Richmond QB Ward Heads Up Players Of The Week
Philadelphia (Sports Network) - Richmond quarterback Eric Ward, North Dakota State wide receiver Kole Heckendorf, Western Illinois linebacker Jason Williams
and Southern Utah punter Trevor Ward have been named The Sports Network's FCS national players of the week.
OFFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Eric Ward, Richmond 6-3, 209, Junior, Quarterback, Atlanta, GA.
Ward was named co-offensive player of the week with Heckendorf after throwing for a career-high 236 yards and two touchdowns in No. 4 Richmond's 28-10 victory over No. 15 Elon on Saturday night. Ward was 17-of-22 passing with no interceptions and had a passing efficiency rating of 197.4.
Ward threw a pair of touchdown passes, a career-long 80-yarder to Kevin Grayson in the first quarter and a 12-yard scoring strike to Joe Stewart in the fourth quarter. He engineered two long scoring drives of 15 plays for 90 yards and 12 plays for 73 yards and rushed 14 times for 59 yards.
Kole Heckendorf, North Dakota State 6-2, 188, Senior, Wide Receiver, Mosinee, WI.
Heckendorf caught eight passes for a career-high 179 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-6 win over Austin Peay on Thursday night. The eight receptions matched a career best.
Heckendorf has caught at least one pass in 26 straight games and in 33 of the 34 games in his career. Heckendorf hauled in touchdown passes of five, 43 and 69 yards from quarterback Nick Mertens, who was making his first collegiate start.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jason Williams, Western Illinois, 6-3, 235, Senior, Linebacker, Chicago, IL.
Williams forced two fumbles, had two sacks for 14 yards in losses, seven tackles and a pass breakup in Western Illinois' near upset of Arkansas on Saturday night. Williams forced a fumble on the opening kickoff that was recovered by teammate Robert Hodges at the Razorback 15-yard line.
Williams, who was named to the Buck Buchanan Award watch list last week, forced another fumble late in the third quarter that Hodges recovered at the Arkansas 35 to set up a touchdown that gave the Leathernecks a 24-14 lead with 10:34 remaining. Arkansas came back to win 28-24 with two late touchdowns.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Trevor Ward, Southern Utah, 6-5, 200, Junior, Punter, Ogden, UT.
Ward had a record-breaking day as a punter in Southern Utah's 41-7 loss to Air Force on Saturday. Ward averaged 53.6 yards on eight kicks, had two downed inside the 20-yard line and bombed a school-record 91 yard punt for the Thunderbirds.
