SoCon Announces Week Two Football Players of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its football players of the week for the games played on Saturday, Sept. 6. Appalachian State running back Robert Welton was named Offensive Player of the Week, Furman linebacker Brandon Williams was selected Defensive Player of the Week, Wofford quarterback Mitch Allen was tabbed Freshman of the Week and Elon return specialist Karlos Sullivan was voted as the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week were selected by the league’s sports information directors.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Robert Welton, Appalachian State, RB, So.

Welton set career highs with 161 rushing yards on 10 carries (16.1 ypc) and three touchdowns in Appalachian State’s 56-7 win over Jacksonville. Welton’s three touchdowns came on runs of 44, 2 and 72 yards. His three touchdown runs mark the eighth time in the past 13 games that a Mountaineer has rushed for three or more touchdowns.

Other Nominees: Andre Roberts (The Citadel), Antonio Henton (Georgia Southern), Tony Pastore (Chattanooga), Scott Riddle (Elon), Jordan Sorrells (Furman), Richie Fordham (Samford), Marquel Pittman (Western Carolina) and Andy Strickland (Wofford).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Brandon Williams, Furman, LB, Sr.

Williams led Furman in tackles against Virginia Tech with 11 and headlined a Paladin defense that registered four quarterback sacks in a 24-7 loss. Williams had two tackles for loss and one sack in addition to seven solo tackles. Furman limited the Hokies to three points in the first half, and of Virginia Tech’s three touchdown drives, only one was longer than 31 yards.

Other Nominees: Chris Covington (Georgia Southern), Seth Goldwire (Wofford), Travis Dowda (Appalachian State), Brandon Wiggins (Elon), Ty Levie (Samford), Tony Swafford (Chattanooga) and Abram Scott (Western Carolina).

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Mitch Allen, Wofford, QB, Fr.

The redshirt freshman led the team with 135 yards on eight carries with a pair of touchdowns. Allen averaged 16.9 yards per carry as the Terriers’ offense registered 434 rushing yards in a 41-23 win over Charleston Southern. His fourth quarter touchdown runs came from 29 and 42 yards out. Allen was also 1-for-1 passing for eight yards.

Other Nominees: Rod Harland (The Citadel), J.B. Shippy (Georgia Southern), Richie Fordham (Samford), Jason Jones (Appalachian State) and Quan Warley (Western Carolina).

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Karlos Sullivan, Elon, Jr., RS

Sullivan amassed a career-high 130 return yards – 106 on five punt returns and 24 on a kickoff return – to go with his interception despite playing in a torrential downpour courtesy of Tropical Storm Hanna. Sullivan averaged 21.2 yards per punt return, powered by a career-long 81 yard return for a touchdown in the second quarter of Elon’s 30-20 win at Stony Brook.

Other Nominees: Patrick Mugan (Wofford), Adam Hearns (Western Carolina), Trent Hawk (Furman) and Jordan Hazzard (Chattanooga).

Where does this leave the young man who came in from Tech?

Congrats to Robert Welton, but I don't see how rushing 161 yards against Jacksonville State is more impressive than Andre Roberts Catching 166 Yards against Clemson and scoring a touchdown. He also returned kickoffs between 20-45 yards. I know, homer complaint, but had to say it.

Currently he seems to be 3rd on the depth chart. And didn't get much time in this game, could be falling down?... not sure. He had 3 rushes for 6 yds in this game.

No State in there, just Jax.

But the arguement can always be made for another person. Hell on the Def side I though Dowda would have got it for the 2 ints (one being for a TD), but he is a reserve and was against the JU backup QB.

I'm OK with everything you said except "shlep". I think that Shlep may be someone you watch out for, especially when the Hillbillies play the cadets Oct 4 !!:D

The main thing I took out of our Va Tech game is that we may actually have a defense. xeyebrowx It has been so long that I still have my fingers crossedxnodx

That and Virginia Tech has no offense which is no secret.xnodx

Tyrod Taylor did seem to have his way though running the ball.

Elon's Terrell Hudgins snags 11 passes for 138 yds. 1 for a 57 yd TD in a Monsoon over Stoneybrook and does NOT get nominated. Just another day at the Office. for the 2 time All-American.
Congrats to the winners

That's OUR only consolation.... that a big performance by Andre Roberts against clempson was expected and therefore not remarkable.

Yes, I don't quite get this stuff.

It seems more like PR they hand out evenly to every school rather than true performers.

I agree. You give up only three points to the ACC champs in a half you've got something working.

HUDGINS AGAIN SHOWED HE IS AN INFERIOR PLAYER TO CADET ROBERTS...ANDRE HAD 2 LESS CATCHES AND MORE YARDS AND THE SAME AMOUNT OF TOUCHDOWNS AGAINST THE KLEMPISN TIGRES AS HUDGINS HAD AGAINST A BIG SOUTH NOBODY.

The players of the week are selected by the league’s sports information directors. (from each of the schools)

Been this way for a number of years.

Easy explanation: Your SID nominated Scott Riddle for Offensive Player of the Week. You're right, though, just another day at the office. The Elon SID office. Obviously they felt Scott's stats were more impressive.

unless the same rules apply here, in which you can't nominate someone from your school?

The nominations come from the players' own schools along with a description of the game's accomplishments.

Reason being: 1. the team's own staff knows best how significant the individual accomplishments were . 2. Each staff can not spend a lot of time on delving into other teams' player performance.

...or they do not. or a combo of the two? The ACC has been really impressive the first 2 weeks of the season, haven't they? The ACC = MAC, imo.

When you consider how good VT's defense is, that our defense was on the field for 61 snaps, and we made several big stands, I don't really care who it was. Our offense didn't do much, but that was to be expected. Lead to a lot of good field position for the Hokies.

When FBS and FCS teams meet, the best indicator is the first half, when the scholarship gap is not as large. Furman held their first team offense to three points in a half. This was the #17 team in the country last week (and most are thinking that ECU is a lot better than many thought).

That was a strong performance from Furman.

inferior? inferior? that really hurts coming from you of all posters.
I made a simple point on the performance on a particular player from my Alma Mater. I did not slam any other performances. In fact I praised and complimented the weekly winners. I simply pointed a typical over-looked effort.
Now your comments have shown what makes the Citadel reputation of to make yourself look better you have to make others look INFERIOR?
It is what it is ....and you is bull-#$@&! The Hundley did in fact sink.

Ha. What I get for writing quickly. It was a typo.

Either way, still a long time on the field for the Paladins, much of it defending a short field.
