View Full Version : Could an undefeated USC team be left out?

BCS rankings are in, and Texas has moved ahead of USC. Virgina Tech lost a little ground, but looking at the remaining schedules, you have to wonder if the computer polls will knock USC out of the Rose Bowl this year.
Virginia Tech has #13 Boston College (#14 BCS), #6 Miami (#7 BCS), Virginia, North Carolina, and the ACC Championship game left (probably against #10 Florida State). Having 3 games left against top 15 BCS games will certainly move Virgina Tech up in the computer rankings if they run the table.
USC, meanwhile has games against Washington State, Stanford, #24 Cal (#23 BCS), #22 Fresno State, and #8 UCLA (#6 BCS). Only 1 top 15 game. Cal has a tough game this weekend at Oregon that will probably drop them out of the top 25, and Fresno State has games at Hawaii and at Boise before USC. It is very likely that by the end of the season Oregon, Hawaii and Notre Dame will be the only teams left tanked that USC has played.
Will this difference in SOS be enough to push Virgina Tech ahead of USC? If USC gets left out will it be the final nail in the BCS system.
Let's all pray it works out this way, and the sham that is the BCS will finally die.

Wouldn't that be something!? Somehow I think someone would push a button somewhere and get USC in to avoid the total meltdown of the BCS.

Virginia Tech has... Virginia
Moot point as the Hokies get their hats handed to them in C'ville this year! :D

I just love the extra irony of USC being left out of the N.C. game in the Rose Bowl. Imagine the situation this would put the people in LA, welcoming the Virgina Tech people who just took a spot from hometown USC, while USC has to travel to the Sugar Bowl in Atlanta. It would be perfect.

From what they were saying on ESPN last night, it sounds like with the SOS USC will move back in front of Texas well before the end of the season (barring a loss to Cal...which would be like Christmas-come-early for ASU Kep). The interesting scenario is if VT goes undefeated the rest of the way with their incredibly tough SOS, they will almost surely eclipse Texas and play USC in the Rose Bowl. Granted, I don't know quite (or nearly) enough about how the rankings to know that for sure, but the ESPN guys were talking about it as a certainty. Yet another reason I-AA is superior to our I-A counterparts.
Then there's always UGA...

If Mack Brown gets left out of the Rose Bowl, that will be karma catching up to him for what he did last season. If we have to put up with the BCS then it would be nice to see interesting stuff like that happen.

It would never happen because USC would continue to be #1 in the human polls and Tech would not be able to rise above #3. Even if they managed to come up with a slight advantage in the computer polls, it would not be enough to overcome.

Was it 2002 or 2003 when USC was atop both of the human polls, but was left out of the title game. When it comes to the BSC you never know who will be there until kickoff.

The only way USC doesn't play in the Rose Bowl is if they lose. No way does a team that (by that time) wins 34 straight games, 2 straight National Championships, plays in a pretty decent conference, has 2 Heisman trophy candidates and quite possibly 3 of the top 5 2006 NFL draft picks not make it.
But then again, the BCS could figure out a way to make that happen.

That was a unique situation with 3 1-loss teams. If you remember, Oklahoma was #1 and undefeated and had such a big lead in the BCS standings that everyone knew even if they lost to Kansas State, they would still play in the BCS championship game.
If both Va Tech and USC go undefeated, I don't think the Hokies can get enough of an advantage in the computers to overcome being #3 in the human polls.

If last year's Auburn team can be left out any team can be. Very rare for a team to have 4 players selected in the 1st round in one year.

You would think that USC's cheerleaders would be much hotter than that.

I don't agree. I'm not sure either could beat Va Tech, Georgia, or Alabama.

It should be VA Tech and USC. Texas has a weak schedule, due to a very WEAK Big XII. That plus a weak OOC didn't help either (minus Ohio State). If Va Tech wins out they should definately be in the title game, just for the sole fact of their SOS. I would love nothing more than a Texas State I-AA NC and Texas getting screwed out of the BCS Championship. That would make my day. :)

Did u say Ugay? You realize USC dropped 70 on them and Ugay won by 3. The SEC is probably the weakest division in 1A besides the Sunbelt and Big East.

What did he do last season to warrant that? If Texas runs the table, they will be going to the Rose Bowl.
