View Full Version : Your teams most successful pro...

The thread about "The Face of your Program" made me wonder; what are each teams most successful athlete to turn pro.

I'm somewhat new to the board so if this has been done I apologize, but in reality could and should change from year to year as kids graduate or leave for the NFL. I guess we could include the CFL as well, but I won't start there.

At JSU (my opinion) it would be:

Erik Davis - 49'ers and a Super Bowl ring
Keith McKeller - Bills - three straight Super Bowl appearances

I'm going to go with Jerry Azumah, CB Chicago Bears 1998-2005. Jerry's backfield mate Dan Kreider, FB Pittsburgh Steelers 1999-today, has played longer but IMHO Jerry was a larger part of his team and he's been honored as All-Pro one season as a kick returner.

Honorable mention:

Dwayne Gordon, LB 1993-2000, Dolphins, Falcons, Chargers, Jets
Bruce Huther, LB 1977-83, Cowboys, Browns, Bear

Ughh...ummm...since we are baby FCS still...I would have to say Rashad Barksdale of the Chiefs. We have a couple of guys now (one a Senior Tackle...one a soph DTACKLE) that could really be something special.

IN other sports...has to be Bouna Condoul of the MLS. He is going to be the Senegalese starting World Cup goalie....and probably off the the Premier League (Newcastle) soon.

At UMass: Detroit Lions QB Greg Landry (1971 Pro Bowl); Cleveland Browns TE Milt Morin (three time Pro-Bowler in the 60s and 70s), and OL Bruce Kimball (with the Super Bowl champion Washington Redskins in 1983).

In other sports: A couple of basketball players named Erving and Camby, and Cy Young winner Mike Flanagan. Oh, and goalkeeper Brianna Scurry of the US women's national soccer team.

Hornets In The Pros

National Football League

Lonie Paxton • LS
New England Patriots

Regarded as one of the top long snappers in the NFL, Paxton has been a member of the New England Patriots since 2000. During that time, he has helped the Patriots to Super Bowl titles in 2002, 2004 and 2005. Paxton gained national exposure as the long snapper for Adam Vinatieri's game-winning field goals against Oakland and St. Louis in 2002.

Canadian Football League

Ricky Ray • QB
Edmonton Eskimos

A two-year starter at quarterback, Ricky Ray helped lead the Hornets to their best seasons in the Div. I-AA era. With Ray under center, Sacramento State recorded 13 victories and set numerous offensive records. His 61.9 career completion percentage is the best in school history and he also holds the single-season record for completion percentage (62.2) and touchdowns passes (20). Ray also rushed for 10 scores in 2000 to set the school record for most TD runs by a QB. Following his time with the Hornets, he played with the San Francisco 49ers. Ray then moved to the Fresno Frenzy of AFL2 before signing with the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL. After leading the Esks to a 2003 Grey Cup appearance, Ray spend 2004 with the New York Jets. He returned to Edmonton in 2005 and won the Grey Cup.

Charles Roberts • RB
Winnipeg Blue Bombers

The most decorated player in school history, Charles Roberts set rushing records that will likely never fall. Roberts burst onto the scene in 1998 when he tallied 2,260 rushing yards to set the NCAA Div. I-AA single-season record. He finished his career with 6,553 yards which was the most by any player in Div. I or I-AA history at the time. Roberts also set the NCAA Div. I-AA single-game mark when he had 409 rushing yards against Idaho State in 1999. Roberts joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2001 and has been an East Division All-Star each season. During that time, he has led the CFL in rushing three times, including the 2006 season.

You are both right and wrong. Mel received two Super Bowls rings with the Redskins as a player (XVII & XXII). He was a scout for the Redskins in 1991 in which he received his third ring (XXVI). Mel played in a third Super Bowl (XVIII) in which the Redskins lost. Mel also has a DII National Championship ring from Cal Poly's Championship in 1980.

At Eastern, currently in the NFL are Jesse Chatman (RB) with Miami, and Michael Roos (LT) with Tennessee. Roos just got a 6 year, $43 million contract.

I'd say the most successful (at least this early in his career) would be Rodney Stuckey who was drafted 15th by the Pistons last spring. He definitely stepped up his game during the playoffs filling in when Billups got hurt. He's going to be a superstar in the next couple years.

Well Rabidrabbit stated earlier the Jim Langer is probably the most sucessfull pro that attended South Dakota State, which is saying a lot since Adam Vinatieri also attended SDSU. Here are Jim Langer's accomplishments with the Miami Dolphins during the 1970's.

6x Pro-Bowl Selection (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978)
6x All Pro (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978)
2x Super Bowl Champion (1972, 1973)
NFL All Decade Team 1970's (He beat out Mike Webster who had pretty decent career with the Steeler's)
Only player in NFL history to snap the ball on every offensive snap for an undefeated team.
Started in 141 consecutive games in NFL
Top Offensive Line in D-2 is awarded "Jim Langer" Award. (Which is kind of funny if you think about it, Jim Langer never played offensive line at the D-2 level, he was a linebacker in college)
Inducted into NFL Hall of Fame 1987.

The other interesting fact about Jim Langer is that he never made all-conference in football while playing at SDSU. He did lead the conference in batting average and ERA. Jim was never drafted by an NFL team and was cut by the Cleveland Browns before getting a chance to play for the Dolphins as a center. Where he flurrished to say the least.

Adam Vinatierei is probably the next distinguished pro from SDSU. Here are some of his accomplishments.

2x Pro-Bowl Selection (2002, 2004)
2x All Pro (2002, 2004)
4x Super Bowl Champion (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLI)
Kicked game winning Field Goals in two Super Bowls with less than one minute remaining in game.
Is 20 out of 21 in kicking game winning field goals with less than one minute remaining in the game.

Adam Timmerman is also a multiple winner of Super Bowls and Pro-Bowls but probably won't make the Hall of Fame.

I'm still waiting for Northwestern State fans to chime in because they've had some pretty good ones like Joe Delaney and Mark Duper, who ran two legs on Northwestern's 1981 NCAA 4x100 champion relay team.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ufMGFtBa9U&feature=related

They've had a flood of good players like Floyd Turner and Odessa Turner, Bobby Hebert, Kenny Wright, Gary Reasons, Randy Hilliard, Terrence McGee, Marcus Spears, John Stephens and and Hall of Famer Jackie Smith.

For an FCS, there's been a lot of talent come out of that little school.

C'mon Demon fans, why did you need me to speak up for you? xeyebrowx

Sorry, I got here as fast as I could. There were a number of players in the sixties and some in the seventies, but you hit most of the ones folks on here might know. We also had the Thundering Bull Sidney Thornton who played in the Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl teams at FB. Just a little trivia: Can you name the only school to have 2 AFC Rookies of the Year in the same decade? Yep, you guessed it. Little NSU. Joe Delaney & John Stephens.

Lee White maybe?

Drafted 17th overall in the 60s. Didn't have a good career, though. Alfred Pupunu, maybe. Has a Super Bowl TD reception. The McQuistans stand to have good careers.

Don't forget about Rich Erenberg Colgate Guys. A good friend of mine played for the Steelers the same time and although Rich was maybe not the best he had some fine seasons.

Agreed. Marv Hubbard was also very good from 1968-77 (esp. 1970-74)with the Raiders and Lions. Al Jamieson was also a fine player in the AFL, though not for a long duration.

Remember him - saw him play for the NY Jets in 1970, filling in for Emerson Boozer.

Princeton has had few distinguished pro players, probably because it ran the Single Wing until 1969. Some more recent ones that come to mind were Hank Bjorklund (Jets RB), Karl Chandler (Giants C), Bob Holly (Redskins and Falcons QB) Keith Elias (Colts and Giants RB), Jason Garrett (Cowboys and Giants QB).

For a while, between Duper and the Turners it seemed like the Demons would always have an NFL guy at WR. I had forgotten about Thornton, another name people will remember

If you check out that YouTube video, you'll see on the second leg, Delaney absolutely destroys the big "white guy" Jeffrey Phillips who himself is catching some pretty fast guys in front of him. On the last leg, Duper holds off Willie Gault from Tennessee, Duane Evans of Arizona State and the guy in red and white who comes up hard on the outside lane is a guy you may have heard of....Carl Lewis. Of course, in that video, he's got quite the wild 'fro going on, but there's no mistaking his running style. He was Frosh at U of H that year and had beaten Phillips 9.99 to 10.00 in the 100 meters the night before.

Closer to home, you also forgot about Rusty Guilbeau at end for the Jets
Keith Ortego, Superbowl Ring with da Bears
Bryan Hicks, Safety with the Bengals, I think
Richard Ellender, WR and KR for the Oilers
Kavika Pittman, who has a Superbowl ring...
Tom Sestak, DE for Buffalo in the 60's
Flip Johnson, WR who I think may have been on a couple of those Buffalo teams that went to the Superbowl....

Of those, Guilbeau's probably the most notable, but they were all solid pros. In the 1986 Super Bowl, you had Ortego's Bears playing Starring's Patriots. Hicks played in the Super Bowl against Jerry Rice and the Niners. Kavika had a couple of years where he was a first-rate sack guy before injuries started to rob him of his mobility.

A couple of others we missed are Terry Irving, who had some solid years in Arizona as an LB and B.J. Sams who, before his injury last year, had become on the league's premier return men.
