Does anyone have a good list of the FCS wins over FBS the last four years.
Some radio douche in the ATL John Kincade for those that know was trashing GSU and the FCS in general. He ranted and ranted on how "Div I" teams should not be allowed to play "lower division teams". I responded to him and admitted that no doubt sure on average or in general there is a big talent gap between FCS and the FBS just like FCS and DIV II. However I said the top echelon teams in the FCS beat non BCS teams pretty regularly and there is overlap in talent between every division. Just like top DIV II could easily handle a lot of FCS teams. He did not want to hear that and said basically it was just luck and basically FCS teams only beat FBS teams due to the FBS team not playing well or "weird" bounces. Just want to send him a list of all the games that had "weird bounces". xpeacex

I know it's Idaho - but Montana is 4-1 vs UI since they moved to FBS.
Also the Griz beat Oregon State 35-14 ten years ago.
More recently though:
Portland State over New Mexico
Montana State over Colorado
Portland State over Hawaii
Idaho State over Utah State
Maine over Ole Miss

There was a list on I-AA.org or CSN (which should be back soon, the home page is up but the links don't work yet). IIRC the average for the last 8-10 years was FCS winning about one out of eight.

They should win more...they have 22 more scholarships per team. If you think about it, they have another full squad for offense and defense of scholarship players that FCS doesn't have......or think about it this way...an NFL team has 53 players, think if they played another NFL team with 75 players available!! If you want to rebut the "weird bounces" thing, talk about the North Dakota State win over Minnesota last season. You can link the game stats at http://www.gophersports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=38609&SPID=3280&DB_OEM_ID=8400&ATCLID=1284531
North Dakota State rushed for 394 yards at 8 yards per carry (Minnesota rushed for 125). The Bison had 27 first downs to Minnesota's 17. They had a 585 to 307 edge in total yards. They hit on 20 of 25 passing and had none intercepted while Minnesota hit on 11 of 23 with one interception.
So on and so forth. Total dominance. In fact, it's hard to see how Minnesota managed to stay in the game and lose by only 6 points. Certainly not a situation in which the transitional FCS won because of weird bounces.

More research needs to be done. What about the top 15 FCS in the last 8-10 years ?
what is the record for FCS top 15 versus FBS ?
And App has a problem, only the top FBS teams will even schedule us.

I maintain a database of how I-AA/FCS teams that went on to make the playoffs have done against I-A/FBS. It's not quite the "best" 16 (or 15) teams but I decided to do it that way because it's objective from my standpoint. Playoff teams are playoff teams. No concerns about debates over who was really in the group and who wasn't.
Overall during the past 10 seasons (1998-2007) it was 38-91; or about 1 in 3.4 games. The average score is 20-34 (I-AA/FCS score first).
But I think breaking it down into games vs. BCS league opponents and games vs. non BCS league opponents is informative.
Against BCS league opponents it's 10-56; or about 1 in 5.6 games. The average score is 16-37.
Against non BCS league I-A/FCS opponents it's 28-35; or about 1 in 2.3 games. The average score is 24-30.
Of course almost all of the games we're talking about were played at I-A/FBS home fields.
My guess is that if you did something like take the top 15 teams from final polls or from a power rating system like Sagarin the I-AA/FCS performace would look a little better but it'd probably be fairly similar.

I've always looked at Division I as really consisting of three levels: I-AA/FCS, non BCS I-A/FBS, and BCS I-A/FBS. The database I keep on that is only updated through 2006 (maybe I'll fix that this weekend) but I don't think things will change much when I add 2007. Here's how it went through 1998 - 2006:
I-AA/FCS vs. non BCS I-A/FBS: 58-264 (0.180); average score 17-36.
I-A/FBS non BCS vs. I-A/FBS BCS: 208-897 (0.188); average score 17-34.
Just to make sure it's clear: In this case I'm including all I-AA/FCS teams, not just playoff teams.
That's consistent with my belief that the difference between I-AA/FCS and I-A/FBS non BCS is comparable to the difference between I-A/FBS non BCS and I-A/FBS BCS. Also, I'm pretty sure the non BCS I-A/FBS non BCS teams got to play I-A/FBS BCS teams a higher percentage of the time than I-AA/FCS teams got to play at home against I-A/FBS non BCS teams.

Now those are VALID numbers. This is the information REAL sports writers should be using to write articles.
Other info that show a true picture is that :
1) ALL the games are Home games for BCS/1A schools
2) 22 extra scholarships
3) 3-5 star recruits
4) larger and newer facilities
5) More Bigger and faster players- APP will have about a 30lb difference on both sides of the lines with LSU.
Thank you for the info. You should get it published somewhere.

1) ALL the games are Home games for BCS/1A schools
I think that's likely to be true from now on. I know the Sun Belt has a rule that its teams can't play FCS teams on the road. I think the MAC does too and wouldn't be surprised if at least some of the other FBS leagues do as well.
I only know of four games between I-A/FBS and I-AA/FCS played at I-AA home fields. I've got Idaho playing at Montana in 1999, 2001, and 2003 as well as Buffalo playing at UConn (then I-AA) in 1999. So I think there have now been five seasons with no I-A/FBS teams playing at I-AA/FCS fields.

Minnesota scored on their first possession, then NDSU fumbled in the second quarter and the Gophers scored again. The last TD by Minnesota was after a roughing the passer penalty in the 3rd quarter. NDSU also missed two field goals xoopsx
NDSU took the lead in the fourth quarter and Minnesota never threatened to score. Actually the Gophers never even got past the 50 yard line in the final quarter. The game ended with NDSU having the ball in the red zone.

Just want to send him a list of all the games that had "weird bounces". xpeacex
First, JDC325, kudos to you for calling in and making your points to him. It wasn't the popular thing to do, but I'm sure what you said was absolutely correct. It's astounding how ignorant people are about the strength of top 1AA teams. I tried to do the same kind of thing on ESPN Radio when John Sybel (Sports Nation show) said that Joe Flacco's chances for NFL success are iffy "because he played DIVISION ONE-DOUBLE-A." I wanted to get on the radio and remind him of other lowly former "ONE-DOUBLE-A" quarterbacks like Tony Romo, Kurt Warner, Steve McNair, and Rich Gannon, and that's just one position!
Second, this radio guy in Atlanta is just saying what the most number of people want to hear, and making it just controversial enough to get a reaction. In other words, he's saying things just to get good ratings regardless of how accurate he is. If he said that the FBS vs. FCS games are good or that they might prove competetive, larger numbers of his audience might write him off as ridiculous and stop listening to his show.
It just stinks that ignorance of how good the best 1AA teams are is a validated practice in media "journalism."
Not everyone is like that, though. Stewart Mandel, a senior college football writer at Sports Illustrated has given 1AA teams a lot of cred from time to time.

Easy now... I'm in school now at Ball State, and the Cardinals went to the International Bowl last year, and they're not bad...
oh, who am I kidding?... Ball State football has no business being called 1A. i'm here for the program.
(not trying to belittle NDSU's win over BSU at all. it's still a team of 63 schollies beating one with 85.) :)
