Because it's June, and because June is slower than an Ivy League defensive back when it comes to college football news, the boss e-mailed me with a quirky story idea.

Actually, when Josh Johnson was being talked about as a draft prospect, a number of these "experts" indicated something like PFL DB's run 5+ 40's.... So, when I saw the Ivy League diss, I just had to chuckle....

How would you have any clue whatsoever? I mean seriously, have you ever even been to a PFL game? MANY DB's in the PFL run the 40 at a 4.5 level. A few might get down to 4.4. About the same as any FCS team. BANK ON IT!

It's almost too easy sometimes.

Let's be realistic here. I've seen Coastal play teams from the PFL and teams like Georgia Southern and Appalachian. The last two have kids all over the field with 4.4 speed, and Morehead St. and Davidson didn't have anybody with that type of speed. And that included the good 2004 Morehead team.

Yeah, check out Morehead State's soon to be consensus pre-season All American David Hyland and then get back to me. VERY FEW DB's at any level run 4.4's. GSU and App State DO NOT have a ton of DB's running 4.4. Most will run 4.5 or slightly slower. A FEW may hit 4.4 or slightly faster. PFL DB's in 2008 are just a quick as the DB's on any TYPICAL FCS team.

Flyer, you are absolutely right. You will not find one DB that plays D1 football who runs anything higher than a 4.8, in fact, the only players on the field who will run anything higher than a 5.0 are the D and O lineman, and occasionally the QB. I would go even further saying that D3 DB's run somewhere in the 4.6 to 4.8 range. Remember, being fast alone does not automatically make for a good DB; it is what a DB does with the speed that separates an FBS from FCS and D3 player.

Agree. Running a 4.7 or 4.8 40 isnt very difficult. When I weighed about 275 I still ran a 5.1 or so. In high school when I was 230-250 I cracked out a 4.9 every now and then. Anyone who plays DB at any level in college will run much better then a 5.0. Pat Forde should stick to writing about the Horseys

Completely blew our nerdy, unathletic, 5.2 40 DB's (right?) out of the stadium with that across the board 4.3 40 Chanticleer speed.
