Dwight Phillips won Olympic gold in 2004 and is considered by some to be one of the best American long jumpers ever.
Don’t tell that to the Louisiana trio set to challenge Phillips at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials in Eugene, Ore.
Former Southern University star Brian Johnson is ranked No. 1 nationally — and ahead of Phillips — going into preliminary rounds that begin Friday at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field. Finals are set for Sunday. The top three finishers claim a spot on the U.S. Olympic squad.
