Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Spectrum, home of the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers and NBA's Philadelphia 76ers for nearly 40 seasons, is set to close its doors next spring and will be demolished.

The building in South Philadelphia opened on September 30, 1967 with the Quaker City Jazz Festival. It was the home of the Flyers and 76ers until both teams moved into the nearby state-of-the-art Wachovia Center in 1996.

Inevitible, but still sad. Growing up it was JFK, the Spectrum and the Vet in a row. The sad part for me is it was 'born' the same year as I was (Flyers too) so I kinda feel like my days are numbered too. xeekx :p

Don't worry, you are not on the "to-be-demolished" list...

Here's a Spectrum Trivia Question for ya:

Who was the first employee that had their office moved from the Spectrum to the then-CoreStates Center, and then have it moved back to the (Core States) Spectrum?

I saw the Harlem Globetrotters crush the Washington Genereal in the Spectrum way back when!

Many fond memories of the Spectrum growing up in South Jersey and going to the U of D. Saw many a Flyers/Sixers game and several great concerts. I can now say "back when I was a boy" I attended events at the Spectrum, Vet, and JFK in Philadelphia, now all gone. Of course now our new Stadiums are much nicer.

I remember when the roof blew off! It had only been open for a couple of years then. Lots of fond memories, but it is obsolete. What will they replace it with? More parking?

Says restaurants and shopping. Not sure how that will go over. I can't imagine anyone going there on dark nights. xconfusedx xeyebrowx

I have probably been to the Spectrum a dozen times -

One Flyers game, one Sixers game and ten or so concerts. :)

I guess I won't actually miss it that much. xpeacex

Probably the right thing to do but sad. I saw a lot of events there and always liked the place. Easy to get to, as well.

forgive my Philly ignorance (i lived in bucks county for a mere 6 months). JFK? I know the Spectrum, I know the Vet... but what was JFK?

I feel like this is pretty obvious, but I'm not familiar with it.

JFK was home to the Army-Navy game for many years, and the Eagles played there briefly...also hosted Live Aid...

JFK was a pretty cool looking stadium. I somewhat remember it as a kid going to Phillies/Eagles games before it was torn down in 1992. My uncle attended the last event there, the Grateful Dead concert on 7/7/89. What a great concert that was too.

Here's an awesome pictorial someone did before JFK was torn down.

I "attended" that one as well. I put attended in quotations because I don't remember all of it!

Luckily someone recorded it: http://www.archive.org/details/gd89-07-07.sbd.wiley.7855.sbeok.shnf

JFK was an enormous stadium, btw. After Live Aid, they left a lot of the billboards up, so even at the GD concert years later, there was still a large Feed The World sign running the entire top of one side of the stadium. It was really falling apart before it was condemned.

I'll miss the Spectrum. I had Flyers season tickets for many years, the Spectrum had a lot of character - much more than the Wachovia Center IMHO.

I was there too.

I saw The Who three times: 1979 in the New Haven Coliseum, 1982 at JFK in Phila, 1989 at the Vet in Phila. - none of the three venues are around today - but The Who still is.

I went to a "Welcome Summer" concert in JFK in the mid-'70's. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Peter Frampton, Dicky Betts and Great Southern and The J.Geils Band. Pretty cool stadium.

I remember camping in the JFK parking lot to get tickets to see Pink Floyd at the Vet in ~1989. I saw both Floyd and The Who that year at the Vet. Even in the cavernous Vet, The Who was unGodly LOUD!!!

Used to love the shows at the Vet. As soon as the lights went down, the security ringing the field was always bum-rushed by the lower bowl running on the field. It was futile to try to stop it. Then the 500, 600 & 700 level folks would come down to take the lower level. By the end of the show the upper deck was usually only half full.

I also was arrested for underage drinking before the summer 1992 Metallica show at the Spectrum. IIRC, it was about two months before my 21st birthday. I had to pay a fine, which was reduced by attending a seminar at UPenn. Worst part was having to dump a case of Mickeys.xsmhx

I was at the Army-Navy game in 1969 as a guest of the now defunct Philadelphia Evening Bulletin as one of the Delaware Valley 'scholar athletes' representing Owen J. Roberts H.S.:D We were given a luncheon at the "Blue Line Club' at the Spectrum before the game. I thought I'd made the big time..xrotatehx xrolleyesx
