Bobcats Begin Football Fall Camp
96 Players Report For First Practice
Aug. 5, 2008
San Marcos, Texas - Despite having to battle temperatures nearing 100-degrees, the Texas State football team began their preparations for the 2008 season with a spirited, two-and-one-half hour practice Monday afternoon on the Bobcat practice fields.
Beginning his second season as the school's head coach, Brad Wright was quite pleased with the efforts of his team that consisted of 96 returning and new players.
"It was good first day," Wright said. "Everyone came out ready to go and looked like they were in decent shape. That is all you can gauge when they are in shorts and helmets."
Wright was particularly happy with the play of his offensive unit that returns nine offensive starters from last season.
"The learning curve on offense was good and we had good retention over the summer," Wright said.
He also is confident in the progress of Texas State's defensive unit that features three new coaches. Fred Bleil is the new defensive coordinator and also coaches the Bobcat safeties. Mike Bugar has taken over as the defensive line coach and Steve Irvin will coach the cornerbacks. Terrell Dillon is the only defensive coach returning from last season and he returns as the linebacker coach. Dillon also serves as the special teams coordinator.
"There is no doubt that we are going to be better defensively this year," Wright said. "The coaches are doing a great job for us and we feel like we are a better defense now than we were at anytime during the spring."
