By the way Furman being # 3 is great also. Says a lot for both programs.

Very flawed article.
Some correct stats that he missed.
Furman has won Southern Conference titles 7 times in the past 20 years ('85, '88, '89, '90, '99, '01 and '04). This compares favorably to the 5 won by App St ('86, '87, '91, '95 and '99).
Furman has reached the1-AA National Title game 3 times ('85, '88 and '01) while App St has never reached that level. Of course as you mention, Furman won the National Title in '88.
Furman's overall 1-AA playoff record is 15-12. App St's is 8-12. Seven more playoff wins to the Paladins credit.
ASU has more NFL players come out of thier program than Furman, I would counter that Furman's league leading graduation rate (75% in 2004) and league leading NCAA Academic Progress Ranking (983 in 2004) more than offset that. App St is not in the Southern Conference top 5 in either.
