Interesting year for Furman and one that Western Carolina fans remember fondly ( Every one needs one fond memory) . We lost to SC State first game. The second time the teams had played with the first being a win for the Bulldogs in the playoffs the previous year. FU won the conference outright. The title would have been shared but for the fact that WCU played one less conference game.:p All in all a good year. Only the second year in I-AA. I thought it would be our year and Western with a tenacious defense ended that dream in the semifinals. Unfortunately, they didn't fare too well against SIU in the champ game.

Bobby Lamb was the second string QB but I believe he played most of the Ga Tech game due to Charpia's injuryxnodx

50 years ago we played a much different schedule and the record sure showed itxnodx Kinda cool that USC made the trip to Greenville and played in Sirrine Stadium which I believe had a capacity of 13,000.

Furman apparently stopped Football in 1902 and didn't start back until 1913. Must have been a shortage of baptists during that part of South Carolina's historyxlolx

I'm not sure the exact system, but the scoring rules in football were different at the turn of the century.

The only thing to be added in football scoring wise, is the 2-point conversion. A 4 to 5 score could have been obtained by having one team score two safties (4) and another team score one safety and a field goal (5). Looks like it was quite a defensive grudge match.

Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (now Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, Florida, LSU, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tulane, and Vanderbilt.

Furman and The Citadel joined in the 30s after most of those teams had split off into the SEC and ACC. But imagine that conference today. I doubt W&L would be too fond of it.

Killing a little time and since we were reminiscing a little on another thread and since we have done this in the off season before, a look back at the past years schedules. Post yours too.



Interesting year for Furman and one that Western Carolina fans remember fondly ( Every one needs one fond memory) . We lost to SC State first game. The second time the teams had played with the first being a win for the Bulldogs in the playoffs the previous year. FU won the conference outright. The title would have been shared but for the fact that WCU played one less conference game.:p All in all a good year. Only the second year in I-AA. I thought it would be our year and Western with a tenacious defense ended that dream in the semifinals. Unfortunately, they didn't fare too well against SIU in the champ game.

Bobby Lamb was the second string QB but I believe he played most of the Ga Tech game due to Charpia's injuryxnodx




50 years ago we played a much different schedule and the record sure showed itxnodx Kinda cool that USC made the trip to Greenville and played in Sirrine Stadium which I believe had a capacity of 13,000.

Furman apparently stopped Football in 1902 and didn't start back until 1913. Must have been a shortage of baptists during that part of South Carolina's historyxlolx

Don't forget that 20 years ago, we won our National Championship and 50 years ago, FU moved to its new campus!

That year UMass tied Springfield College 5-5.

Was there a way to do that other than a field goal and a safety? Anyone know?
