View Full Version : All-Time non-FBS NFL roster?

nerd

Or, I guess, non-I-A, because so many schools have reclassified over the years. But they can't be I-As when they played there...

If you had to assemble a 53-man NFL roster of former FCS (or I-AA, as it was known... and like I said, D2 or D3 even) players, what would it be?

I'm younger than 25, so I'm sure I'm missing a lot of historically great ones. Help me out. Feel free to copy and paste and mangle this:

QB Kurt Warner, Steve McNair, Tony Romo
RB Walter Payton, Brian Westbrook, Joe Perry
FB Marion Motley, Brandon Jacobs
WR Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, Gary Clark
WR Terrell Owens, John Stallworth, Charlie Joiner
TE Jackie Smith
LT Rayfield Wright, Roosevelt Brown
LG Larry Little, Lou Creekmur
C Jim Langer
RG Gene Upshaw
RT Jackie Slater

LE Buck Buchanan, Michael Strahan, Aaron Smith
NT

Probably a homer pick, but I'd take Charles Haley over Jared Allen

Not a homer pick. Haley is better. How about Harry Carson at LB?

At this point, I'd also take Gary Clark over Colston, but that could change.

Also wondering if Utah State was I-A when Merlin Olsen was there, and Tulsa with Steve Largent. And Gene Upshaw and Darrell Green from Texas A&I.

Anyone know?

Can't say he's had the career the current people on the list had, but Brandon Jacobs from SIU is showing himself to be a feature running back. I'd rank him behind the RB's listed already, though.

Personally, I've never liked the guy but he does now trail only the great Mr. Rice in all-time TD receptions in the NFL.

Whether you like him or not, he's one of the greatest WRs to play the game. He'll be in the HoF at some point, and its the stats that get you there, not personality.

Since this is all "non FBS" (presumably non D-1 before D-1 was subdivided), I'm surprised I haven't seen Terry Bradshaw (D-II Louisiana Tech) mentioned. Maybe he was but I haven't seen it.

I also think RB Joe Delaney (I-AA Northwestern State) and LB Gary Reasons (I-AA Northwestern State) are up there; though Delaney's life and career were tragically cut short.

Kenny Anderson out of Augustana was an awfully good QB too.

Warner makes history
The News
Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner made some history by becoming the first player ever to complete at least 75 percent of his throws while averaging 15 yards per attempt in a single game, according to the Arizona Republic.
Our View
Warner had a fabulous game Week 2 against he dreadful Dolphins defense, throwing for 361 yards and three touchdowns on 19-of-24 passing.

I'll be a homer and put a plug in that you should have taken Ben Patrick of the Cardinals. I don't think either of these two are going to light it up this year, but I think there's more upside to Patrick. xthumbsupx

Chris Wilcox of the Ravens is better than them both. He's basically replaced Heap who can't stay off away from the medical staff.

Speaking of non-FBS tight ends, Eric Green was a 1st round pick and had a nice 10 year career. Pretty sure he made the pro-bowl a couple times with the Steelers.

He single handedly beat my Towson team. Back in the early 90's in the Rittigiliano Liberty days. God I hated those Liberty teams.
