An incident related to WCU's quest for Southern Conference membership occurred during the 1974 season. Prior to that year's game, Appalachian State officials informed Dr. H. F. Robinson (WCU's Chancellor) and Bob Waters (the athletics director and head football coach for Western) that if Jerry Gaines, the Catamounts' all-star wide receiver/kick returner (and arguably the school's best athlete ever) were allowed to play in the WCU-ASU football game in Boone, ASU would withdraw their support of Western's membership for the Southern Conference. Their premise was that Gaines was playing in 1974 season as a fifth-year medical red-shirt and red-shirting was not permitted in the Southern Conference. Gaines was injured in the first half of the second game of the 1971 season, incidentally against Appalachian State. Catamount fans believe Appalachian State's motive was based upon Gaines' performance in the previous two meetings in the series, both won handily by Western. Gaines did not play in 1974, but his replacement, true-freshman Wayne Tolleson, caught what proved to be the winning touchdown pass in a 21-17 Catamount victory.

In 2004, one of the most memorable "Battles for the Old Mountain Jug" took place in front of 14,714 - the second-largest crowd ever in Cullowhee. Reserve quarterback Justin Clark completed all five of his pass attempts, two for touchdowns, to lead an 11-point comeback that will go down in the record books as one of the greatest in this rivalry's history. A combined total of 45 points were scored in the game's final 23 minutes with Western ending a five-game skid to ASU.

Taking the 2007 game out of the equation since that has already been mentioned, the 1999 App win in Boone and the 2000 GSU win in Statesboro are two of best and most exciting games I can remember and were electric atmospheres too.

Western Carolina was 2-7 in 1975 and Appalachian State had just upset Jim Carlen's South Carolina Gamecocks in Columbia, SC the week before. In a driving rainstorm(I believe) Western Carolina pulled one of the greatest upsets in the rivalry shocking the Mountaineers 20-11.

If I remember correctly, we then fumbled the ensuing kickoff which you ended up converting into a TD within the next minute or two so we basically started the game down 14-0. Absolutely nothing went right for us in that game and the year ended up as a bust with a 7-4 record and no playoffs...

NW State were and are too afraid to come to ASU. When they backed out of their contract in 2005 (for obvious reasons...) we filled that spot with LSU.

You're probably thinking of CJ Hudson. He eclipsed 1,000 yards every year except his junior year when he was suspended for the first game and ultimately served as an often used back up to Terry Ennis who was a great back in his own right.

CJ was 5'7" on a good day I think, but he was huge. About as powerful a back as you'll ever find in someone that tall.

They were right, the ASU loss to NSU (31-20) in 1998, WAS the playoff game....the loss to us in 2004 (40-35) was during the regular season. I guess that you will just have to chalk up my error to old age. xsmiley_wix

I thought that it was because NSU had the chance to pick up a nice check AND a nice win from a FBS school (Louisiana - Monroe) both of which they did. I didn't know that it was because they were afraid to play the Mountaineers again! xwhistlex

I'll have to disagree GSU beat ASU in the first two minutes when they couldn't tackle Foster and then a GSU DB took a bad throw from a less 100% AE on his first pass of the game. GSU took opportunities and then capitalized on them, like it or not GSU beat ASU that day. Just like ASU beat JMU in the playoffs.

If we'd have played 65 minutes that day maybe ASU would have won, or if Elder had started (AE was brought back a game too early). But the decisions were made and GSU made the best of them, they played their most complete game of the year that day included their backup passing QB who hit all of his targets that day.

Perhaps App's defense just manned up and played that day. It's not like JMU was settling for field goals all day (or missing them). Appalachian beat JMU. The offense put itself in a position to have a chance to win and needed the defense to step up. You can argue JMU should have kicked the field goal instead of running the ball, but the defense--inpaticular Roman--made a play. He made a play and that play won us the game. Besides, by your argument we shouldn't have won any games, we scored fairly quickly last year.

Very rarely, I think, do teams beat themselves. Unless they just give up (like the Lakers did in game six). I don't think JMU gave up, I think App made plays when necessary.

ASU's offense doesn't rely on TOP to put up the points. It strikes when possible from any point on the field. TOP only means something when the two teams are running similar offenses or when the team with the short end of the TOP is not scoring..

That game wasn't in '84 but I remember it just the same because we lost in OT. It was '94. I remember sitting in the stands for several minutes after the game was over in disbelief.

That game wasn't in '84 but I remember it just the same because we lost in OT. It was '94. I remember sitting in the stands for several minutes after the game was over in disbelief.

P.S. I had to check the media guide just to be sure. But it sucked for ASU either way.


Thanks for the info. I guess I could have looked it up too. '94 sounds better. In hindsight, I was in grad school in '84, so I doubt I was at many football games that year. They all seem to just blur together at this point anyway. But, I was there at that VMI game, and boy that was an awful feeling.

If the Thunder Herd of Marshall was still a part of the FCS nation then they may point to the 50-0 beat down they put on us in Huntington, way back in 1990. That was a humbling experience. OUCH!
