Guys,
My annual suggestion to everyone who is too far away from their FCS home to get the family together and go see a DII or DIII game in your area.
Cheaper admission
Cheaper eats
Lower key, family-friendly tailgating
Same action
Today, The Cap'n is going to take in Iowa Wesleyan Tigers @ Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers in a DIII clash at 1p CST.
Support your local DII and DIII programs.

I've been to many D-III games at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. Everything Cap says is right on the money. I'll just add that it is football in the purest form. And the best part...no TV timeouts!

UD is supporting our local D2 team today - to the tune of a healthy 5 or 6 figure payday...

Love the small venues, with big, fast, hard hitting players.
Yes indeed, there is ample opportunity for first class football for pennies on the dollar. Not to mention watching the game on the track around the field. xnodx

DII games are fun. Went to UNC road games at both Nebraska-Omaha and Western State while we were DII.
Also, I've got a friend that pitches for Iowa Wesleyan's baseball team.xthumbsupx

In Montana we have a lot of NAIA schools to support, still exciting football.

Yes, I support them. Most of Ivy League's academic peers are D-III in athletics (University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins, MIT, etc.)
But my favorite D-III team is Mount Union.

Had great fun at the IA Wesleyan/UWSP game yesterday. Missed the half-and-half raffle by ONE number - woulda won $201!!! Had I won, I would have returned it right back to the UWSP softabll team who was sponsoring and benefitting.
UWSP slaughtered IWC. It was 38-0 when I left. Great action. The absolute same hard hitting and spectacular scoring as any UNI/SIU, Montana/EWU, Appy/GSU, USC/OSU game.
Sixteen ounce Diet Coke at the concession: $1.25; popcorn, 50 cents. Find that at the Big House...or even UNI!

Cap'n, I must agree with you for only the 2nd or 3rd time ever. That is the most sensible and honest thing I have ever read, coming from you. Thanks!

closest d2 team to me is Brevard College and 2 years ago, I went to their 1st game against NAIA UVA-Wise. It was a GREAT small time college football atmosphere. I need to get back to one of their games. Not going to Charleston for the WCU-El Cid game so I may take in the Brevard vs Lenoir-Rhyne game. Cap'n you're right, good football.
GO CATAMOUNTS!!!

The only D.II or D.III school within an hour of my house is Johns Hopkins. And I'll be damned if I go there and root for them!

Junior Ivy played DIII ball and got a lot out of it (including his best friends). Wesley and Widener are both solid DIII programs that are very close to our home.
How could Wesley lose to Delaware Valley, fer gawdsakes?xconfusedx xsmhx :p

Nope. It's even better.
This week, Cap'n Cat, Lieutenant Cat and Corporal Cat are taking in Winona State (MN) @ Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall, MN. Way out west.

I'm within driving distance of Emory and Henry (DIII) and Carson-Newman and Tusculum. Usually some high quality football going on there...

Try a Catawba College Game, usually ranke din the top 25 for D-II and pretty fun to watch.

Ahhh, if you'd get your lazy ass to a neighboring state, you'd find one.

You did inspire me to get off my lazy ass and see where the closest DII and DIII schools are.
DII: Western New Mexico in Silver City, NM. According to Google maps, it's a 4.5 hour drive (308 miles) for me. The shortest route, through the Pinal Mountains is 40 miles shorter, but an hour longer.
DIII: Redlands, in Redlands, CA. 4.5 hours (319 miles) almost all of it along I-10. I've done that drive a few times, as its on the way to L.A. Screw that!
Sun Devil Stadium is 4 miles away instead. xnodx

As I thought, some good distances.
Don't Chapparal and Yavapai have football programs?

I have no idea. Mesa CC is close, but I never got into juco football. Growing up in the northeast, there are very few junior/community colleges with any sort of athletic departement, let alone football.
I did have U of Arizona season tickets for several years. The level of talent under Mackovic I think qualifed them as juco.

That's true but I'd venture to say that most JUCO programs in your area are as good as most D-III programs in the northeast. That's not a knock on D-III football in the northeast but rather a compliment to JUCO in the southwest.

You misunderstand me. It's nothing to do with talent, but I just don't care. Talent aside, DIII games in the Northeast states attract bigger crowds than the jucos around here. The way I see it, nobody around here cares, and when in Rome... :) The talent is good though. There aren't many alternatives for players around here who are good enough to play college, but not Division I. The dearth of DII and DIII teams is a shame, especially in light of how many kids are graduating high school in Arizona.
In all seriousness, it's hard to get into programs where players stay for 2 years at most. If he's really good as 1st year, you think, "I wonder what Pac-10/MWC/WAC/Big Sky team will recruit him?"

I did not misunderstand you. I merely made an observation and comparison. I fully agree with your statement that I have in bold. xpeacex
