One week til game-time... :)
From the ECU head coach...
“All of our conference teams are doing it,” Nichols said of the practice of stepping out of NCAA Division II for a guaranteed payday on the road against an opponent from a division farther up the ladder. “I have no desire to play them, but it’s a budget thing.
“They’re going to be a tough team,” he added. “It’s hard to start off like that, but it’s something we need to do financially.”

ECO working on strength and conditioning, working to prepare for the heat they expect in Huntsville...
“It’s going to be a lot hotter down in Huntsville, Texas (where Sam Houston State is located) than it is in Ada, Okla, but Coach Reust is working us hard,” Chad Roark said. “We’ll be ready.”

You would like to think so. The SLC should have no bumps in the road outside of McNeese's trip to UNC -- have our annual weekly prediction thread elsewhere.
SHSU has had trouble with sub-Div I teams as recently as last year against Angelo State (too close for comfort) and a few years back when Todd Whitten led Tarleton State to a win in a very rainy Thursday night against the Kats...

Why is this game on a Thursday night? It's the first game of the season so won't a Thursday night game hurt tailgating and attendance?

Labor Day weekend this weekend. Students will flock home in droves.
SHSU typically schedules their first game against a sub-Div I foe on the Thursday before Labor Day. Also, it gives a few extra days for the coaches to figure out things before hitting the field again for the first real game.
Makes sense to me...

TT is correct, SHSU always schedules the first game of the season on a Thursday. SHSU is a huge suitcase college because most students homes are less than an hour away. The attendance will be bad enough for a sub DI team, even worse if played on a Saturday.

Thursday night games are gold for UCA. The frats and sororities typically make that their big "party" night because most students go home for the weekend. Plus most football fans don't mind a Thursday game because if it wears you out you only have Friday to make it through til the weekend. Proof: Henderson State will be a sellout on Thursday..Saturday...probably not. xlolx SHSU- will never be a sell-out...they just aren't that big of an opponent...xwhistlex xwhistlex xwhistlex xlolx

All I can say is that I warned the Bobcat faithful to not take ACU lightly. After that game, all I could hope was that Tarleton would show some kind of redemption, but they didn't and we lost a 70-63 shootout. Both of my teams lost to ACU.
But both of my teams beat SFA. So that counts for something... well not really.

ACU would have beaten every team in the SLC last year...except for McNeese and UCA.
Hell, replace EWU with ACU in the playoffs last year, and they could have beaten the injury plagued McNeese also.
The only reason UCA would win is because they could score more than ACU.

He's got a perfectly good explanation for it (or shall I say a few):
* We're not traveling to them xcoffeex
* As long as we don't play more than one non D-I it's ok xcoffeex
* I would have hoped no school I call out on this wouldn't have noticed xcoffeex
TexasTerror

You got that right...
We're not traveling to them (i.e UAPB to Henderson St, TxSo to Texas College even if it's a "Classic")...
We're only playing one sub-Div I like many programs do (remember App St did play Lenoir-Rhyne last year)...
And I only call out schools who play more than two sub-Div I teams (is that you TSU with Concordia, Texas College and Shaw?) or schools who are full scholarship that travel to sub-Div I teams (UAPB, TSU and Charleston Southern)...

SHSU needs this game because...
1) We need Bomar to get a game under his belt following his injury
2) Get the OLine some reps against some competition, regardless of who it is
3) A chance for some of our backup QBs who have never faced higher than JUCO or HS competition to see some Div II or higher competition in real-time.
SHSU has a lot of question marks and a game like this is a nice one...

TODD WHITTEN RECAP
Good camp and certainly healthy. Guys are ready to play a game. Won't know anything until we play on Thursday night, anxious to play against ECO. Div II out of LSC. Familiar with the LSC and that you better be ready because you'll get your heart broken in a hurry. They have changed defenses to 3-4. 20 transfers on roster. A lot of kids unable to evaluate on tape. Lot of unknowns. Staff will have to do job and figure them out, make adjustments and get team in position to have success. A very productive camp.
Kevin Gore (Nacogdoches) asked about OL and secondary...
Young on OL. Lost Dirk to broken leg. Set team back. Going to have to get up to speed in a hurry. Nice young players who have been around a year or few, just have not played. Secondary is healthy. Two seniors at corners, that are going to be solid in SLC. Group of 4, 5 safeties who have never played. Talented enough. A matter of getting game day reps and hopefully look back in a month and those guys will be ready.

All it took was 19 seconds to change the course of the 2007 football season for Sam Houston State.
That doesn’t seem like a lot of time, but on Sept. 15, 2007, 19 seconds felt like an eternity. The Bearkats had scored with 26 seconds left to go up 38-34 and put themselves on the verge of an upset of No. 4 North Dakota State in front of a packed house at the Fargodome.

Bomar is ready to go.
An hour before the Annual Orange/White game this past spring, the first Bearkat football player comes walking down the ramp toward the field at Bowers Stadium. Dressed in a T-shirt and shorts, he starts going through some agility drills.
It was similar to what you would see any football player doing before playing a game. The only difference was he wasn’t playing that day. It was just another typical morning in the rehabilitation process.
It had been five and a half months since Sam Houston State quarterback Rhett Bomar tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee against Nicholls State on Nov. 3 of last season. Ever since that day, Bomar has been travelling a path he never envisioned he would be on.

SHSU scores again...they are running the ball already time and time again. Currently, junior RB Chris Hardy, who is what amounts to our #4 or #5 RB (pre-Poullard being academically ineligible) is doing the job...
Hardy slowly works his way up to the goal line...and HARDY RUNS IT IN!

Coach Whitten Recap
Played clean. A few personal fouls. Took care of the ball well until the end of game. Anytime you win, it's good. Still got a lot of work to do. The open week will be good for us and get ready for PV.
Everyone played well. It was a good effort and I was pleased with the way we got ready and came out fast. A good win.
Derrick Raymer Interview
It was a good night, come out and start early. Last year against Angelo, took a bit to get going. Good way to start off last year he has. Marcus Johnson was very athletic, could see him doing some great things this year. Says hi to his relatives in Kansas

Rhett Bomar Interview
Was really excited, coming back from knee surgery and missing two games. Getting back out there. Ready to go all summer. First game, get off and have a good one.
Threw 4 TDs once before. Just wanted to win. Missed a few passes early, got going and felt comfortable.
OLine played great. Four new starters. Lost Dirk in scrimmage and three seniors. Performed well. Got some experience in two seniors. Played great and hope to keep it up.

Hard to drop the ball when you are running the old Dom Capers offense in the second half. Run left, right right, run up the middle...our backups went 3 for 3.
Kats went full throttle and scored on short drives at will in the first half. Called off the dogs in the second half...
Pat can't complain about dropped passes this week or next (since we got our OPEN week)...thank goodness!

I wouldn't say packed....student side was maybe 70-75% full from what I saw (still pretty good), and I sat on the other side for the first half.
God, by the start of the 4th, I'd say there was less than 1500 people there...and by the time I left with 5 mins left in the game..I'd say there was maybe...800?
Majority left at half, and for good reason....the game was over.

Rhett Bomar broke a slight smile when he was talking about the Bearkats’ season opener against East Central Oklahoma minutes after Thursday night’s game.
“I don’t think that has ever happened to me before,” Sam Houston State’s senior quarterback said as he left the interview room at the Ron Mafrige Field House.
He wasn’t talking about winning, but the fact that he didn’t even step on the field in the second half. Bomar completed 14-of-22 passes for 198 yards and four touchdowns, and running back James Aston picked up 115 yards and two more scores on the ground as the Bearkats easily disposed of East Central Oklahoma 58-14 at Bowers Stadium.
