Can't happen this year because the SLC re-did the paperwork, but the conference may have lost it's automatic bid last year -- though McNeese would've gotten it at 10-1 as an at-large. Interesting story on this whole situation...too bad it couldn't happen this year, that would've been intriguing to see the committee try to figure it out.
--------------------
"Going into the game, we raised that question with the NCAA and we did not receive a clear answer," said Burnett about the automatic qualifier if UCA earned the title. "In discussion, it ranged from 'we don't know,' to 'that's a committee decision' to the conference might lose the automatic berth. It was all over the place.

"If UCA would have won, it would have come down to a decision and an interpretation by the NCAA championship committee and no one really knows how that would have gone," Burnett added. "McNeese, at 10-1, was no question in the playoffs, but they might not have been a No. 2 seed. A loss could have cost them a high seed. As it turned out, the AQ was never an issue because McNeese won and the NCAA never had to make a decision or interpretation on it."

But it changed the way the league did its technical paperwork this season

...and it's not always best to leave it to the "interpretation of the NCAA".

Solution to fixing the playoff berth problem:

If the SLC championship game falls on the fourth saturday and the full moon is waning in the third house of aries , with exception that if the flowering locust lilly is blooming on the southern side of lake Minnitonka of course, then the team with the second best record could receive the automatic bid!

or.....

Just end the stupid transition period for UCA!!!!!!!!xmadx

The NCAA should have solutions for these type of "what-if" scenarios, to alleviate controversy in the event they should occur. Wait, what am I thinking? This is the NCAA, an organization which thrives on secrecy and controversy. xoopsx

The SLC worked to "fix" if you will the transition issues facing UCA (and for that matter, other schools). Unfortunately, their legislation did not go far. It was a good attempt with Burnett putting his all behind it, but it came crumbling down.

The SLC gave it a good try but couldn't get anybody else to come along.

I know the SLC has done everything they could to move it along..Heck, the SLC has done nothing but treated UCA like Kings since we've joined! That is something many many UCA fans appreciate more than you guys know. We'll wait out 2 seasons then in 2010...xanim_chaix xasswhipx
