SoCon Announces Week Three Football Players of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for the games played on Saturday, Sept. 13. Georgia Southern quarterback Antonio Henton was named Offensive Player of the Week, Western Carolina linebacker Quintin Phillips was selected Defensive Player of the Week, Elon running back A.J. Harris was tabbed Freshman of the Week and Elon return specialist Bo Williamson was voted as the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week were selected by the league’s sports information directors.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Antonio Henton, Georgia Southern, QB, So.

Henton accounted for all five Georgia Southern touchdowns in a 34-27 overtime win over Northeastern Saturday night. The sophomore connected on a 65-yard touchdown pass in the final minute to tie the game, then scored on a 25-yard run in the second play of OT for the game-winner. Henton’s 298 yards through the air marks the fifth-highest passing yardage total in program history.

Other Nominees: Scott Riddle (Elon), Mike Brown (Furman), Jordan Hazard (Chattanooga) and Dustin Taliaferro (Samford).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Quintin Phillips, Western Carolina, LB, Jr.

Phillips led all defenders with a season-high 16 tackles, including four solo stops against No. 25/27 Liberty in Cullowhee. WCU limited the Flames’ offense -- which entered the game averaging 46.5 points per game -- to just 19 in the 19-16 loss.

Other Nominees: Chris Rogers (Georgia Southern), Jarvis Newson (Chattanooga) and Jeremy Richardson (Samford).

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: A.J. Harris, Elon, RB, R-Fr.

The redshirt freshman tailback rushed for a career-high 91 yards and three touchdowns on just seven carries in Elon’s 66-12 win over Presbyterian. Harris also caught three passes for 41 yards, totaling 132 all-purpose yards as Elon set a new school record for total yards (667).

Other Nominees: Tersoo Uhaa (Furman), J.B. Shippy (Georgia Southern), Quan Warley (Western Carolina) and Riley Hawkins (Samford).

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bo Williamson, Elon, RS, Sr.

Williamson amassed a career-high 120 return yards – 106 on three kickoff returns and 14 on a punt return – on his way to collecting a career-high 287 all-purpose yards in the No. 18 Phoenix’s 66-12 victory over Presbyterian Saturday at Rhodes Stadium. The senior also blocked a first quarter PC punt that was returned for a touchdown.

Other Nominees: Riley Hawkins (Samford), Adam Mims (Furman), Adam Hearns (Western Carolina) and Patrick Bolen (Georgia Southern).

Henton definitely deserved it, imo. He is a great and versatile player who knows how to run and isn't afraid to unleash the dragon.

I'm surprised that someone from ASU didn't get some kind of award, even with the week off. Maybe ??????????????????????????? best practice of the week player. xeyebrowx

That's frickin' hilarious! Thank you so much for posting, I'll be laughing in the morning.

As for POWs (not McCain), Henton played really well, but I'm surprised that Riddle didn't get it just based on stats. They were crazy.

Yeah, I was yelling "He unleashed the dragon!" during the game. I'm sure the other GSU students thought I was crazy.

The game with BU wasn't significant enough. Now if was Elon having a week off, there'd still be gripes that an Elon player didn't get POW.;)

It seems that App's opponent wasn't much weaker than Elon's. ;) Maybe there should be a recount of the votes.
