I used to love the Olympics, but this year just seems different to me.
I don't know whether its because of what I think is a completely inappropriate place to hold the games, or if it is because my nephew should have been there had he not gotten injured.
I don't know, I just can't get into it.

The opening ceremony is largely about the host country. Religion has played a pretty significant role in Chinese history.
China and other countries don't want to host the games because they love sports. They host it to show off their country.

How is the overall medal winner usually determined?
Is it just overall medals? Because then the US is in the lead.
Is it something like 3 points for gold, 2 points for silver, 1 point for bronze? Then China would be in the lead.

This is the full table of the medal count of the 2008 Summer Olympics, based on the medal count of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). These rankings sort by the number of gold medals earned by a country. The number of silver medals is taken into consideration next and then the number of bronze medals. If, after the above, countries are still tied, equal ranking is given and they are listed alphabetically. This follows the system used by the IOC.

"Officially"? Says who? You? In all fairness, I think you're getting wound up over nothing. This is the first time I've ever heard anyone claim "engrish" rises to the level of hate speech. I know you're our resident sino-phile and all, but lighten up, Flancis.
And for the record, if you really want to go there, "chinglish" as a substitute officially sounds even worse, and it fails to account for the same phenomenon in Japan, the Koreas, Vietnam, etc. "Engrish" will play for both Kowloon and Kyoto with panache, whereas "chinglish" is just as silly, lacks the same cachet, and isn't versatile enough to be accurately applied to the entire region. Of course your focus is a bit narrower, as I understand it, but East and Southeast Asia is actually a pretty big place. I looked at it on a map and everything. It's huge.

I responded before you made the edit. I respect the accomplishments of all Olympic athletes but it still doesn't take away what you clearly meant by it.
You need to look in a mirror. You brought this whole issue up and need to defend yourself instead of calling people haters and deflecting arguments by saying "this isn't the politics thread". You brought the "hate speech" into this and opened that floodgate.

Almost feels like they lost this one. Should have won it
Adu and Bradley out vs. Nigeria, but the Super Eagles will be missing 2 players as well
NGA 1-1-0 4 +1
USA 1-1-0 4 +1
NED 0-2-0 2 E
JPN 0-0-2 0 -2
We're going to need at least a point, and if we get just 1, the Dutch to win by only 1 (or somehow see Japan draw/win)

It was just like watching a Chinese movie, dubbed over in engrish.
You know that is officially hate speech? xsmhx Non-hate speech term is Chinglish (Chinese-English).
Can you please support this statement. I have found no evidence that engrish is considered hate speech. There are several websites devoted to it, mostly dealing with the humorous misuse to the english language by people from southeast asia (mostly Japan, chinglish seems to be an equavalent term aimed at the Chinese).
If there is an actual U.S. law regarding the specific use of engrish and chinglish, I would like to see it. Thanks.

You have something in common with Bush...
Pres. Bush declines to slap Misty May-Treanor's bikinied butt
President George W. Bush, who played baseball, coached Little League, owned a big league team and watches the Texas Rangers at every opportunity, can't stay away from the U.S. teams at the Beijing Olympic games.
Today, as the busy crowd over at our Olympics blog notes, after an hour's brisk bit of mountain-biking himself, Bush paid another visit to the American athletes, watching the women warm up for softball, regretting the disappearance of that sport from the next Olympics ("It's good for the world to have girls playing softball and these women are going to show young girls how to win") and trying his hand, so to speak, at volleyball.
Bush knuckled off a couple of lobs, but defending gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh gave the chief executive some pointers. Then after a good play, in the tradition of female volleyballers, May-Treanor turned, bent over slightly and offered her bikinied rear-end for the 43rd president to slap.
"Mr. President," she said, "want to?"
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/08/09/beachvolleyball2.jpg
Want to has nothing to do with it in public life.
As the son of a president, a husband of nearly 37 years, the father of two daughters, the subject of some attempted tabloid exposes and a seasoned political veteran, who is not a female athlete but knows that every camera for a half-mile is trained on him, Bush wisely chose instead to brush his hand across the small of May-Treanor's back. (See photo.)

keep your politics out of it, others did when it was held in America... it is about athletics, not politicians... any place is appropriate for the games
Are the athletes not keeping their word on the pollution? What word on the pollution????? xsmhx
(you haters can go back in your political hole, this is about the Olympics and the athletes)
You know that is officially hate speech? xsmhx Non-hate speech term is Chinglish (Chinese-English).
Because it is a racial slur, generalization that is demeaning. It is against everything the Olympics are about. The love of international competition without politicization, hatred, color, creed. It is the pinnacle for most of the sporting world. Witness USA's Mariel Zagunis crying on the stand with her sabre gold medal today. It is the highest honor. Honor does not deserve to be dissapated by racism and slurs.

That relay...was absolutely unreal. I passed out (cracked my skull open yesterday while sailing...bloody mess) and woke up right when it started. I was screaming so loud at the TV, I felt like I was a the horse track. Unreal...that last 46 second leg was insane.
That "Frog" (yes...that is a "LEGAL" term...and applied regularly to the French, Navy Seals, and others), had about a two body length lead crushed in the last 30 meters.
Unreal.
Phelps still on track for an unheard of 8 medals.

That a joke? You must subscribe to the same "state" run newswire as SE.
You MUST be 16 to be in the Olympics. The youngest Olympian ever to medal: Sonjia Henning at 13...a lifetime ago. The youngest Olympians recently were back in 1996, I believe, when Aerobic gymnasts could be 14. In 1996, the rules were changed to 16. You can be 15 in your Olympic year in some sports as long as you turn 16 within a short-time period, within the Olympic year.

I have worked and spent numerous MONTHS in France and I think all Frenchman (and women) I know would scoff at such a term.
They go by Frenchman, The French (as coined by their Constitution of the Third Republic), Franks, People of the Republic, or by the endearing term they use for their National soccer team, "Les Bleus".
Their are other nicknames however, Frenchies and Frogs are not considered endearing terminology.

Beijing Killer 'An Angry Failure'
A Chinese man who stabbed the father-in-law of a US Olympic coach to death in Beijing was a "failure who took his anger out on society", officials say.
Tang Yongming, 47, launched a frenzied attack at the historic Drum Tower in the heart of the capital as the Games got into full swing.
Todd Bachman died from his injuries while his wife Barbara suffered multiple lacerations and stab wounds.
She remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital after undergoing an eight-hour operation.
Their Chinese tour guide was also attacked but is out of danger.
Tang - who jumped to his death from the Tower immediately afterwards - was a homeless, jobless, twice-divorced man from the affluent eastern city of Hangzhou.
The former factory worker left his rented house at the beginning of August, telling his son he would return once he had made a success of himself.
He also urged to 21-year-old - serving a suspended jail sentence for theft - to stay ut of trouble.
State-run Xinhaua news agency, quoting police in his home town, said: "Tang had lost all hope after a series of failures in his life and took his anger out on society."
The US Embassy in Beijing said the attack appeared to be "a senseless act of violence".
"We have no reason to believe that the assailant targeted the victims as American citizens," it said in a statement.
Beijing Olympic spokesman Wang Wei said: "We are going to strengthen the security at scenic spots ... to make sure no sharp weapons can be brought into the area.
"Beijing is a safe city but unfortunately we are not immune to violent acts."

I was in South Korea during the 2004 games and they didn't seem to care about swimming or track and field all that much. Lots of archery, handball, badminton, judo, and table tennis for some reason.
I was at work and there was a restaurant on the bottom floor and we could here loud cheering when the Korean beat the Chinese for the men's single gold in table tennis.

Yeah... unfortunately that's how the medal count is measured. Gold medals are taken into account first. Any ties in that goes to the silver, etc.
I think it's kinda BS. The US got 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in women's individual sabre a few days ago. That's really worth as much to the US medal count as getting 1 gold and the rest not medaling. Doesn't make sense... but, oh well.
I think giving gold 3 points, silver 2, and bronze 1 point makes more sense.

That's not the official medal count.
The ranking in this table is based on information provided by the International Olympic Committee. The ranking sorts by the number of gold medals earned by a country (in this context a country is an entity represented by a National Olympic Committee). The number of silver medals is taken into consideration next and then the number of bronze medals. If, after the above, countries are still tied, equal ranking is given and they are listed alphabetically by IOC country code.

Yeah but I understand the rationale, the USA has 600 participants and can get medals in everything where other teams can't. So base it on who has the best, not the most.
First, China has more participants than the US. It's typical for the host country to have the most competitors.
1.China - 639 competitors
2.United States - 596 competitors
3.Russia - 467 competitors
4.Germany - 439 competitors
Second, in an instance like my women's individual sabre example... the silver medalist would have won gold had the other US rep not been there. Same with the bronze. That's still basing it on who has the best athletes, not the most.

That is the only obstacle left between Phelps and history. And it is an American teammate that stands in the way.
