Elena DelleDonne, the nations #1 women's HS basketball player in the class of 2008 annonced today that instead of going to UConn where she signed a LOI, she'll enroll at Delaware, would be eligible to play sports starting in the fall of 2009.

Is she going to play basketball, though? The word up here is that she's more likely to play volleyball.

The girl has been swarmed with media attention since she was in the seventh grade. My guess is that she just wants to get away from it all and doesn't really know at this point what she wants to do.

I don't see any way she can not play bball at UD. 2008 will be a long season for her to watch. By 2009 she will be ready to jump back in. This would be huge for UD Women's hoops. Tina Martin has done an outstanding job with the program and she deserves a player like EDD. xthumbsupx

I've read that she has a sister with cerebral palsy that she helps care for and is so close to that she wanted to stay closer to home. When the UConn player (don't know name) spouted off at the mouth about Elena leaving, I think that kind of sealed any chance of her returning to Storrs.

This will be very interesting to watch. She's obviously a special talent in basketball, but is supposedly very excited about volleyball as well.

Wow, UConn released her from her scholarship today, so she can play this winter at UD if she decides to:

I have to applaud UConn for this classy move, as opposed to say, Dave Wannstedt and Pitt's refusal to release Joe Flacco, which caused him to burn a year of eligibilty and tuition at Delaware.

According to an article in today's Hartford Courant, Delle Donne will be playing volleyball for UD. There's supposed to be a press conference tomorrow.

From today's press conference: Hasn't touched a basketball since early June & can be a "really really good" VB player. Door is always open.
