DURHAM – Senior John Clements and sophomore Hugo Souza, a couple of big-play safeties on defense for the University of New Hampshire football team, enjoyed their visit to the United States Military Academy last week.
Especially the 28-10 thrashing they handed Army to open the Wildcats' season.

Today, Clement and Souza and their teammates will try to get a similar kick out of Kingston. They're back on the road for their first Colonial Athletic Association game of the year against Rhode Island.

An option/running team for the last several years, Rhode Island -- 1-1 after a 27-24 win over Monmouth and a 16-0 loss to Fordham -- has switched to a spread offense and is throwing the ball a lot under first-year coach Darren Rizzi.

Clements, for one, can't wait.

"That's a defensive back's dream right there," he said. "Last week was good, running to the ball and tackling. This week we get to cover some guys and lock down out there."

Army wanted to run the ball with its own new option attack and could do little against the Wildcats.

I wouldn't say RI has looked like trash.UNH ineptness at times on defense has helped the Rams,but I think they have looked fairly good for the most part,at least through the air.How they were shut out last week by Fordham while we give up 43 is disconcerting.:(

There's a lot of offensive talent out there in the CAA & from what I've seen the offensive side of the ball is outsmarting the defensive side thus far.

IMO, it's not that the defense throughout the league has been extremely bad but the offense has been extremely good, both mentally and physically.
