Casey Kelly is now officially a member of the Red Sox organization.

Kelly, the team's top pick (30th overall) in last month's First-Year Player Draft, will officially be introduced as part of the organization on Thursday during a 6:30 p.m. ET media conference call.

The Sarasota (Fla.) High School standout will report to the Rookie League Gulf Coast Red Sox.
Kelly was noted highly on Boston's Draft board for his abilities as a shortstop and as a pitcher. He hit .473 with five homers and 31 RBIs in 2008 and showed excellent range in the field.

How much does single A pay?
1st round picks generally get paid very very well even while playing in the minors.

I know Kelly was very interested in going to Tenn so he likely got a nice signing bonus as well.

In 2005 the Sox gave their 1st rounder Craig Hansen a major league deal paying him $4MM over four years. He makes more than Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia and Jon Lester combined.

Financial terms haven't been released yet but Kelly will begin as a SS in the minors and will be exposed to pitching at some point.

Not a simple question. (My nephew is in negotations with the Rays so I've seen it first hand).

The minor league contract is a standard contract. The vast majority (99% of signees) sign a minor league contract. 7 year deal with pay of $1100 per month while in season. Living expenses are taken out of that $1100. So simply put - they make nada.

A kid can sign a major league contract and play in the minors. That is generally reserved to only the top 10 or 15 picks though. Tim Beckham (1st pick overall) signed a major league contract to play in the minors. A major league contract is not standard in any way. They are individually negotiated.

The salary is not where the money is made though. The money is made in the signing bonus. The bonuses are generally in a "step" plan meaning you have some sort of idea what others in your area will get when you are negotiating. First rounders are talking multiple millions of dollars in bonus money to be paid out over a few years for them. Tim Beckham the first round pick received a $6.15 million signing bonus.

My nephew (4th rounder that negotiated "above slot" before he was picked) is looking at about $500,000 signing bonus but will be signing the standard minor league contract.
