Hopefully this model is correct and it comes on land as a cat 1 on Friday and is gone by Saturday.

If not, GSU might be playing host to Hugo Bowl part two...

This model actually shows a Category 2 Hurricane (the color is changed to orange on the map)

Three just off the coast of Africa so it'll be a busy month.

What is the deal with "Hugo Bowl" anyway? Hugo is the only Hurricane to ever effect me in my life as I have always lived in the Charlotte "area." I was 8 or 9 years old.

Educate me. What happend at GSU?

Thursday night game on ESPN in Statesboro against Middle Tn. State. Played in the weather from Hurricane Hugo. I was not there but have heard many stories about how bad the conditions were that night. I think it is safe to say that that game would not be played in todays world.

I've got the video of the game on VHS, CRAZY downpour, GSU's Erk blanked their huge rival Middle Tenn. State and ran all over them with the option. The first game to be nationally televised (I think) on ESPN and the first night game for GSU. Awesome event! (I was not there)

We beat Navy in Annapolis that same weekend.

Since Hugo came ashore directly over Charleston, our stadium was trashed. We played the next few games away, but we played WCU in Williams Brice Stadium. That game was a tie.

We came on so strong early in the season, but then having to live in hotels away from Charleston the whole fall took its toll on the team and I think we dropped something like 4 or 5 straight after the storm.

That sure seems like something you would remember for the rest of your life.

And to think some people wanted to cancel the ASU-LSU game on Saturday...because of a Category 2 storm that was three days away.

To be fair, Louisiana is more prone to catastrophic damage than Georgia/South Carolina lowlands and after not doing enough for Katrina, do you blame them? It might have been excessive for the rest of us, but better safe than sorry. xthumbsupx

Hugo was the most destructive storm in history at the time. $10 billion in damage, and devastating to the Carolinas. Savannah, GA was evacuated in advance of the storm. 20' storm surge hit the South Carolina Coast just north of Charleston. Ocean Blvd. in Murrells Inlet had four feet of sand on it after the storm. Hurricane spawned 3,000 tornados as it came ashore. 35 people died.

Many people stayed in Savannah, though not necessarily wanting to. My wife and I couldn't get our parents (mine in their 70's and hers in their 60's at the time) to leave, and we weren't leaving without them. Turned out okay, we even watched the Hugo Bowl on TV while amazed that we still had electricity, but I won't ever stay again if such a storm is predicted to land anywhere near here. I just hope that the changes that have been made since Hurricane Floyd to improve the flow for an evacuation will actually work.
