until repairs are done to Reliant Stadium. Rice Stadium holds 47,000 but when the tarp is expand it can seat up to 70,000. The stadium hosted the Superbowl back in 1974.

Rice Stadium is a fine football venue. 70,000 seats for a school with something like 3500 undergrads! My Dad got season tix for the Owls after my sister went there and kept them for years afterwards.

I follow the Owls casually, but my sister (who was on the old Cotton Bowl committee back in the SWC days) is still a loyal follower.

I bet she was happy when Rice won the College World Series a few seasons back. xthumbsupx

Love Cincinnati as a city, with the German culture and the 12-way chili. Too many bad memories of '76 and '77 to back the Reds!

I'm a Rice fan (second to SHSU)...
Football stadium no longer holds 70,000+. They closed the end zones. I guess they could use them, but they have a tarp over them. Not sure the situation there...
The press box is horribly inadequate. Yuck! Not sure how the NFL will deal with that one if that becomes the case. Tight quarters, I guess? Figure lots of media will be at the game if they do play there because it's an interesting situation.
Concessions would be a MAJOR mess at Rice Stadium as would parking and restrooms...not sure how they would pull that off.

TT - they mentioned they'd be rolling the tarps up
question for you though... why cant they just use the Astrodome? it's right there?

No chance. Astrodome would be even worse concession-wise. Does not have a legitimate field in place for use and not sure that the working conditions for press and anyone is ideal compared to Rice Stadium.

There's still people working there, but the facility is a dump in terms of being able to handle an event the magnitude of an NFL game. Concessions are all moved out of there. Not sure if the bathrooms can handle that many people...things like that.

The Astrodome has been a dump for quite a while, it was horrible the last time Southern played there in 2001. The coaches headsets never worked when we played there.

Two articles in today's Chronicle...
On Friday, SMG is expected to give an update that could tell the Texans when they can return to their home stadium.

Why not move the home games farther inland?
Come to the San Antonio and the Alamodome. We sold it out for the Saints, and the Texans could use this as an opportunity to steal some of the Cowboys fanbase.

That could work but I think they want to keep it here in Houston. I want them to keep it here since I have access to free tickets for each home game.

I also heard that the seats in the upper levels of Rice Stadium are barely safe for fans. Crumbling concrete and old wooden bleachers etc. How about University of Houston? I know the stadium is smaller but much nicer and more modern.

Yep -- no reason not to have it in Houston if a facility is available.

That stadium has had their issues with hosting major events, especially when they try to put more people in there -- see "Bleachergate" between UH and Texas.

I drove by Reliant Stadium today and it is amazing that those pieces flew off.
