..was at the game in Seattle on Monday and I have to tip the hat to the Sox fans. They were out in force and easily outnumbered the Mariner fans (not hard to do this season).. The entertainment value was priceless..listening to the smack flying back and forth between fans, especially a fan with an Adrian Beltre' LA Dodgers jersey on. If I could have recorded it for youtube it would have been priceless.

Sorry, but I don't think you understand Red Sox Nation at all. Part of the membership requirement is to state that you've never been a Yankee fan nor will you ever root for the Pinstripes. xrulesx :p xwhistlex xwhistlex If you've been a true fan of either team, there is no cross over. xsmhx
As a seven year old in 1957, I became a Milwaukee Braves fan for the sole purpose of making a wager with my Father, a Yankee Fan, on the 1957 World Series. To this day I have never rooted for the Yankees in any World Series regardless of their opponent. I either abstained and ignored the Series like the year they played the Mets or rooted for teams that I had no real interest in.

most of the people around the country who've "always loved the sox" are johnny-come-lately's who cheer for the team now that they are on top. then they talk about "always being fans" even though, when prompted they couldn't tell you about the lean years.
it's okay... they've been conditioned after years of watching ESPN...

I've never met a Red Sox fan who was at one time a Yankee fan... xeyebrowx
The Yankee's are hated more than can really be comprehended by healthy normal adults...
Red Soxs fans are a unique bunch

Red Sox fans at these games are either transplanted New Englanders or people who've traveled on vacation to watch the away games. Numerous travel packages are sold with tickets to an entire series along with airfare and lodging. New Englanders genuinely love Red Sox baseball. It's in the genes and passed along to each generation.
FWIW, the sections of New England that are Yankee Country were put into the Foundry in that Nine Nations book. ;) :D
For me, my father's influence was overwhelmed by the combined influence of a grandfather, two uncles and a couple of cousins who were all Red Sox fans residing in NE Massachusetts.

BS. I know plenty of Sox "fans" that root for them cause "<random relative> lives in Mass" or some equally retarded reason. There are plenty of "real" fans at the away games, but there are also plenty that give the whole group a bad name.
Games against the Red Sox were so much simpler before 2004. A Boston fan is pissing you off? No problem, you always had the 1918 chant to respond with, and they always shut up. Those were the days...

Want to see evidence of "Red Sox Nation" at it's finest? Just visit Montana, and check out all the college kids, many of whom are locals, wearing Red Sox hats. In 2004, my senior year, it was amazing how many Sox fans came out of the woodwork during their "Hollywood" playoff run; the shear number of Sox regalia seen on campus increased 10x over night.

While part of it is bandwagon jumpers, this is another part of it. The Yankees, Mets, and Cubs seem to also benefit from this a lot. The Steelers get it big time as well.

Its only New York fans that are famous for bandwagon jumping between the Yanks and Mets.
When I was at UD in the late 80's it was all Mets, only knew one Yank fan.

Harris Interactive Poll: Baseball Fans (http://www.harrisinteractive.com/harris_poll/index.asp?PID=929)
The knock on Yankee fans as frontrunners is unfair. Win or lose, the Yankees rate as the No. 1 choice of baseball fans.
