Doesn't your stadium hold somewhere around 17,000 - 18,000? Can you fit that many more on the grass around the field?

UND's home game against SCSU only had 9,143. Rather disappointing but there just wasn't too much excitement about this game. This weekend's game is Potato Bowl and the following home game is Homecoming followed by our first Great West home game. So I expect to see some good attendance for the rest of our games.

Youngstown @ SDSU 11,800 - 3200 below stated seating capacity. Wanted more but fans are still a bit fair weather and there was rain in the forecast and leading up to gametime. Given all that it was still an attendance record for the first game of the year.

If you want the obvious answer to that question yes. 30,718-20,500=10,218 extra people that didn't have permanent seats.xthumbsupx If you wondering if this attendance count is legit, it is. It was announced at the game, then it says that same number on ESPN and on App's website.

It also rained throughout the game, not long at all but it wasn't the best weather.

ASU takes counts tickets through the use of electronic ticket scanning machines. Prior to the addition of the 4,400 additional seats on the east side KBS had 16,500 permanent seats and had a crowd of 28,800 last year. I assume the new capacity with the hill would be 33,200.

People used to sit in the trees and up on the hill behind the walkway that they knocked down for the new deck, so I'd subtract a little bit from the 33,200.

IndianaAppMan

if app expanded to a 40k capacity do you think it could be filled?

No. First of all, a 40,000-seat stadium does not make sense at the FCS level (outside of classic old stadiums like the Yale Bowl). 40,000 at a non-Ivy Leage, non-HBCU Classic game at the FCS level is plain unrealistic, especially if it's expected during a non-defending championship year. If those numbers were to happen, then in my book, the time has come for going FBS. But again, I can't see 40,000 at an ASU game happening.

I hate to say this, but attendance will drop at least somewhat when we're no longer winning the national titles every year, and especially when we start 2-3 or 3-5. Some people will start staying at home more often and watch on streaming. With the exception of the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Browns, fan attendance is fickle when the team's not winning. I hope Appalachian Nation proves me wrong.

That's okay, though--I think most people will want to continue coming back to games. It'll stay in the 25,000-range as long as the winning seasons keep coming. Most fans won't quickly forgt this great run we've had.

Great pic. From 3A (App side), the hill looked fuller than that picture shows. You've definitely got a better angle than I had. Can't wait to see what it looks like for parent's weekend in a few weeks.

The one very slight disappointment for me was the number of empty parking spaces in the stadium lot. We were packing up our tailgate early to get into the stadium and still had empty spots on either side of us. I'm hoping the activity picks up with better football weather and tougher games.

State side stands looked awesome from App side.

The only FCS discussions are on message boards or, as Coach Moore says, "coffee shop talk." The AD and the chancellor have not publicly discussed it, and until/unless they do, it will remain message board talk only.

So the only plans that can be confirmed is that App is staying FCS for as long as anyone can foresee. The way things have gone the past few years, that may not be a great thing for the rest of the FCS. ;)

ERASU2113
September 7th, 2008, 09:55 PM
IMO: If ASU moved attendance would drop. Not many fans would want to see the team struggle and get beat every week. I mean would you want to see App get beat by 15-20+ a few couple of years and see our season end in November? Not to mention seeing GSU or another SoCon team contine to play?

I sure wouldn't. I'm perfectly happy seeing App in the FCS.

Once the success ends - and the natonal titles stop coming...the talks will stop.

I thought it was a nice attendance considering the weather on Saturday morning especially coming from the Richmond area.

I would love to see the crowd actually stay at the game regardless of the score....maybe I'm asking too much.

It's tough when you are up 35-0 at halftime. I've never left a JMU game early and did for the first time (after the 3Q) because none of my friends wanted to stay and see us whoop up on them with our 2nd stringers for a quarter...

If we were blowing out a formidable opponent...or it was a rivalry game...people would stay...but not with NCCU

Yes, it was much more packed during the 1st half, I basically took the pics for my boss to see the press box being built (I work for WFU and she's a big Wake fan and wanted to compare the press box towers, as they are a little similar).

But we could have easily put another 2-3k in the stadium, plenty of empty seats and the hill wasn't as packed as it was last year at the 28,800k game.

We haven't had a terrible start in a while, but my senior year (2003), we opened 0-2. We won all our home games but lost all our road games. Attendance was still pretty good by most FCS standards, about 14K I believe, but it was a few thousand under capacity. These days, we're over capacity by 10,000-plus. Until we drop off a bit and miss the playoffs or something, we don't know whether we'll still be seeing these eye-popping numbers. I don't look forward to that, but NO ONE stays on top forever.

Sorry AGSers. Not trying to hijack the thread.

What I think we're seeing is a renaissance of tailgating and game day atmosphere in Boone. Driving up to see the Mountaineers play on Saturday has turned into an event. It's beyond worrying about records, opponents and conferences. xnodx

Would I expect attendance to drop off when the championship streak comes to an end? Sure. But I don't think it'll be my much. And like you said, the Apps haven't had a losing season since 1993.

I guess but I would still like to see us dig down remover the track and put seats in on the hill, although I think I am one of the few. The biggest advantage I see to having grass hills is in a non sellout game it still looks nice and not empty. All in all I still think that Montana has the nicest stadium in FCS followed closely by Appalachian. Perhaps next year when the boxes are finished I will change my opinion.

I noticed a lot of empty seats in the stadium. On my row,,there were 5 or 6 vacant seats from me to the end of the row. I think we could have easily set an even higher attendance mark,,and think we will later in the season. People had heard there would be complete grid-lock in Boone if we went over 30k. It was a rainy day,,,we had lost to LSU so some of the bandwagoners did not come,,,we were not playing a major or even local opponent like last year agains LR. I am sure there are lots of excuses, but I did see lots of emply seats. Here is a shot from the east side lower level of the band. Great day for ASU.

do they count tickets sold or people through the gates bc they sold every seat but there were empty ones... so if they count only the ones that come through the gates it could go a lot higher...
also homecoming and black saturday and halloween night are going to be absolutely sick at kbs... jam packed... i cant wait...
They count people at the gates. Otherwise the students wouldn't be counted accurately.

Homecoming will be packed, but Halloween is the one I look forward to.
