well if they wanna have 3 on 3 outside court games fine hold em in summer, but we're talking about competitive team basketball and I did specify that competive seasons are held during the winter.

True but thats winter in our Northern hemisphere. Plus international soccer is played through the winter. Its a good question but it just doesn't fit in with winter sports IMO.

I would guess it's because basketball was already an Olympic sport before there was such a thing as the Winter Olympics. So it's in the SO by default; no compelling reason to move it. Plus I can't think of any WO events that aren't ice- or snow- or winter-weather-related. It would be something of an awkward fit there, I think.

Also, I believe basketball as an Olympic sport predates the existence of the NBA, so it may not have been thought of as a winter-season sport in the way we think it to be now.
