View Full Version : Big South - Week 3

September 8th, 2008, 12:48 AM
Schedule:

All games on Saturday, 9/13

Coastal Carolina @ Monmouth - 1:00 PM

Charleston Southern @ Miami (OH) - 3:00 PM

Liberty @ Western Carolina - 6:00 PM

Stony Brook @ Maine - 6:00 PM

Gardner-Webb @ Austin Peay - 7:00 PM

VMI @ William and Mary - 7:00 PM

Interesting...the whole conference is away this weekend. Thoughts?

My feelings are:

Monmouth over Coastal Carolina 24-20 - Sorry guys, but I do hope you prove me wrong :)
Miami (OH) over Chuck South 42-17 - Miami (OH) hasn't looked good in any of its games yet, but I can imagine they're ready to take it out on someone xspankx
Liberty over Western Carolina 21-10 - Western Carolina is Liberty's first FCS opponent this season, but it should be a memorable debut as the Flame move to 3-0
Stony Brook over Maine 24-14 - Should be a great rematch after SBU's overtime win at our homecoming last year xcoolx
Austin Peay over G-Webb 14-10 - Austin Peay might be 0-2, but that's against some very strong teams. G-Webb is 1-1, but the win was vs. a DII team and the loss wasn't very close against Tenn Tech, another Ohio Valley Conference team.
William and Mary over VMI 35-7 - W&M is no St. Francis (PA). After the frustrating loss against VMI, I really expect William and Mary to take it out on someone, and, coincidentally, the next opponent's in-state. Oy

So that would place the conference Week 3 record at 2-4. Any more optimistic guesses? The G-Webb and Coastal games I can easily see flipping.

Austin-Peay over GW by 7.
CCU rebounds by 10 over Monmouth.
Miami OH beats CSU by 4...touchdowns.
Liberty over Western by 21.
Stony Brook over Maine by 2.
W&M over VMI by 14.
Elon over Presbyterian by 10 [xoopsx] because we play defense like France in 1870 and 1940.

I'd pick:

CCU over Monmouth (if they can get over Sunday's loss mentally)
Liberty manhandles WCU (if the injuries I've read about aren't too bad)
Miami (OH) runs past Chuck South
Austin Peay over GWU (that Georgia Southern result was close)
Maine over Stony Brook
William & Mary over VMI
Elon over Presbyterian (shootout)

I'd hope that my Bulldogs can pull off what would be a mild upset in Tennessee. They did look better Saturday night that what I'd heard they looked in the opener, and Tusculum's talent level is/was comparable to a few current Big South squads. Pretty good D2 team.

Cats, no disrespect meant there.

Liberty's a top-10/20 caliber team. Their running back will go in the second/third round of the NFL draft in April, and they are very, very big and fast.

Your new era hasn't been in swing long enough to correct the errs of the previous regime.

I will believe this after they play YSU. With all due respect the schedule to this point does not support such a claim.

I'm hoping you are over estimating Liberty, and underestimating WCU.

Of course, Western has not shown anything yet for you to do otherwise....... Hopefully, there will be a surprise in store for Liberty fans this weekend.......

Maine struggled with Monmouth last week before winning 27-24. I think it will SBU 28 Maine 14. We are stronger than Monmouth and better than last years team.

With all due respect Liberty is far from a top 10/20 caliber team. Liberty has been crushed by every single top 20 1AA and 1A's teams they have played in their entire history. They have never made the playoffs. They schedule three horrible Div II schools just about every single year. What all of a sudden makes Liberty a Top 10/20 team?

Three horrible DII schools? We've never had more than two.

You don't see Liberty posters claiming top 10/20. We think we can get to that and that we can get to a playoff level team but know that right now, we have proven nothing.

However, I can tell you why people will say that about Liberty:

a) Liberty has some of the best facilities in all of FCS football. Our stadium may not be as big or as nice but I would put our Football Ops Center in the top 10 in the country.

b) We were Big South champs in very convincing fashion and missed out on the playoffs by an inch at W&M and 1 point at Toledo.

c) We have one of the top 5 running backs in FCS football this year.

d) We have one of the top 5 return specialists in the country as well.

We also think we have a shot at the playoffs because our schedule sets up extremely well for it. With the earned access rules, we can lock up an automatic at-large if we just take care of our business.

That can be said for every FCS team!!!!!!

This is big for me because I hate Liberty, but they're solid team that can throw down just as hard as any other team in I-AA. They only missed the playoffs last season because the Big South didn't have an auto bid. Once the AQ is in place, look for them to still be playing when most other teams aren't. LU has size and athleticism, and they'll show WCU just how much they've got this coming weekend.

You obviously don’t know our history. No, we haven’t beaten anyone of significance for the past 10 years, but that’s not our entire history. We’ve been ranked as high as #8 and #9 on a few different occasions. We have beaten 1A Eastern Michigan in ‘89, in ’89 we also beat James Madison and Eastern Illinois both of whom were in the top 20, in 1990 we beat #15 North Carolina A&T, in 1995 we beat #19 UCF, in 1997 we beat #15 App St and #19 Cal Poly. We then had 10 years of very little success, but we have had some good wins in our history.

I think the game against WCU will be closer than most of us LU and Big South fans think, but I think we'll still win.

CCU over Monmouth
G-Dub over APSU
Miami beats CSU (this time its the Ohio version)
Stony Brook over Maine
Elon over PC (sorry Presby, but my heart is rooting for ya'll)
W&M over VMI

9/13 IS the WCU game actually then bye week, then YSU (who will be coming off a game with NDSU and if the SDSU game is any indication, that wont be pretty)
