Some remarks from a columnist about SHSU...
I'm brushing up on Sam Houston State today. The good folks from the state of Sam Houston (what's the capital of Sam Houston? Anybody?) sent me a football media guide and some game notes, and I think there are a few things everybody should know.

From ESPN...
Sam Houston State at Kansas (Saturday, 7 p.m. FCS): Lack of a running game doomed Kansas against South Florida. The Jayhawks will have a chance to work on that weakness against the Bearkats, who haven't played in more than three weeks since beating East Central on Aug. 28. Sam Houston QB Rhett Bomar returns to the Big 12 with a high-powered offense that leads FCS teams in scoring offense and turnover margin, is third in passing efficiency and fourth in rushing and total offense.

Notes from Big XII conference call...
“We’re trying to get a handle on Sam Houston State,” Mangino said. “They’ve played only one game this year, but we’ll be ready for when they get to our place.”

Relatively speaking, our No. 1 defense did a pretty good job against the Kansas offense...they "only" scored 20 offensive points while our starters were on the field...we took the defensive starters out at halftime while they kept their No. 1 offense on the field through the third quarter...of course, it was all our offense could do to get back to the line of scrimmage...the Kansas defensive front was by far the quickest we've ever seen, and most of them are back...Sam is further along offensively than we were last year, especially considering it was only our 2nd game in Condell's system, so I would expect them to be able to string together more offense than we did...but they'll be up against it for sure.

The Jayhawks’ game Saturday night against Davy Crockett - I mean, Sam Houston - will be broadcast on Fox College Sports. UVerse offers FCS; Cox does not. This morning, the hosts of the Game Plan, a sports talk show on KSGO, were mounting a campaign to try and change that.

From the Huntsville Item...SHSU football is back up and running...
Things are slowly getting back to normal for the Sam Houston State football team as the Bearkats prepare for this weekend’s game against Kansas.
After the coaches dismissed the team last Thursday afternoon and canceled Saturday’s contest against Prairie View A&M with Hurricane Ike bearing down on the Gulf Coast, the players reported back Sunday and lifted weights Monday.
“Everybody is accounted for and we are finally getting ready to play this weekend. We are a go as scheduled,” SHSU head coach Todd Whitten said. “The guys came back Sunday and we were able to lift weights. The good things is that the university has power and the guys have been able to stay on campus with friends.”
The Bearkats (1-0) are scheduled to fly out of Houston on Friday morning and head up to Kansas a day before facing the 19th-ranked Jayhawks (1-1) in Lawrence.
Sam Houston had a full practice at Bowers Stadium on Tuesday and will do the same today and Thursday.
“We have full power at the field house so we have all the resources we need to get ready to play,” Whitten added. “We are going to practice in full pads the rest of the week then leave on Friday morning. We are approaching this game like all the rest.”

I was pretty impressed with Kansas on last Friday. I didn't think they had the speed to play with USF, but they made big plays until USF adjusted. Then they rebounded to make it a game again. How did Ressing get out of Texas?

Typical...this one coming from this link, http://www.kansan.com/stories/2008/sep/16/morning_brew/
BEARKATS?
One of the greatest things about collegiate athletics is the prevalence of odd team nicknames — there’s truly something for everyone. For those who enjoy etiquette: the Centenary Gentlemen. For those in search of general hilarity: the Stetson Hatters. For people who love penguins but live in northeast Ohio: the Youngstown State Penguins. And for the brave few who like their mascots fictional and misspelled: the Sam Houston State Bearkats.
Kansas will play host to a swarm(?), covey(?), flock(?) of Bearkats this weekend when Sam Houston State visits for the Jayhawks’ final non-conference tune up. But what exactly is a Bearkat?
According to Sam Houston State’s official Web site, the Bearkat was never named after a real animal, despite rumors that its inspiration came from bear-and-kat-like creatures such as the Kinkajou or the Binturong (I am not making this up).
Instead, the Bearkat is “a combination of the fiercest fighting qualities of both the bear and the cat families.” Thankfully for Kansas, the description didn’t mention whether the Bearkats play decent run defense.

Montemayor: Saturday’s game almost meaningless for Jayhawks, Sam Houston State does not present enough of a challenge to prepare Kansas for Big 12 play (Daily Kansan)
On the subject of scheduling, perhaps coach Mark Mangino should have reconsidered scheduling Sam Houston State altogether. The team’s division (I-AA) has more A’s than an average report card. Vegas won’t even post a line on this game.
The drubbing that is about to ensue in 48 hours will be far from family-friendly. Any parents accompanied by their kids will have some consoling to do after their little ones witness several dozen mangled Bearkat bodies strewn about. Think Mickey Mouse being mauled to death by a tiger at Disney World.
Kansas 87, Sam Houston State 3.

Finally After three-week layoff, Bearkats ready to battle No. 19 Kansas (Huntsville Item)
http://www.itemonline.com/sports/local_story_263161121.html?keyword=topstory
After three frustrating weeks, the wait to get back on the field is finally over for the Sam Houston State football squad. Today at 6 p.m., the Bearkats battle the Big 12’s Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kan.
Following a 58-14 victory over East Central Oklahoma in the season opener on Aug. 28, the Bearkats (1-0) had a bye week before Hurricane Ike ravaged the Texas coast, forcing Sam Houston to cancel last weekend’s home game against Prairie View A&M.
It’s been a tough stretch for the Kats. Just when the season looked like it was under way, the three weeks off has been just like starting fall camp all over again with practice after practice. Throw in the fact that the majority of the Huntsville area was without power this week and food was in short supply, it’s a welcome relief that things seem to be getting back to normal.

“We have to start fast,” wide receiver Jason Madkins said. “If we start off slow then we will give them a chance to come in and take over. But if we start out fast and the defense gets it going, then I actually think we can win this game.”
I like that thinking. Yes we can beat Kansas. Is it likely? No. But if we play clean, come with a competent game plan, and play good D, its possible. Anything is possible.

I'm with you Pat. We also need to make sure Bomar looks Madkins' way a lot during the game. He needs to take advantage of his height.
Below are the heights of the DBs on the KU roster. Madkins could have a great night if it all comes together.

What you saw in the Fargodome last year is what he is capable of. I think he is going to have a great year this year. He has some a big target to throw to (Jason Madkins 6-5,215) and a good RB to carry the rock. Look for the Kats to put up some big numbers this year.

BW (on first half)...our team feels like they can be up. Proud of offense and defense. Had a couple long passes. Still a competitor and we got a shot, just got to put the ball in end zone when we get down there.
BW (on KU)...scramble plays, I coached DB and I understand those things when you cover so long. Front is getting pressure. DBs and LBs are doing great job on coverage.
BW (on FBS games)...we're working on FBS game, talked to Whitten and Dirk, some of the prelim work...we could really wait and get higher paydays. Always in contact with different universities...seems to fall in place after first of year. Keep working on it and keep lining up people.
BW (on scheduling issue)...we've talked to PV and worked well with SHSU. We decided that we'd move forward a year. Come to SHSU in 2009 and to PV in 2010. We're going to have to look at going to 2009 because road on first three weeks in 2010. WIU, PV and Baylor. Might go to PV in 2009 so we had a home game on 9/11/2010. Trying to get people to play us and come to our place. We'd like to have six home games, possibly even seven like 2004. Trying to balance. Don't want to be gone three straight weeks. Some of the challenges we look at and avoid as much as possible. Football is always very challenging. At least not scheduling as many conference games as we have to. Even MBB getting difficult with BM and JHooten, difficult for people to come to Huntsville. Higher game guarantees.

BW (on Oct 4 opening)...SHSU started last Thursday and work some on Friday, JBarfield seeking for potential foes. Talked to Tom Burnett. Several schools in SLC in situation (SFA, Nicholls). Probably have 5 or 6 team list. Come down to whether or not we can get them in Huntsville. May look into traveling, may have to get in plane to do it. Like to play that game if we can. Help us as we look as season develops.
BW (on playoffs/seven wins)...when we had Rita, last year on playoff committee. Lot of canceled games. Committee did deal with that and take into consideration. They'd look at it again, hope to have that opportunity. Always constantly looking at. We'll hit the ground Monday and make it happen.
BW (on SHSU/hurricane)... athletic facilities fared well. Few leaks, had them before when we had good rain. We had one window in the baseball facility slid out of track. Outside of that, SHSU athletics held up well. Thoughts and prayers to everyone. Part of living on coast. Proud of way Pres. Gaertner and everyone handled it. Coaches have handled it well, get fans and I think made good decisions to take care of student-athletes and games. One thing Monday, trying to schedule games for football and other sports. Evaluate where we can get better in decisions for these kind of events. Thanks Coach Thompson, Hinze and staff.

He's only responsible for two. The other bounced off of Houston's hands and on that first one...he may have avoided it if he didn't overthrow a wide open WR a few plays prior...

Our defense was the liability today as well as the turnovers. When you can not make open field tackles you are going to get burnt.

Team played a strong game. Just made a few mistakes that cost the game. Our kicking game is not strong AT ALL. We are still lacking the PK duties. Overall I was happy with the performance. I know we left an impression. SLC get ready.
