Adam Caplan: The Detroit Lions drafted Kevin Smith in the third round with the belief that the former University of Central Florida running back will take over the starting job at that position this season.
The coaching staff believes Smith is a perfect fit for new offensive coordinator Jim Colletto's power rushing scheme.
Even though they expect him to be the starter for a long time to come, Smith only signed a three-year deal with base salaries of: (2008) $295,000 (2009) $385,000 (2010) $470,000. Smith will also receive a signing bonus of just under $650,000.
Also signing a three-year deal was fifth-round pick Jerome Felton.
The former Furman University fullback will receive the same minimum base salaries as Smith along with a signing bonus of just over $136,000.
Because of the offensive scheme change, the fullback will be a bigger part of Colletto's offense which makes Felton's importance to the team
