The Flying Dutchmen?

I was thinking about this yesterday while mowing my lawn...Why did Hostra change their nickname from the Flying Dutchmen to the Pride? For teams like Elon (formerly the Fighting Christians), I can understand the name change. But what was wrong with Flying Dutchmen? Also, while searching I ran into some pages that said Hofstra Flying Dutchmen for women's basketball on ESPN.com. Do they still use that name?

Yeah, I agree that "the Pride" leaves a lot to be desired. Never really heard the reason for the change. BTW, there's a D-III school just west of the Lehigh Valley called Lebanon Valley College who are still called the Flying Dutchmen--obviously in reference to the "Pennsylvania Dutch", who are really German immigrants.

Both names are pretty stupid to me. I know that "Eagles" isn't the most original name in the world, but there are a lot better names out there than "pride" or "flying dutchmen".

I liked the Flying Dutchmen moniker - very original and interesting name. Pride is just kinda dull. Speaking of changes, I'm sure the Lehigh brethen will also agree that changing from the Engineers to the Mountain Hawks was a step backward as well.

I actually think two of the most common names are Wildcats and Bulldogs - just can't get excited about those. I thought IAA suffered a big "good name" loss when Marshall (The Thundering Herd) and Idaho (the Vandals) left the ranks of the division.

I believe that will be Lions and Tigers and Bears (OH MY!).

Interestingly, the NCAA has issued a call for reply from a number of institutions whose mascots or nicknames may be offensive to Native Americans. On the list is the Tribe of W&M. Two of Virginia's tribes (Mattaponi and Pamunkey) were quoted in today's Richmond Times Dispatch as saying they have absolutely no objection to W&M being the Tribe. The spokesperson for the Mattaponi said: "It's a tribe. We root for those! I've never heard any other tribes who think it's improper. You know, sometimes these things can get a little bit ridiculous."

Hope College, a D3 school, in Holland, Michigan uses Flying Dutchmen. No one in Holland seems to mind.

We dropped Indians at the height of the "politically correct" era under pressure from faculty and other liberals. The Virginia Tribes didn't care, just like they don't care now. I'm actually glad they changed it. I like Tribe better.

You won't see a change this time. I just can't believe the NCAA is wasting peoples time to have to deal with it.

The nickname depends on it's intent. A good number of the ethnic names are not derogatory, nor intended to be, but are reflections on a geographical region or culture (Irish, Dutchmen, Illini, Seminoles,etc.) However, names that are nothing but stereotypical caricatures and worse, should be eliminated--the worst example being the Washington Redskins. That's no different than if a team were called "Wetbacks", "Darkies", "Wops" or "Kikes".
It's like the famous Supreme Court decision defining pornography, "I cannot define it , but I know it when I see it"--Justice Potter Stewart.

Yep, but it's politically correct, etc. They tried to change UMass to something generic like "grey wolves" last year. Safe for the administration, and easier to market. Several years before that there was a push to get rid of the Minuteman because a white man with a gun seemed to offend certain groups. Fortunately both failed. My favorite nic was once Nebraska Wesleyan, who used to be very appropriately named the Plainsmen, but recently got castrated to the generic Prairie Wolves. More of those offensive white men with guns, I guess. Flying Dutchmen sounds a bit Peter Pan-ish, but any kind of Dutchmen is good.

Speaking of white men with guns, I hear UT-Knoxville is dropping the use of its traditional Volunteer logo in favor of a hound dog. Still the 'Vols, just no volunteer image. This stuff's getting pretty stuipd if you ask me.

Oh, I almost forgot about this. A few years ago, PETA complained that Jax State and South Carolina should stop using "Gamecocks" because it promoted the cruel sport of cockfighting.

I worked at the campus newspaper at the time, and talked to a PETA rep about the request. I told her we'd just joined the OVC, where Murray State's Racers were almost certainly glorifying something cruel, too. She bit, and promised to give them a call.

Ever since then I've refered to the JSU-MSU game as "The Exploited Animals Bowl."

I'm sure PETA does some actual good work on behalf of animals, but I can't imagine what it might be.

It's amazing to me that with so many A-10 posters on this thread, that none of you ever did the simple thing and asked a Hofstra fan when you played them. (Though, I admit, finding a Hofstra fan at the game is nearly prohibitively difficult.) ;)
Several years ago, when they were initiating the Pride nickname, I asked one of the staff members and he told me that, in the community, their booster club "The Pride of Hofstra" was more well-known. Locally, more people associated with Hofstra athletics with the booster's activities than with the athletic teams themselves. At the time -- again, several years ago -- the plan was to move all athletic teams to using the Pride nickname. I don't know why in particular they haven't followed through on that.

The PC crowd brings this up periodically. W&M innoculated itself when they adopted Tribe back in the `70s. It came up again in the late `80s and at least once since then. As has been stated, surveys show that the local tribes don't object to the nickname.

These efforts are only successful when there is a weak-willed administration. Some PC groups kept Illinois' Chief Illiniwek from appearing at the Final Four this year but have made no headway against he professional teams who have the will and the money to fight them.

PETA made a fuss about hunting here in Montana and a local proponent plastered pictures of starving deer, elk, and antelope and then asked if keeping the population in check was inhumane!! Great response :nod:

I remember hearing some story from Scotland, I think, where PETA or some similar group was protesting the drinking of milk by schoolchildren. It was some guy yelling about how bad milk was and another guy standing there in a cow suit. Apparently the kids objected and started throwing milk cartons at the two of them. The police had to be called in order to protect the protestors.

I believe 'schuyl' means 'winding'--and the Schuylkill is a very winding river, as is the infamous highway that is affectionately referred to as the "Sure Kill Expressway"
