With Lehigh on the road today, I took in the Wilkes Colonels vs. Moravian Greyhounds at Moravian's Steel Field in a nice steady drizzle. Moravian has a beautiful new Fieldturf surface and with a roof over the home grandstand a crowd of close to 2000 braved the elements. However, I was taken with what the announcer said was the resurecting of a new tradition. After their mascot's name, Moravian has not one, but two greyhounds who have been 'rescued' and are now permenant residents in Bethlehem, PA. When Moravian's team came out onto the field in the East endzone, one of the two greyhounds was taken to the 'head of the pack' , unleashed and dashed the length of the field to his handlers and 'companion' at the other end. What a scene.
Postscript: Moravian could have used their greyhound. Fell behind 20-0 at half, rallied to 20-17, but got burned on a questionable one-hand catch in endzone by Wilkes that sealed a 27-17 loss. A very spirited game, however, and enjoyed it immensely while listening to my Mountain Hawks 'tuning up' for Colgate. :D

I dated a Moravian girl in the mid 90's for a while. Quite the looker but FU'ed in the head. Tough school academically from what I understand...

The greyhound rescue movement is alive and well and I'm glad to see that Moravian has jumped in. These are dogs that were bred for racing who did not pan out. There is an organization that works tirelessly to find homes for these animals. There is also a huge convention type get together in Dewey Beach De. in either the end of September/Beginning of October where thousands of Greyhound owners and their dogs attend. It is quite a site.

The thing I never liked about their Grandstand was the "bricked in" sides. If you sit too high up in the stands and off-center, your view of the endzone can be obstructed.

Incidently, there used to be a basketball court underneath the grandstand. I know they're renovating it because the visiting team's locker-room is underneath and for years was an embarrassement to the league. I don't know if they're keeping the court.

As a I-AA tie in: They've renamed it Rocco Calvo Field in honor of former Moravian head coach and athletic director, Rocco Calvo. Rocco was the starting QB at Cornell in '50 and '51. He led the Big Red to a victory over Michigan at Schellkopf Field.

True--but I can't think of another college stadium where you have a roof over your head! On days like Saturday, I take the trade-off. As far as I know, the b-ball court still exists underneath. The visiting team still uses it to spread their stuff out. Moravian's team uses a field house constructed about 15 years ago down the hill next to the practice field. A bit of a trek for them to go down and back at halftime.

The field house is more like 25-30 years old. Trust me on this one! ;)

No argument from me...the memory at my age plays tricks on me all the time--stuff that 'seems like yesterday' :D
