Based on their respective performances this week, I think this matchup will be one of the best of the season. Convincing wins this week coming off disappointing 1-A losses last week - should be fun.

Huh? JMU beat a first year FCS team that has aspirations to one day be good enough to be a MEAC team and Appy St beat the Jacksonville that doesn't give out schollies. I don't think today's games have any indication of how good either team is.

For the short term, having a week off might be a tiny advantage, but it's not as though, after two weeks, there's a huge need to nurse injuries and rest. In the long run, it is too bad that ASU's week off isn't in October or early November.
If ASU is fortunate enough to make it to Chattanooga in December, they'll play 14 games in a row.

Definitely tough, especially with only 11 games. But I still think the top 3 are 3 SDSU - 8 tough games, 1 more than most tough schedules
2 UD - MD, Furman, JMU, UMass, UR all away
1 The Citadel - Florida, Clemson, @ ASU and with a Div II - Very tough road to the playoffs

I think UD's is the worst. Realistically, any team in the MVFC, CAA, or SoCon has a tough schedule, but all of their realy tough ones are on the road.

If we had a lot of injuries to heal, it would. But we don't unless practice weeks create some.
With most of the key players getting little playing time vs non-scholly Jax, we will certainly be rusty after a lay-off.

It's not really an excuse as we got beat fair and square by GS. However, a rusty AE (sort of like how he's play so far this year) coupled with a week off didn't do us any favors against a charged up Eagles team.
AE's first pass was an interception for a TD. We never got the ball rolling until the fourth quarter. By then it was too late.
We're not gonna have that luxury playing in a hostile stadium in Harrisonburg.
Coupled with the semi-weak play I've seen so far from the offense and giving the Dukes the advantage of home field; I see them taking this game. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

One thing will be different, JMU will come in to the game knowing what they have in the tank after playing UMASS. App State on the other hand will go in without having played a game against "reasonable" competition.
I'm not sure if I learned enough from the first two games to form an opinion as to how we will measure up. We will certainly know more about JMU than we will ASU at game time. I'm excited to see how it turns out.
I'm pulling for JMU to have an injury free win over UMASS so we have a real measuring stick against real competition. xhypedx

If App wins, we'll be a hundred-times more confidant in our football team, cite examples of how great we were in the game and the rest of AGS will be even more sick of us. On the other foot, more JMU fans will get in the "Fire Mickey Matthews" bandwagon and they'll be emotionally crushed and break down the game to show why MM is unfit to be their football coach.
If JMU wins, they'll praise MM and give examples on why he's their most successive coach ever and how it'll carry over into the grind of CAA play. App fans will question our team just a bit more but for the most part still keep faith in our team as long as we're not blown out or dominated.
So in short, nope. Just for two weeks until we play more games to dissect, complain, praise and lament about. xrulesx

I went to the game and I'd have to say that, if it's possible to have an unimpressive 56-7 victory, we did it.
We had some fine moments, don't get me wrong. But I was surprised how much our offense fell off without Armanti in there. I thought we'd be able to do more with Pressley playing.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned that even more of our success is riding on Armanti this year. We don't seem to have quite as many weapons to keep teams from game-planning to stop him (Welton being the possible exception).

Time to take off the black and gold colored glasses. Our offense has been suspect at best while the defense has shown a few flashes of brilliance. Whipping up on non-scholarship Jacksonville really doesn't tell us much, especially taking into account the ineptness of the passing game.
We've turned in two fairly mediocre games to open the season. If we show up and play like that in Harrisonburg, JMU is gonna hand us our butts.

dam guys,
reading all this doom and gloom about Apps chances against James Madison makes me wonder why are we even playing the game, lets just go ahead and give James Madison the victory and save us the trip. Seriously, I think we will be fine, we still have the best player in the FCS, we still have the best overall talent, and we still have the best coaching staff. Do not forget, AE always saves his best for the biggest games. I believe the passing game will come around this week, and I believe that we will surprise James Madison with our much improved defensive line. I also believe that our players are tired of hearing about how we are no longer the best team in the country, and that we will not defend our title in Chatt this year. We have something to prove to the country, THAT THE TITLE STLL COMES THRU BOONE. I have a gut feellng that Moore will have the team ready for this game, and we will win this game easily.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Our run D is much better this year and that's the reason it was close last year was because we never had our O on the field. I see us shutting down their "clock eating" strategy of last year. So that will make it interesting, its hard to say how it will turn out depending on JMU's approach.

The entire first half saw them all huddling around themselves in the middle of the field trying to find the ball while Landers & Co. frolicked to outside. UMass D is flat out awful...they need to do some fixin' in the next few weeks. Appy won't let JMU get outside as much and I’m not convinced JMU can still pound teams in the middle.
On the other side of the ball, JMU's D has a remarkable resemblance to Swiss cheese. You'd think the parents of the LBs would be concerned that their sons disappeared during the game. It was like watching some sci-fi show; the JMU LBs were there at the start of almost every play and then suddenly, POOF (must have something to do with the purple), they were gone. I thought pictures on milk cartons might have been in order.
Although I’m rooting for JMU (that is really hard to type), Appy wins...Mickey blames the planets.

JMU fans, I need some advice. I'm looking at doing some hiking on Saturday before tailgating time. Would you advise going over to Shenendoah N.P., or is there someplace else close that might be less crowded?
SNP is the best bet. Shouldn't be too crowded. Best hiking in the central section(between Swift Run Gap entrance @ US-33 and Thorton Gap @ US211) but using the Southern section will be less out of your way

Weather forecast is for mid 70's during the day(about 10 degrees less in SNP) At kickoff - probably in the 60's. Partly cloudy. With the Field Turf
it should be a fast field - No excuses for anybody.

I'm glad to see that both AD's are negotiating a 4- to 6-game series against each other. Besides maybe Montana, which would require too high travel costs on a 1AA budget for a long-term series, JMU would be the best team for App to have as a long-term OOC rival. I can't imagine many JMU fans disputing that, either, especially when you hear their thirst for revenge.

Too lazy to look it up myself, how was the Umass run defense prior to the JMU game last week. They obviously got lit up on the ground by the Duke's backs and RL. I know they are supposed to have an NFL caliber CB, but I really don't know anything about the Umass front seven. Was it a great game by the Dukes against a great defense, or was the failure of the Minutemen defense suspect to begin with?
Both App and JMU relied heavily on their ground games for their last wins, but it might come down to who can move it through the air more effectively.

Suspect to begin with IMO, but they returned on 8 on D from an extremely stout defense last year. Go figure.
To me, UMass JMU was a battle of size vs. speed in the trenches (both backfields are pretty fast). Speed won.
ASU will match up quite differently, yet I think we'll still be able to get plenty of big runs. JMU will probably throw a little more - a safe assumption since they could hardly throw less last week - based on the relatively young ASU secondary. Secondary is UMass' strength and JMU avoided it completely.

I think you'll probably get different answers from each fan base, but the truth is somewhere in the middle. JMU has a good rushing attack and UMass had bad run defense. Landers threw the ball well when he had to.
I'm pretty sure that App has a better run defense than UMass, but I'm also pretty sure that App doesn't present the aerial threat that UMass did.

This is a completely honest question for JMU fans...Do you think you will be able to stay in this game if you get behind? It seems to me that Landers is really only throwing 5-8 passes a game this year. That's great if you can run all day and keep the lead, but if you fall behind, you will look pretty one-dimensional, no?

Nice loaded question, EL. The answer is yes. Rodney has the ability to throw the ball, the plays have been called to toss, however, he runs when he sees wide holes for first downs. Who can blame him?, if he has an opening he's going to take it. By the way, we understand, you don't like JMU, stop...xdeadhorsex.

i have a feeling micky didnt want to show to much against Mass unless he had to. i have a feeling he is going to mix it up a little to throw ASU off there game plan. Expect to see alot of runs as usual. But im looking for landers to have around 15 pass attempts. JMU threw 11 times vs Duke and 13 vs NCCU. Take out the spikes against UMass, and there was 6 passes there. Thats an avg of 10 passes a game, not 5-8.
Last year JMU ran 84 plays, 67 rushing, 17 passing to only 57 plays for ASU, for a total of 141 offensive plays for both teams. With the new rules and JMU being very heavy run oriented and ASU being more run oriented than the avg team, that means less passing, less clock stoppages, and less plays. Each team might get the ball only 65 or so plays. I think JMU will end up passing on about 10-12 of these plays if the game is close or they are ahead for much of it. About what they usually do, maybe slightly more. For JMU to pass much more, like close to or around 20x, they would have to A, have the ball for 80+ plays again (don't see that happening) or would have to fall behind by several TDs early, and maybe 3-4 TDs by the 2nd half (again, don't see that happening).

The main concerns for JMU fans are the turnovers. Most teams probably feel that way, but seriously that has been JMU's crutch in getting over the hump since 2004.
About 20% of the plays will be passes, on par with what JMU always does.
However, there may be a few new wrinkles in "trick" plays. I think there may be 3-4 plays like that.
If JMU falls behind early, it doesn't look good, but all is not lost. I really don't think there is a better front defensive line that JMU will face this year than Duke. It sounds really funny saying it, but it is true. They have an incredible DT that is likely to be a top 10 pick in the NFL draft next April.
Two observations about the JMU defense:
1) They are not getting the kind of pressure I would like to see, but the team has only been rushing the front four so far. There are blitz packages that have not been used yet.
2) They are creating turnovers. For all the complaints about turnovers, they can be negated by creating turnovers. JMU's turnover margin is getting better I think. S Haywood and DB McCullough are threats in the secondary.
If we fall behind (14+), it will take turnovers to get back into the game. App St. is too prolific on offense. I think JMU can hold its own if it gets a big lead (14+).
Something else to consider: UMass relies heavily on its secondary, so why pass? App St. has a little more traditional defense with some youth in the secondary. You will see more than 6 pass attempts for sure on Saturday, but still for no more than 20-25% of the plays.

I've only seen the LSU game, and I've read from other posters that our drubbing of Jacksonville was a bit underwhelming. Armanti seemed off in LSU, but I guess that's understandable given it's the first game and you've got 91,000 people screaming at you. I think he'll get it reeled in for JMU and show us the stuff we're used to. We have some youth on the field and some gaps in the secondary, but I truly believe this will become a shootout between Landers and Edwards. Both are dual threat QB's, with AE being a bit more nimble and RL more of a freight train. It's too close for me to call objectively, but I have to go with my boys and a 4 point ASU win.
Here's to a good game with no injuries and hopefully we'll meet again in November/December.xthumbsupx

Only App St. is the only FCS school to beat JMU by more than a TD since 2004, and that was 21-10 App St. down in Boone in 2006. I don't expect JMU to lose by more than a TD at home this weekend, but recent history is not so kind to JMU. Playing at home helps though - most of those close games were away. I've only seen the LSU game, and I've read from other posters that our drubbing of Jacksonville was a bit underwhelming. Armanti seemed off in LSU, but I guess that's understandable given it's the first game and you've got 91,000 people screaming at you.
Well, I think them LSU players had something to do with it. It did not appear to me that the 86k tiger faithful had much to do with the outcome.
From what I saw, LSU could beat half the NFL.
On the other side of the spectrum, don't let the JaxU game fool you. Coach Moore called off the dogs early & lots of players got some time.
As for JMU, I predict an ASU victory.

I didn't mean to imply that we were beaten by the fans. LSU is all that and then some...
Armanti just seemed rattled. Most of the comments I've read on the game blamed it on the recievers (some of it rightly so), but I saw him overthrowing or leading passers most of the day. To your point, the thought of having a 315 lb guy who runs the 40 faster than you could impact your decision making ability somewhat....

It's too hard to get a read on the ASU defense from either game up to this point. LSU will make a lot of schools look bad this year, I'm not going to fret over it. As for the Jacksonville game, at any given point, there were 1st, 2nd, and 3rd string players all on the field at once. There was no "unit", but there was some confusion. The corners didn't always know when they had safety help, and that dictated their coverage. Plus, the LB corp only played about 1.5 qtrs. Lots of good playing time for younger guys.
ASU wins by 2 possessions. xthumbsupx

I think I agree with you here. I also think App's biggest asset tomorrow is our improved defense. We will have less experienced DBs than we are used to, but our front 4 will hold their own & our LBs ought to have a field day.
Can we just kickoff early?

Uh, ASU scored less than 30 vs JMU last season. 28 to be exact. Problem for JMU is they only scored 27.xbawlingx
I do think the 2 teams will combine for around 60-70 points. Not quite 80-90 like some predict.

Speaking of which, a reader named Hugh politely scolded us for an early-week item that referred to ASU as “Appy State.”
“It’s Appalachian State or App... not Appy,” he said, and since his address ended in appstate.edu, we offer sincere apologies, tempered with the fervent hope that JMU makes his life miserable Saturday night.xmadx

So App St isn't even a test for JMU?? You're the only one I've heard with THAT opinion.
I will admit to feeling JMU has some significant intangibles in their favor for this game, the most important two being home field and emotion (or revenge ... hunger... whatever you want to call it.)
And I am interested to see how we try to contain their running game. They were very impressive in Boone, save for the three inexcusable errors at the end (4th down, not kicking the FG, and then fumbling.)
I remember leaving the stadium feeling very bad for the JMU team and fans.

I agree I did feel very sorry for the players (especially the running back), but I did feel very happy that we continued our journey to the 3rd national title.

both teams scored less than 30 last year when they played each xrolleyesx xreadx
and with the emotion going into this game and the lack of a passing game for jmu (ball control offense though) i dont see many points being scored. ASU has a quick strike O, and a good d....JMU lost some good leader ship like app did in their secondary which will hurt them more than it hurts app. but why i said there wont be many points scored goes to the fact that apps receivers have hands like galvanized steel & JMU doesnt move the ball down the feild fast enough against good D....and yes that means UMass had crappy D. Gotta love gameday! I've been waiting for this one for quite a while. App St.fans- hope you have a safe trip and hope you don't encounter any a-hole fans.
Weather is looking perfect for a night game against two very good teams. I have a lot of respect for your team down there in Boone, but I think JMU at home combined with a very hungry team after last year will win this one. I can't see us winning with a full out ground attack this one against a strong App rushing D. I think you'll see us air it out a bit more than you've seen this year, but only time will tell. I do know that if we can't get it done on the ground, it's gonna be a long night for JMU.
I predict JMU gets it done and wins by a TD with a score around the 30's.
Hoping for a great game with a JMU win!

To be honest, I think the JMU fans and players psyched themselves out about this game. JMHO.

LOL
And people said ASU didn't deserve the #1 ranking.
Unless JMU actually is that bad, which I doubt.

When ASU is on their game,I doubt very much that there is any team on the 1-AA level that can beat them.I hadn't seen them previously this year, but one half is enough. They have an excellent combination of speed and skill,as well as an aggressive style of play that is impressive.I'm sold. xbowx
