NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball reversed its long-standing opposition to instant replay and will allow umpires to check video on home run calls in series that start Thursday, a person familiar with the announcement told The Associated Press.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement was authorized before commissioner Bud Selig made the announcement at 5 p.m. Tuesday EDT.

I don't like this move. You know it won't stop at just home runs. Next, they'll start using replay to check baserunning, and then it will inevitably lead to challenging balls and strikes.
This is a bad road to start going down.

I don't mind the replay, but there's no good reason at all for them to be implementing this in the middle of the season
You're changing the rules of the game as you go along, not good xnonox

Exactly, why couldn't they wait until next season to start?

I think replays time has come. Just don't go crazy with it.

The rules aren't changing, they're just making sure they get the calls right. Would you really prefer 10 minutes of managers arguing and umpires huddling as opposed to just running over to a monitor to see what actually happened? This is a no brainer, they got it in ASAP just as they should have.

But why should a home run be called differently in September than it was in May or June?
I'm on board with the idea of replay, but I really think this is unnecessarily rushing this plan through and will have an actual effect on the way the game is played for the remainder of the season. It really is a rule change, especially now if balls that were called home runs in June are now being called doubles or fouls or what have you here in September and October
Plus, dry-running this kind of technology in the midst of a pennant race seems like a disaster in the making. MLB should try and get the minors to test it during their playoffs if it's so imperitive this gets implemented

They're not being called differently. That would be the case if they said the foul pole was now in foul territory instead of fair. Up to this point in the season the goal was to make the correct call, and that's not changing. But with umpires 200+ feet from a 3 inch ball, that's not always going to happen. Now they can go see it so they ACTUALLY make the right call instead of guessing.
I would agree with you that rushing to implement it could be a problem if it was a more complicated system than it is, but it's the crew chief deciding they don't know, walking over to a tv and picking up a phone, and coming back with the correct call. I'm sure they will find a way to muck it up, but it sure seems like that would be pretty hard to do.
Again, it's not that calls are being made differently, especially because the cases where this would be used are usually pretty quirky and not likely to happen the same way twice.

Very simple answer: You change it because you get the calls RIGHT.

Which is why I've always advocated 6 umpires a game, every game, like in the playoffs. Not that they'd always get it right even then (see: Jeffrey Maier) but they would get it right the first time a lot more often...

Still gets me mad all these years later.
They aren't changing the rules, just adding a way to assist enforcing them properly.
