i'm not going to do a poll on this... too many options... and myself, I like a bunch of them

here's a few that i think are glaring omissions

Cricket
Rugby
Golf
Surfing

Others to consider?
Sumo?
American Football (even though nobody else plays it at all)
Polo?
Croquet?
Bowling?
Rock climbing?

your thoughts?

i think only three in my opinion and they were the first three you named...

golf is a world wide sport and deserves to be there...
cricket is played by plenty of countries and would give India something to root for...
rugby is a major sport almost everywhere but here and it is catching on...

I agree.

I'll also add bowling. I wouldn't have, because I thought it would just be a way to get more medals for western countries, but I found this on Wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Ranking_Masters

Not to mention that being an Olympic sport would only increase its popularity.

I agree with your first four.

I would like to see Folkstyle wrestling added as well. That is the type of wrestling that our high schools and colleges do, but I think we are the only country that wrestles Folkstyle so it is unlikely to be added.
The Olympics currently wrestle Freestyle and Greco-Roman.

I also think horseshoes and bocci should be considered.
If they have curling in the winter games they can have horseshoes and bocci in the summer games.

The only problem with adding surfing is that it would limit where the games can be held (unless you built a kick a$$ wave pool). For instance, when the games are in London, are there any beaches with decent waves nearby?

Some of the others I agree with, though.

Surfing should be done indoors, with artificial water. Also there shouldn't be any sand around the water.;)

How do you win in Rock Climbing?

Wife Carrying needs to be in there. Apparently, there are a number different styles:

piggyback,
fireman's carry (over the shoulder),
Estonian-style (the wife hangs upside-down with her legs around the husband's shoulders, holding onto his waist - gotta wonder how they got credit for that one):D

I've long been of the opinion that there should be a "non sports olympics" for games like poker, bridge, chess, billiards, scrabble etc.

Golf ... that's at least a minimum of two more medals for the United States (and a possible bronze for Ireland)

Gold - Tiger
Silver - Mickelson (OK, maybe not)
Bronze - Padraig Harrington

If you're gonna add Golf, why not Disc Golf? It's played world wide and is just quirky enough to interest the IOC.

Surfing could be an Olympic Sport, but you'd have a hard time objectively scoring it since all waves are different. In Olympic Sailing and Windsurfing, the competitors are all on the water at the same time, competing in the same wind and wave conditions....

To further even the field, Olympic Sailboarding is a One Design Class with some really dog crap sailboards. I don't know what they're using now, but they used to use a piece o' shyte called a Lechner that was kinda hollow, took on water and sailed like a floating brick. It was absolutely the slowest board on the water. I guess the idea was for the sailor's skill to be tested..

The same holds true for the Laser, which is a racing dinghy. First, it's made for little people and, second, the rocker panel sucks and it tips over really, really, really easily when going off the wind. It does a maneuver called the "Death Roll" if you're not careful.

If they made regular surfing an Olympic event, they'd probably make the competitors all use a square wooden plank....

However, the wave pool idea is kinda cool. They could build it with a constant type of wave, and score the surfer based on artistic ability. Hell if they can build the temporary kayak river, they can build a surfing pavillion.

There's even some precendence for that, since in Europe, they sometimes hold indoor windsurfing events with a bank of incredibly large fans across one side of a pretty big indoor pool. They crank those things up to about a 20 knot breeze and let the guys either run a short triangle course or let them do some freestyle tricks. Hell, one guy did an indoor killer loop about 15 years ago, if memory serves me correctly....

I like the rock climbing idea.....

What about orienteering?

I would guess that it is very popular in the America's.

The only reason I could see for Gold not being in there is that the PGA is unwilling to tell one of their events to simply not be held once every 4 years so a handful of the top participants can go to the Olympics. Remember also that you'd likely be limiting the number of participants per country

Other than that, I can't see why Golf isn't an Olympic sport. It's not as if these major world cities don't have a decent course nearby. Heck, even that doesn't matter because you can basically hold Olympic events anywhere in the country (Equestrian was in Hong Kong, for example)

Something like Rugby wouldn't work given the general amount of time off between matches. It's very much like American Football in that you can really only play once a week, and would likely be too physically demanding to play a full tournament in the 2 week Olympic period xtwocentsx
