to beat the pass blitz...

should be a good game. I would bet all my money it will be significantly closer than last year.

Good Luck.

As Laycock said in his Monday interview, he's less concerned about what Jake's absence may do to our offense than what Villanova's D will do to it. They impressed me mightily against Richmond, limiting the Spider running game, and applying pressure to Ward on nearly every passing down.

If Jake can't go it will be RJ Archer under center. As Laycock also said, the content of the offense doesn't change much with Archer in. Similar style QB, with a similar skill set, except lacking the experience. RJ was a starting WR last year, and switched back to QB last Spring to fill the backup gap left by Mike Potts' graduation. Villanova fans have seen him before. Over the past two meetings he had seven catches for 83 yards against the Wildcats.

Good Luck.

Last year's loss to Nova was certainly not on the offense. Two fumbled kickoff returns, and one other fumble led to Nova TD drives of 17, 21 and 8 yards. The offense scored on their first three possessions where the kickoff wasn't fumbled, and totaled 461 yards for the game. Poor defense, and abysmal special teams play was last year's story for the Tribe.

There actually are some Nova football fans out there.

Official attendance numbers do not show many nova football fans "out there". Perhaps a large percentage of them have been captured and put into the underfunded breeding program in an effort to increase their numbers.

However, early reports indicate the species doesn't reproduce well and, once returned to the wild, rarely, if ever, return to the stadium.

If next season is too far away, we'll be having a pretty good home game (some call it Homecoming) on 10/25 against this team from Harrisonburg. They're not too bad. You will notice the Wildcat fans as they will be clad in blue with a giant "V" somewhere on their person.

On 11/22, we invade henland to thump on your football team as a warm-up for the playoffs. Again, we'll be clad in blue with the big symbolic "V" somewhere upon us. We will be the only fans cheering on the 11/22 date.xlolx xnodx xrotatehx xthumbsupx

Homecoming? Of course I know about that, my wife, being a nova grad, loves laughing at the idea of attending a nova game for Homecoming. Like all nova students/alums, she was blissfully unaware of a football at her school until long after graduation.

But hey, we could go - my wife's elementary school in the area is typically inundated with free ticket vouchers to any and all nova games. Normally those vouchers are just thrown in a bin for kids to scribble on during art class, but hey, maybe someone could finally use one of those!

And really, you guys come down to Newark for the games? You do realize nova's been playing in Newark on alternating years for two decades now (longer than that but there's that whole cutting the football program interlude) - it would be nice to finally have some nova fans actually show up for a game in Newark.

I know it'll be a different experience for you, what, actually having people sit next to you and around you, but that's the unfortunate result of a stadium that people come to.

And seriously, what does a nova fan know about football late in November? For the past decade you guys have only been playing that late twice in ten years, and not much before it. Did you find out about it being cold by watching all those Blue Hen playoff games on TV over the years?

Been there every other year for the past 10, since I was in school. Actually left early in 03 when we were losing late, only to hear Gordon drive the field and win the game. And why did I leave early? Delawarites are even worse than Jerseyans at driving in traffic. How far is 95 from the parking lot? Less than a mile? I guess the hillbillies aren't used to driving cars in anything other than a circle.

The DUMBEST contract extension ever given to anyone, in any situation.

Hey, Mickey says among the best coaches in America :p Ok, well maybe Matthews is just sticking up for his buddy, as apparently they are good friends.

"And Cosgrove won’t be second-guessed by his opposition. He was already so highly regarded in CAA circles both for doing more with less and for the loyalty he’s shown his alma mater, but JMU coach Mickey Matthews said Saturday’s game only reinforced his opinion of Cosgrove.

“We think Jack Cosgrove is as good a football coach as there is in America,” Matthews said. “I knew he’d have his guys ready.”

And, Matthews said, when the game was on the line, he knew Cosgrove would not hesitate to be daring.

“When it was 17-10, if Jack scores he’s going for two,” Matthews said. “He had a chance for an upset and his kids were in the game. I’ve been on that sideline too, where the other team’s better. You just want to get the game into the fourth quarter with a chance to win. He had done that. He had done a great job of coaching.”"

Yeah, I'm not getting it either.

Plus the '03 game was in Villanova, not Newark and was won by Delaware. It clinched the A10 Title for UD and the autobid. Maybe you were confused because the majoirty of fans there that day wore blue and gold and were rooting for the Hens.

And the only good thing about Delaware visiting us is the school isn't as much of a douche over tailgating. And it's much more tolerable now with assigned spots in the tailgating lot. it always pissed me off seeing them allowing delaware fans into the "exclusive" tailgating lot and taking away our spots.

Yes, but VMI runs that double wing offense....and it's purely assignment football for defenses. W&M has had their annual share of preparing for them, OHIO more than likely overlooked VMI as a easy win. Also VMI can't really stop anyone regardless....so every mistake on their part means you end up going up a score.......:)

Come to think about it, that's an odd comment for a nova fan to make, at least one who claims to have actually attended a nova football game (the number is very low of course). Leaving the parking lots there onto Lancaster Avenue to get to the Blue Route is really no trip in the park either. Again, about a mile to go but seems to take hours. Maybe Radnor is full of hillbillies too then? xlolx

Delaware hillbillies don't know any back ways around the traffic. Instead of going down Lancaster, you go down Ithan towards South Campus. Hook a right past "Rape trail" (Hoya, do you guys still call it that? Not that a rape ever happened there, but it was dark as **** at night, so it kinda just got that name I guess. Basically, it's your first right when you see the dorms of South Campus). Then you make a left at the train station and go through the neighborhood. And eventually, you end up at the corner where Campus Corner and the Coastal is. Voila. You just missed all the traffic from Ithan to 320.

And anyway, I go the other way down Montgomery and up to Route 1.

My directions may be difficult for you though. They involve not only left turns, but rights as well.
