View Full Version : I'm actually glad the Phillies didn't try to acquire Manny Ramirez

I don't follow the Junior Circuit, therefore, I wasn't very familiar with him. My god, he's as big a douchebag as Clemmons, Randy Johnson or Barry Bonds.:

No Dodging it: Manny Ramirez just a bad, bad man (http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/red_sox/view.bg?articleid=1110406)

How did those fackin' Red Sawx fans put up his crap?

Career Numbers
Average: .312
Hits: 2,318
HR: 510
RBI: 1,672
On-Base: .409
Slugging: .590
OPS+: 154

Add in his 2 World Series titles, a World Series MVP, and the big boost he gave to Ortiz by hitting 4th in the lineup, and you've got a team and fanbase willing to put with a lot of crap

I'm curious as to what Phillies fans would do. They wanted to run T.O. out of town on a rail for behavior that wasn't nearly as egregious. Rickie Watters was very unpopular despite putting up great numbers while with the Eagles. Very few people got upset over A.I. being traded.

The closest the Phillies have come to trading away a locker room cancer with great numbers was Dick "don't call me Richie" Allen. That was before my time.

Hey old timer Phils fans, can you help me out here?

Yes, I'd agree that trading Richie Allen was one of the biggest deals of an established star. Jim Thome was moved a few years ago, but that was due for legitimate reasons with his injuries and Howard's arrival. How about Wilt Chamberlain to the Lakers???? Did the Sixers trade Moses Malone, or did he leave as a free agent? Flyers dealt Lindros with his 'head' issues.

Malone was traded to the Bullets for Jeff "Oww my knee" Ruland. A couple of minor guys were involved too. That trade pretty much set the tone for the Harold Katz era of the Sixers. It's not a coincidence either that within 5 year, I had given up on 76er basketball and have yet to jump back on the bandwagon.

The avg Phillie fan would not have liked to see Manny come in. But we would have embraced him until his 1st incident. Then he would be boo'd and heckled. Probably hear the A-hole chant throughout the stadium.

Speak for yourselves, I think Phillies fans including myself would have been overjoyed to get Manny. Just look how pissed off all those Dodger fans are....xwhistlex

If you listen to any of the '93 Phillies, they almost to a man state that they couldn't stand Curt Schilling. They particularly hated his towel-over-the-face show that he did for the cameras every time Mitch Williams came out. If you watch the "10 Reasons You Can't Blame Mitch Williams for the '93 Phillies Losing The World Series" episode on ESPN, I believe it's Larry Anderson that says, "If you're that nervous, get your ass up in the clubhouse and put a towel over your face instead of looking for which camera is on you and sitting in front of it"".

Schilling was a prime case of where the results were so good that you just put up with him.

I assume that any deal for Manny would have involved Burrell. I'd rather have Burrell right now. He is playing well and fits in with the team. No telling what Manny would do to team chemistry.

AIR, by 1968 in Wilt wanted out and demanded a trade and many were sad to see him go. However, Philly was his hometown and he was never the head case that Manny was. He was egotisical and selfish as an athlete - simply bigger than the game, in many ways - but he definitely had a better side and managed to show it from time to time in Philadelphia.

His act got old real quick. I personally never found him funny and saw him as more of a distraction than anything else. I'm glad Theo Epstein agreed. Manny will fit in well in LA with the Hollywood crowd.

I fully agree. Despite his numbers, I think his presence would have created a problem with what appears to be a tight knit group of players.
