It's located in a crime infested infested area of Philadelphia. I went to high school with a friend who got a scholarship there as a kicker. He said it was not uncommon to hear gunshots outside the dorms after midnight. The area has improved in recent years but this one happended at 1:45pm in the afternoon. I would never allow my children to attend Temple.

What the hell does this have to do with Temple?? I could post articles about gang violence in L.A. & say this is why USC will always suck & they're in just a bad an area as Temple.

Al Golden is doing good things with their football program, if he sticks around they'll be one of the top teams in the MAC in '09 & '10.

Exactly what does this have to do with Temple? I'm a Temple alum and dissapointed you have such a negative attitude towards a great schools located in a city with a ton of opportunities. Is it in the greatest area in the world? No, but it's not in a dangerous area either unless you completely lack common sense. I never once felt threatened or uncomfortable off or around campus simply because i used common sense. Basically any sort of crime that happens near campus has nothing to do with students and is just the locals getting out of hand.

I agree. Temple is 1-3, but could easily be 3-1. The MAC is a good fit for them and I think they will be competetive in the MAC very soon.

Because no recruit in his right mind would attend Temple if they know anything about Philly. That's a major reason why they have always sucked, the location is horrible and crime in the area is very high. By the way, USC is not located in a bad area of L.A.

Oh... I was going to post a response because I thought this was an ignorant thread about the status of the football program. Instead, it's an bitch-fest about the campus.

It's nice see aust42 has moved onto new topics to bitch and whine about. A couple of weeks ago it was postponed high school football games. This week, Temple/North Philly.

What's on tap for next week? Are you going to complain about how handicapped people get all the kick-ass parking spots?

Serious question - have you ever been to the USC campus? Driven around the neighborhood that surrounds it?

Yes I was in Anaheim last week on business and drove down to their campus before going to the USC/Ohio State game while I was there. Almost crashed the rental car a few times gawking at all the hot women walking around campus.

I understand you don't like me Mr. Garvey b/c your views are the complete opposite of mine. I don't advocate canceling football games due to rain and you do. That's what makes this site so entertaining at times. I probably could have phrased my point better about Temple and not used the word SUCK. My only point is it's in a bad area of Philly, and it's hard to get good quality recruits to attend a school like Temple. Temple will always be a bad program IMO no matter who the coach is. I don't know of many campus' who have some thug stand over a cop, shoot him in broad daylight, murdering him at 1:45pm in the afternoon. That'd be a big deterent for me as a recruit.

Yeah what's up with the handicap people getting all the kick-a$$ parking spots? I went to a Wawa convenient store the other day and the entire front lot was reserved for handicapers. Must have been 10 empty spots there. I had to park around the dag gone side and walk an extra 15 feet! Dam handicapers! xsmiley_wix

You understand wrong sir. I've never disliked anyone for disagreeing with my views. I dislike people who are dismissive of other views and those who hold said views. That's why there's a very short list of a$$holes on this board whom I have no desire to meet, and for what it's worth, you are not on that list.

I find your rants amusing and, at times, ill-informed, but I recognize them for what they are: angry ramblings. It kind of reminds me of Adam Carolla's "This week in rage" skit he does every Friday.

As for Temple always being bad... that's not true. It's unlikely they'll ever be an elite program such as Penn St. But, they've achieved success in the past as a middle tier program. That's the direction they're heading now, and the program is much better. They play competitively against similar caliber teams. 5 years ago, they couldn't stay on the same field with most of the MAC.

There certainly seems to be very few incidents of Temple students being the victim of crimes, but I can understand how the setting can detract somewhat from the overall campus experience.

There is a multitude of reasons for Temple's struggles in football IMO. Improving but still not great on campus facilities, poor recent history, small fan base and lack of excitment for the program, an off-campus stadium, and just the general disdain and ridicule the Philly media directs at the program.

If you put the Temple campus is a more desirable setting, such as suburban philly, i think they do well as all other factors are in their favor. It is a good school with a variety of strong programs. It is located in a major city with strong job/internship opportunities. Plus all the talent in and around the Philly area they can tap into as they are the only FBS school on town.

However the negatives seem to still outweigh the positives at this time. If Golden can get a winning season or two the tide can turn and he can sell more of the positive attributed to recruits.

Temple's football team has sucked for quite some time, but almost none of it is due to the crime that occurs in the neighborhoods that surround Temple's campus.

As for Temple the school, it's an excellent school with a great reputation and facilities. Again, in spite of its location in Philly.

xlolx xlolx xlolx Here's a thought. I'll drop you off 5 blocks away from USC's campus & you walk those 5 blocks. I'll pick you up at the center of USC's campus & you tell me it's not a bad area. Please someone help me out here, USC is in one of the crappier areas of L.A.

But did you just get off the freeway and right onto campus? Area around the campus is scary bad...

Temple picked a winner when they hired Al Golden. I've watched him since his days at Red Bank Catholic high school. The kid is a winner. The progress that he has made at Temple is remarkable. Let's give him credit. The program is headed in the right direction. xthumbsupx

Yeah I just got off from the freeway. It was daytime, I just parked on campus and walked around a little bit killing time. Went down to University Park and took a picture of Tommy Trojan and stared at college women. I know L.A. is gang central so I'm sure it's not far from campus, I'll take ya'lls word for it.
