What looks bad about it... pass D or run D or both. Until our fumble at the 19 we moved the ball well on them... could be a shoot out but this game i do not like

No kidding. If HC can put put up 42 on us, TT should put up about 200.
Boatload of stupid penalties, too (what else is new). At least Coen and the offense looked great. If nothing else, should mean a lot of high-scoring shootouts this year. I guess we'll know after the JMU game whether or not this team is truly capable of contending for the NC. But with how the defense looked today, I'm not getting my hopes up.

Holy Cross is going to put a ton of points up this year so i really wouldn't worry too much if i was a UMASS fan.
Well, it's definitely not to take anything away from Holy Cross; that's the best Patriot League offense I've seen UMass face, and I have no doubt they'll put up points all season. But still, this was not the UMass defense we've been used to the last few years.
Anyway, this was a fun, exciting game to watch. Can't complain on that count, at least.

It wasn't just that they were scoring, they were making it look easy. The only times we stopped them were when we got to the QB. On their final scoring drive we tried to mix it up by dropping 8 into coverage, and guys were still wide open. We have issues. Hopefully JMU will run the ball so much against NCC that they still won't have their passing game sorted when they play us. These purple teams are making us look bad.

Sounds like it was a good game. Props to HC, I didn't think they'd keep it as close. Should be interesting in the PL this year!

i mean absolutely no disrespect to Umass because i know they are very good but why do they struggle so much against the patriot league teams?

I'll wait to see what happenms out west...but he's got to be in the running...
Coen is definately on track for an outstanding senior year...and the "O" line, although inexperienced as a unit, has really done a great job protecting him and opening holes for Tony Nelson...
And all the pre-season talk about how the secondary was top flight...they haven't shown it yet...

A few years ago Don Brown said that someone he trusts told him to drive to Beverly to see this kid kick. He did, for a wet and windy practice day. The kid was quite small, but was kicking them through from the hash marks at long distance even with the conditions. I guess the drive paid off again.
For those with short memories, Armando did the same before:

Not surprised by the score or the closeness. HC is a very good team. The top tier teams in the PL can play with the CAA teams. Lafayette gave UMass a very good game a couple years back, and Lehigh has been very competitive with Villanova, Delaware and James Madison over the past few years. HC has one of the best QB's in the country and an excellent coach.

Its Browns D style not the DBs that is the problem. They are shutting down the deepball but giving the short passes. Both Albany and Holy Cross took advantage.

Because PL football is a good football league. The top 2 or 3 teams in the league can be competitive with anyone in the country. Also, where's carney2? I thought he was saying this one dimensional team couldn't compete with UMASS.

Congrats to UMass on the win.
JMU went 15 for 19, 173 yds passing, TD, no INT against against NCCU. But then again, it was NCCU. Went for only one long ball the whole game. Was on the 1st JMU offensive play. Landers barely overthrew JMU's slowest (or least fastest) receiver (of the ones on the 2 deep) who did have his man beat. Most of the passing was mostly just the short underneath stuff and let the athletes get the yards after catch.
JMU Rushed for 276, 6 TDS on 38 carries. 3 backs 69-89 yds, Holloman most with 14 carries, 89 yds. Landers only rushed 3 times for 31. Looks like Matthews didn't want him carrying much his game.
Only 57 offensive plays (NCCU actually had 64). Think the new clock rules are cutting down on the # of plays.
JMU did return a punt for a TD (Scotty McGee). After that NCCU looked like they didn't want to kick off to him (I'm sure they saw film of his 5 ko retuns for 157 yds vs Duke and they probably knew of his 2 ko returns for TDs last 2 seasons).
Coen sounded awesome. JMU's secondary is pretty decent. Hopefully for JMU can they bring enough heat with the DL. Think we're going see a lot of points scored. Should be good game next week.

What a great game to watch. It's interesting to see that the offense is pulling the team through the first two games. Shows what a veteran QB can mean to a team as they were the unit that lost the majority of it's players.
Many UMass faithful often criticize the offense and the play calling, which is ironic since they are performing very well and winning the game for UMasss. I have faith Coach Brown with fix the defense or else we are in trouble starting next Saturday.

Can't criticize the offense this year...the line is protecting Liam and opening holes for Tony...Horne, Cruz and company are catching and running...
It's the "D" that Coach Brown and the fans are worried about...between less than stellar play and penalties...xnonono2xxnonono2x
Its going to be a tough week in practice.....

i agree the top PL teams can compete with anyone in the fcs just ask 2003 Colgate. but Umass has had a tough time with PL teams the were having off seasons in the past. in fact i belive colgate beat them a couple of years ago and they finished near the bottom of the PL and Umass i thought was pretty good that year i mite be wrong though.
