No DJ Smith? Some ASU people are going to be upset? Looks like the coaches have spoken on this one. While I think he will be on the postseason list I do think people have overhyped him and some others just because of one or two good playoff games.
Layton Baker is an interesting selection. He has been on the list before but injuries have hampered him. Anyone know if he is 100%?

Funny thing is that I read JC transfer Malcolm Bennett was their best on the DL in spring ball and he isn't even on the list. I do agree with leaving him off at this point, though. He hasn't played yet and that is just hype to this point.

Totally agree with you. Roberts should be 1st team for sure. Hillary is fast, quick, and came up with big plays last year but did not have the numbers of Roberts and probably won't this year. Roberts is your go-to guy while Edwards has 3 or 4 receivers who could potentially earn all-socon. It is impossible to pick which one will put up the numbers for that honor this year.

Coley belongs. He was all-socon last year. Not many returning RBs this year. I think their guesses are as good as any. Maybe the Citadel RB could be included in the discussion for potential all-league?
Acitelli is a past all-socon member so i can see that.
Anyone feel a player was truly snubbed and should have at least made the 2nd team?

Nobody on here said DJ Smith is not an all-conference caliber player. He belongs on the 2nd team and I am a little surprised he was not on there with Roman making it. He has the numbers and showed well in the playoffs.
The only problem anyone has had with the DJ conversations is that people have said he is better than Coakley when DJ has done nothing as of yet to back that statement up. He could one day earn that distinction and has 3 years to earn that.

We only have one RB back this year that took snaps last? Ricky Anderson should be the man, but he had an ACL tear as a Freshman and has yet to play a down.

ok i see where you are coming from... i for one would never make such a statement so early (partially bc i was between about 9 and 11 years old when he played and had never heard of asu and partially bc i have seen the stats and recognition and those are just insane numbers) prove it to me on the field, get a socon defensive poy this year and now we are talking... sound good?

Ahhh!!! We have little experience but more skill at running back this year. Look for 1-2 of our 3 true freshman RBs to get significant playing time, esp. if Anderson's knee is a problem. But I think Anderson is ready. He participated in the spring, but was held back from contact as a precaution.

Wiggins has started every game for WCU the last 2 seasons at center and along with Bradley and Phillips manning the defensive side of the ball, he possesses the traits of a true senior leader. Glad to see him finally getting recognized. I expect more Catamounts on the post season team after we shock the conference this year.

Agreed. Devon needs to prove it on the field. He's done a very good job as KR's backup. He's come up big in big situations (see JMU 4th down catch.) However, with the spotlight on him now, let's see how he does. I hope he's on the final All-SoCon list, too.

Yeah, but what you haven't seen are a number of other backs that will be starting for other teams this year. I got no problem with him being first team in the pre-season, and he may well be post-season also; I'm just saying that is one position in particular where I think that we may see some new folks really make a splash this year.

Want some cheese with that whine?
Roberts is good. Hudgins is good. And to question Hudgins is a exercising in hilarity. Maybe you should question the App love fest everyone has rather than question why the best receiver is there. Roberts should be first team.
BTW, beating a team has nothing to do with how could or not a player is. We beat GSU, but Foster was still the best offensive player in the country. Give me a break. Talk about an idiotic argument.
Get used to Hudgins. He's the best WR in the conference right now. You have two more seasons to hear about him.

The one you refer to, Ricky Ponton, is the only transfer running back we have. We also have Zeke Rozier, who as a true freshman last year was SoCon newcomer of the week for our second game, at Coastal Carolina. He also had a season ending injury in that game, but he therefore has four years of eligibility left and word about his recovery is that it's been VERY successful. I was not referring to just our guys earlier, however. I think there may be others, at THE Citadel for example, that may step up, also.

This is from a third party who has seen both players play...
Roberts is more technically sound, runs better routes, and is used in a much more diverse fashion then Hudgins is. Hudgins is used outside in hopes he gets a 1v1 match-up or the safety is late getting over.
That's the long and short of it.

I'm a Wofford person talking about a Citadel and Elon wide receiver. I have no love for either team, no offense, but I do have a respect for what they do. Elon slings the ball 50-60 times a day. Hudigns gets the ball any way Elon can try. Jail-break screens & long shots etc. He gets the ball thrown his way many more times then you think.
Citadel runs a balanced system. They throw the ball 20-25 times a game. However, Roberts still competes with Hudgins despite being 1 of two very good receivers at Citadel. Coupled with that, Roberts runs a lot of 'underneath' routes, rather then simply outside deep routes. You can only do so much by running into the teeth of a defense. You have fewer opportunities to really break open long runs after catch, etc.
Believe me when I say, in this case, Hudgins is not as good as so many people at Elon think he is. You may not believe me and I really could care less, but he is.
Sorry.

Believe me when I say, in this case, Hudgins is not as good as so many people at Elon think he is. You may not believe me and I really could care less, but he is.
Sorry.
You're entitled to your opinion. Too bad you're about the only one that holds it. Hard to argue against the coaches and media who see these kids much more than you.
And if that's all you think Elon does in getting the ball to Hudgins, then you have blinders on. Especially since half his performance were center field into coverage and he made the plays while covered by multiple people (he played slot as much as outside). I'm guessing you're basing you expert opinion on what you saw of each over the course of maybe 4 games total out of 22 games for each of them. Considering I've seen 20 games Hudgins has played in, I'm willing to bet my assessment of what he does it more accurate. xrolleyesx
Also considering that 3 Elon receivers were top 10 in the SoCon should prove to you that Hudgins isn't all there is; Williamson and Mayers had equal numbers of breakout games as Hudgins did this year.
As for slinging the ball 50-60 times. That's a bit misleading since apparently people like you don't keep up with recaps. Half of Riddle's "passes" against Wofford and Western alone were shovel passes to someone in motion. Not exactly "slinging" the ball downfield. xrolleyesx

Seeing 20 games he's played in is rather impressive, I must say.
But, as is frequently the case, I'll wait until the post-season All-SoCon awards come out before I give the list of names any credit.

Ok, you guys are making me laugh now. I guess all the anti-Elon crap means we've officially arrived.
Roberts may run better routes, he hasn't from the two games I've seen him in. He's been put on bad one on one opportunities where a mismatch leaves him wide open and maximizes on the speed from there. Hudgins is put in double and triple team areas and makes plays happen. Hudgins is the better player.
Both are good players. And the fact that GSU fans are focusing all the negativity on us makes me laugh really hard.

Well, there's one out of left field! Only two of us have posted in this thread and neither of us said anything about Elon; so what do you base that on?

Elon will have a lot to live up to this season. They aren't sneaking up on anyone.
Hudgins, however, is just about the best I've seen at his position. I was at the game where Hofstra brought Marques Colston (a year before he torched NFL dbs with the Saints) and he wasn't as impressive as Hudgins was.
Yes, Elon plays in a pass happy system. However, that means their receivers and QB don't get to take plays off. When I watched Elon play (small sample size) their running game was atrocious. The Citadel has more offensive weapons and that takes the pressure off some of their individual playmakers.

Trey Elder was pre-season 1st team selection in 06... These polls mean nothing. I still don't see Moore as the guy. I may be wrong but I've been saying all year that I would rather see Robert Welton or Rod Chisholm out there over Moore...
Even with his 46 yard run against UD. 100 yards rushing his first game starting? 7 TD's I believe oin the season starting only one game. 4th down catch against JMU. He's one of the best reciever RB's i've seen speaking of that. He'll start and Robert Welton aand Josh Jackson(IMO) will split two back sets with Devon. I personally am excited to see Devin Radford play at App. Dexter Jackson speed at Runningback. Rod being redshirted would make since.
